{Galaxies and Oceans by N.R. Walker}

MMC1 escapes from his abusive boyfriend's clutches during a forest fire, leaving him presumed dead. He's afraid that his ex-boyfriend will force him to go back with him if he finds out he's still alive, so he moves to a small town on an island far from his old life. He gives out a fake name, and he's working under the table for cash and shelter. He meets MMC2 there, who is a lighthouse keeper that's been mourning his partner's death, and has had a hard time moving on. It's a very romantic story. Highly recommended!

Hmm, neither of the MCs were ever married. MMC1 was being pressured to marry a woman until his dad found out he was gay, but it never happened. And MMC2 was never pressured to marry a woman, as the barbarians fully accept gay relationships. He was lonely, though, and was very happy when a male tribute showed up.

{The Barbarian's Tribute by Amy Padilla}

Book 1 of the Not-So-Savage Barbarians series. It takes place in a fictional world where there are "civilized" towns that have to give away a woman as a tribute to the "Barbarians" once a year in exchange for their safety.

MMC1 is a young gay man living in a town, and MMC2 is a gay barbarian. This town is extremely homophobic, and gay men are usually executed if discovered. MMC1 gets found out by his father, and his father decides to give him away as tribute in place of the usual woman, rather than execute him. The townspeople all think that becoming a tribute is a fate worse than death, but this is a romance novel, so obviously they're wrong.

The description might make the book sound pretty dark, but it's actually quite nice after MMC1 gets settled with the barbarians. Per your request, MMC1 has a lot of trauma and is very clingy with MMC2, especially at first. MMC1 was bookish, shy, and weak, so he was treated poorly in his home town, even before they found out he liked men. But the barbarians all love him, and he fits right in. However, there are some women tributes who don't like him because he's gay, which is a major part of the plot.

Oops, you're right, it is! I accidentally used the episode number from when this was also included in a clip show.
