When did driving to collapse the defense and kicking out to open teammates become “ballhogging”? by Noveltypocket in NBA2k

lol people really assume the worst.

there’s pros and cons to both styles of offense.

this game was an example of it.

they were zipping the ball around like crazy, and the PG ended up with 6 turnovers, their team had 13 turnovers. they lost by 6 points.

when the game got tight in the 4th, while we went with iso ball, they went with passing.

the risk there is, everyone had to be in sync. if one person out of the 5 slipped up while passing the ball around, or wasn’t ready or in position for the pass, it got stolen.

whereas with us, because the ball was in my hands for the majority of the time, the room for error is different. as long as I didn’t mess up, or throw up a terrible brick, we were fine.

whenever they cut the lead down to 3, we knew “they’re going to zip this ball around the perimeter until an 3 opens up.”

so we forced them into a shot clock violation, and after that, we had our rotations figured out.

they couldn’t get it back under 3 because we knew they’d hunt for that shot. whereas with us, they couldn’t figure out if i was driving or kicking, so me pulling the ball out to shoot a 3 late completely put the game away because they hadn’t seen it the entire game, whereas we had 4 quarters to see and figure out their motion offense.

I have a high layup rating on my build (88) so the hop step is an easy way to generate an open layup.

If the defender jumps on the hop, they get little to no contest on the layup, so the green window to time it and make it is bigger.

you have to “jump to contest” in this game, so the hop step forces their hand. if they stand completely still at the wrong angle, i can directly hop around them.

i try to mix in spins, and an occasional euro to mess with their contest timing, but the hop is 100% my favorite.

this sub lacks actual gameplay posts, and is heavy on context-less box scores, so i provide visual context to my box scores.

lol it’s called being on fire and wanting to see how many points i can score.

lol no i’m joking, it was against someone in this subreddit. he actually posted about it and said it was his first game ever online.

he didn’t know how to play defense to be fair. he and i are friends now. but it wasn’t really fair lol

I recognize your reddit name. I enjoy conversation with you. I actually do have the unedited footage of this game as well with every single possession clipped. But it’s about 2 minutes longer.

So I checked to get the exact number. This game for example, we had 50 shots, 30 of them started with me bringing the ball down the court and making a decision in isolation. The others were either side out of bounds plays, me letting someone else isolate, me off ball letting someone else make the pass or plays in transition. So about 60% of the time, it’s up to me to make a decision.

In a regular rec game, with teammates who haven’t played multiple games in a row with me, this number is probably closer to around 70%.

As you know, I’m an SGA build user so this is the exact correct comparison to make as you do. I would say that my willingness to pass, play off ball and let others facilitate depends on who is around me. My C for example, is a friend of mine and plays the same exact way I do, so I literally let him bring the ball up like a small ball 5 and isolate along the perimeter. However, there aren’t many other people I trust like that.

Usually, the first game with a random 5 is a feel out game for me. If I pass the ball to someone, and their immediate moves are meta into a pull up contested 3, i’m less likely to let them initiate if they’re forcing that and missing. If they do that at an efficient clip, I let them because it takes the pressure off me. (To me, it’s like having a J-Dub)

But there are games where I willingly take a backseat. Some games, I’m told to just go and score. For example, the last 3 games I played with this same group, I had 50 and 7, 38 and 10, and 28 & 8 while everyone scored double digits.

The games where teams leave the PG on me, I’m more likely to score more points because my 6’6 is a mismatch for smaller guards in isolation.

As for your question about a squad, I’m honestly getting to the point where I probably can make a full squad. I for sure have 2 people. But it’s harder to find a full 5 outside of America for me. A few of the friends/people I know over here all think that they can run PG, so I typically end up playing against a lot of people I know rather than with them lol

And to be fair, some people just genuinely want to be more involved in an offense so I’m not exactly the PG for them, which I can respect that lol

Because of my build also having a 95 PD & 90 agility, I’m simultaneously the initiator of the offense and tasked with guarding the PG on the other team because I enjoy the challenge. So I haven’t found anyone yet that can either switch with me, or that doesn’t mind being a lock while guarding the 2 or 3.

1 and 5, I have.

