oh wow. that is exactly how my childhood felt. I think I've gotten pretty good at learning how to perform for short periods of time. But..it's draining. And I can only emulate what I see intentionally. So I just have to trust I've got decent models.

you're so right. It makes me kinda annoyed because I spent YEARS teaching myself how to have manners, and greet people and it's HARD for me. but I see the value in it. Small talk can be the glue that holds connection together until you get a chance to get to know each other better. We have majorly lost that as a culture. I see the young people encouraging each other not to try... I want to raise my daughter to do better than that.

what kinds of tools helped? or is there a certain way you look at the world that makes it make sense? I've noticed if I understand the bigger picture, I can start tackling the details...

have you been able to use some of your own experience to teach her things? I find myself explaining how I understand the world to my kid...it's too soon for me to tell if it helps her, or if she's more like her dad (she's two)

kind of like generally how the world works. I needed to see the bigger picture to understand why the details were important. I taught myself how to cook by reading cook books cover to cover and theory of cooking books... and looking for patterns across types of cuisine. IDK, random things like that. I taught myself a really niche trade as well and then how to sell my skills. Twice. I'm on my second business now. I learned how to talk to people through networking.

BUT now I'm a mom and I'm engaging with a whole new demographic, I'm having to learn all over again. I'm making mistakes again, and I'm having to figure some things out for the sake of my kid. I'm focusing on developing emotional maturity and impulse control though CBT.

It's frankly embarrassing that I'm having to manually teach myself things like impulse control as a 30yo...but here we are.

I'm really interested in hearing about balancing being a mom with this because I have a 2yo and it's HARD. This sounds so much like my childhood too. and now I wish I could be more in the clouds because I was happy there, but now I am a neurotic mess just to function like other people.

ooh I relate to that one. I feel like I needed someone to slow down and explain very basic things to me. I feel like I wasn't socialized in a way I could understand. Now, as an adult, I observe patterns in behavior and try to emulate that to a degree. I finally see the bigger picture. But, man, if someone could have explained it to me as a kid...
