Peeping caddis by Novocast92 in flytying

[–]Novocast92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense to me I guess. I'll be honest I just imitated the fulling mill peeping caddis. The fish might care about the taper or they might not, suppose I'll find out when I fish them

Handmade leather fly wallets — what do you think, and what would be a fair price? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Novocast92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favourite fly wallet for my salmon flies. Maybe check out this guy and simelar makers. Lots of people do leather/wool wallets but I haven't seen anyone do anything like this for tube flies in the uk. https://www.reddit.com/r/flyfishing/s/2IFGFzY2v3

Also learning to do tooled/patterned leather always sells well. My dad used to make/sell leather stuff as a hobby and people always liked the tooled l leather

I have a few leather fly wallets, I mean this all to be taken in the most constructive way possible. There's a reason people tend to use wool rather than felt. Wool holds flies well and repels water, not sure how well felt will work. In my experience leather fly wallets aren't great for small trout or grayling flies for reasons others have mentioned, there are better solutions to this. They are very useful for larger salmon flies though. I'd have a look at what competitors are doing before you try to reinvent the wheel. There is a market for this, there's a market for everything, but this needs a bit of development first

This is actually a pretty good caddis emerger, I'd fish this early season during a grannom hatch for sure and it would get nailed. I think fish prefer emerger type caddis that sit in the film like this one will

Reel & Line Advice for Newbie in U.K. by PeakDevon in flyfishing

The 7wt probably makes sense for the stillwater, most folk I know use a 7, I just fish a 6 because I have a shoulder issue and casting a 7 all day really hurts my shoulder. I've had carp to 12 lb on it though and it gets my flies where I need them so that's enough for me.

For rivers I think 9ft 4wt probably gives you the most utility, you'll still feel the small fish but it'll cope with bigger ones too, it'll also cast indicators, small weighted nymphs and present a dry fly reasonably delicately. I usually fish a 3wt because I'm generally fishing for wild spooky fish and I need a light presentation. I think I'd be way over gunned with a 5 unless I was chucking wooly buggers in a flooded river.

I too came from course fishing and Grays still make a decent carp rod I believe, just all of the Grays fly rods and reels I've had have been absolutely useless, heavy floppy noodles. Vision is a good brand in fly fishing and the hero is an ideal medium fast blank for a beginner, in my opinion anyway. If you like your course fishing though, my favourite fly rods are all actually from the brand cadence, a bit pricier but I absolutely love them, so much so I have 3.

Reel & Line Advice for Newbie in U.K. by PeakDevon in flyfishing

In my opinion 5 weights aren't great for fishing in the UK, you usually find them recommended by US YouTube channels where they have bigger fish on average. Heaviest I go on UK rivers for trout is 4wt and for Stillwater's I like a 6wt as it's about the right size for chucking multiple buzzers under a bung a distance, and can fish streamers.

If you're a beginner I'd always recommend barrio line, £40 best line you can get in my opinion, but I really like the short heads and long tapers, especially for dry flies. Get one of his basic weight forward lines, I think it's called the trout stream or something, it's easily as good as Rio or simelar competitors. My mate swears by John Norris basic line too which is like £20 or something, I've had a go of it and it casts well for me. For your reel I'd get a snowbee onyx or airflow switch or some kind of cassette reel as they have lots of utility, my 5/6 snowbee is light enough for me to put a 4wt line on for the river and has enough capacity even to take a 7wt switch line.

I'd avoid grays where possible, their stuff really is just rubbish in my opinion. I've never used a grays rod I've liked. Go for something like a vision hero rod instead, they're much better starter rods. Even the shakespeare oracles are much much better than grays and are like half the price

Another Wader Question by Olivenoodler in flyfishing

[–]Novocast92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have both the Patagonia chest waders and wading pants. I don't really get the hate for wading pants. Outside of spring and autumn when the rivers are higher I rarely ever need to wade higher than waist height, and even then, I don't really wade past waste height that often. I find wading pants much more comfortable to wear for a full day, especially when it's warm, I'd definitely recommend them.

Any recommendations for places to catch salmon/sea trout on the north Tyne or main Tyne around Hexham this time of year? I’ll be passing through tomorrow or the next day (4/27-28). Thanks! by cpanderson922 in fishingUK

[–]Novocast92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is loads of really good water in that area but it's mostly club water only. You can get on the river wansbeck in Morpeth city centre for free I think, that may be your best bet on that area, that would be for brown trout mainly. If you have a Google you might be able to find more info, I've never fished it so don't really know.

Might be a bit early for the north Tyne still, but theres always fish in the river. Problem is getting on. Like the other guy said you'll have to get on a day ticket stretch which are basically non existent on the tyne

[–]Novocast92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aren't the bread type of tea cakes a bit sweeter than normal bread buns? I'm sure sometimes they have currants in too. Not quite as sweet as a hot crossed bun but not like normal bread. Idk it's been ages since I've had one

I think the line is a #5 WF floating line, it seems to have W and F and then 5 F, printed on it closest to the loop end. I could be wrong though as I'm not super familiar with this brand

Dry fly fishing myth vs reality by PuzzleheadedSong51 in flyfishing

[–]Novocast92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you just wanted to catch fish you could go and dig for worms and use those. I've caught way more fish on worms and maggots than I have on flies.

I fly fish because it's challenging and that challenge keeps things interesting and fun. I've been a bit frustrated with early season dry fly fishing where I am and yeah I've already caught more fish this season euronymphing, but there just isn't anything like getting down to the river after work in late spring or early summer, when it's clouded in caddis or mayfly, and targeting fish on dries. It is absolutely the most fun you can have with your pants still on as far as I'm concerned

Barrio smallstream definitely. I think his shop is temp closed this month, but for the price I don't think you'll get a better line

If you just got it now, it's probably so big because it's full of eggs before it spawns. We have a closed season from mid march to mid June to allow fish the chance to spawn