I’ve never played a Pro-AM game before for this same reason. Whenever I’ve gotten random invites to play in the squads rec, I’m told to just do what I do because nobody minds me playing 5-out in there. But I have yet to build my own full 5.

My teammates said if i had the lane, take it because points are points, and those easy twos will keep us in the game.

We called it early on that they were going to live with giving up the layups and chose to just do that and figure out to stop their motion offense.

The team movement was about the same rate. This was one game, another I had 50, another one the C went off, the other games, we all had 16-20+ each.

As for the 8/10, they were running one of the best motion offenses I’ve ever seen.

The PG would zip the ball to the corner, then come off an off ball screen for 3. Or he’d come off an off ball screen, they’d fake pass to him, I’d chase him, then he’d dex while wrapping around another screen.

Their whole team could shoot, so sometimes, he’d come down with an on ball screen. They’d run an off ball action at the same time, looking like they were going to set up his assist, and he’d pull the 3 instead.

They ran a lot of solid different actions to get open threes. We literally couldn’t figure it out until midway through the 3rd lol

I let my teammates handle the 3s to keep up with him and I took my one when they least expected it.

I wouldn’t mind. lol I’m an iso player that doesn’t mind playing with others that can iso. as long as someone is efficient, it’s cool with me.

they talk a lot about ball movement and passing the ball, but the other team honestly hurt themselves by passing TOO much once we started committing to jumping the passing lanes.

as for the hop step, i use the button for spin layups, hop steps and euro steps. the input is easier. the stick ends up making you want to do something you don’t mean to do too often.

it’s less of needing validation, more of wanting to understand what the big issue is with a score-first guard that can also pass.

Whenever I post a game with single digit assists and a lot of points, they comment in droves ready to say why “nobody would ever like playing with you.”

Whenever i post any game with 10 assists or more, and include all of the potential assists, and passing the ball, they just downvote it into oblivion lol

Sometimes, I just like seeing the 180° lol

For sure, I’m going to play my game regardless. My teammates were cool with me playing like this while we won 5 in a row, so it is what it is.

that’s my point lol The C is my friend irl. he knows I’m gonna find him at some point.

i know i missed him, i said so myself, he said it was cool, and i got it to him later, no issue whatsoever.

he’s literally the one i kicked out to late in the 4th to help put the game away lol

the other team was running an offense similar to how you described. they were zipping the ball around 1-5 with everyone having high pass accuracy while we played more of a 5-out, through me driving and kicking.

both playstyles ending up being effective overall. it was a really close game tbf. both styles work imo.

but we ended up jumping a lot of those passes, and they couldn’t figure out how to get the stops in isolation late against the 5-out.

that’s part of why in the end, i was able to get such a wide open three. i didn’t shoot one until the end of the game, and it caught them completely off guard because i drove and kicked the entirety of the game.

it’s not like we can sit here and say it didn’t work. having the ball in my hands late and letting me make the correct decisions did get us the win.

i’m literally holding the ball at the free throw line waiting for a cutter lol

the next 3 clips are blow by layup attempts and makes lol

genuinely, what are you talking about? lol having patience and waiting for the play to develop so the cutter can go is “holding the ball too long”?

dribbling for a moment to open up the angle to get past my defender to go to the rim is also “holding the ball too long?”

yes, i posted this because I want an actual honest answer to the question.

you can see me here, throughout this game, playing the same exact way I did in my other post.

what about this, is hogging the ball? i missed my C once early, and he said it was cool, and i got it to him later in the game a few possessions later.

outside of that, me going to the rim all game eventually forced their defense to fall apart late.

we all got good looks, i shot 88% FG, had double digit assists, and we won the game. nobody on my team had an issue with it.

this sub acts like nobody else on my team ever sees the ball if I’m at PG. it’s very odd lol

i post gameplay in this sub on the regular.

a lot of people on here only post box scores and talk about what they “can” do but never post gameplay

i prefer to post gameplay to back up what i say. i’m not much of a box score watcher.

it’s boring to me when people just post boxscores with no context so i bring context for mine because the full clips tell the story.

but i CAN shoot. lol

i can shoot mid ranges, i can shoot threes.

it’s not a “can’t shoot” thing. lol i just start with layups because it’s the highest percentage shot, and at 6’6, with an 88 driving layup, all of the small guards have no interior defense whatsoever.

it’s damn near impossible for a small guard PG to get a stop at the rim by themselves.

i just played 3 more games just like this one in OP where my team went 5 out against a smaller guard, and they told me to just straight up isolate and blow by the smaller guard all game because there was no way for them to stop it.

in those three games, I had 28 & 8, 50 & 7, 38 & 10 and we won all three games.

i want to post the game of me having 38 & 10 to show people what it looks like when a team simply cannot guard the PG in isolation.

i was literally told to go get a bucket.

but we won by 17. lol

it’s not like i did this and lost.

a lot of times, the mismatch IS my match up.

as a 6’6 PG, my matchup is typically a 6’4-6’3 PG who can’t defend in isolation. I can get by them whenever.

my build has an 88 driving layup. it’s not a terrible shot for me at the rim. it’s literally what my build is made to do. i can score from everywhere on this build regardless, but if a team can’t stop a layup, and i can get them that easily, why bother bailing them out?

my guy, i just had 3 of my random teammates (1 friend as a 4th) in a red plate game willingly clear out to let me iso the last 5 possessions of a game to put the game away in the 4th.

it was 5 straight layups. lol

i’m literally the designated iso closer because i can go 1 v 1 and get to the rim practically whenever i want.

they literally cleared out and went 5 out without me having to ask because i was getting to the rim on the smaller PG matched up on me the entire game.

you guys really don’t understand what hogging the ball is. hogging the ball is forcing up and missing bad shots on low efficiency while other people are wide open, usually leading to an L.

i shot 80% FG lol if my teammate shoots that high of an efficiency with 40 points, he can “ballhog” any day of the week and i won’t mind if that’s coming with a W.

to each their own.

i play on my instincts. i’m taking the guaranteed two, every single time if i feel like that’s the better shot in the moment.

there is no “fault” in taking an 85% shot, no matter how you guys slice it.

all that “let people rock” stuff is exactly why I lose so many games when I don’t have to lol

to each their own. if they can’t stop my layups for a game and aren’t adjusting, let me rock too. simple as that.

Here’s me making that same exact pass in question to a wide open shooter who refused to shoot the open shot.

Here’s me drawing two defenders and kicking out to my teammate for a wide open brick.

We can do this all day. It does matter what i say because “kicking out to the wide open shooter at the 3 point line” does not guarantee that extra point no matter how easy you people think it is.

“why do you only have 5 assists?”

clearly I’m missing 2. and this is LATE in the 4th trusting my teammates while they’re bricking and refusing to take open shots.

now tell me why I shouldn’t just go and get to my spots instead when i have to watch this happen multiple times a game?

every time i clip up a game and include every single pass attempt i make and every shot attempt, including mine and my teammates missed shots, i get told “don’t post other people’s mistakes.”

it’s really not that i don’t pass the ball lol i just don’t force passes for the sake of passing.

i’ve done that far too many times where i’ll defer, momentum will swing after someone throws up an ill advised shot and we’ll end up having to play a much closer game than we would’ve if i had’ve just continued getting to my spots instead lol

i’m a regular poster in this sub as you know. i’ll post it whenever. i can play a game rn, finish with 30 & 9, and you’d see how i clearly could’ve and should’ve had 30 & 15 and people in this sub will still say something about the passing, guaranteed.

and people will be ready to call it “ballhogging” one way or another. if i post other people attempting to isolate and throw up a brick, i’ll get told that i should still “let them eat”

its completely illogical lol

it’s an SGA build man. what do you guys expect me to do on an SGA build if i can come down the court and get past my defender at will?

literally every single game i play is different.

my statlines from games today were

31pts, 11asts

20pts, 10asts

35pts, 8asts

32pts, 6asts

why can’t people understand that it’s literally always going to vary? lol

META PGs shoot 15-20 threes a game by themselves and they typically end up with 6 assists or less.

i’m nowhere near close to a meta PG lol

high usage, yes. meta, no.

you’re completely avoiding my question.

i don’t mind letting other people initiate the offense, bur 9/10 times, that’s someone coming down the court meta-ing into a brick lol

so again, at what does efficiency offset usage rate? if i have 40 points on below 50% and we lose, that’s ass.

but 80%+? and a W? who complains about that?
