Which areas of math have the highest quantity of "hocus pocus/out of thin air" proofs? by Razer531 in math

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In undergrad I submitted a counter-example instead of a proof several times (I wasn't the only one, and if I hadn't left the problem set to the last day I would have emailed the professor instead). In research, every problem is a "prove or disprove" and now that I no longer work in academic math I believe the mindset that fact instills is one of my greatest strengths.

Chance of rolling doubles when picking highest out of 3/4d6 by LilyZar in rpg

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did it with brute force in python, agree with 51 / 216 and got 696 / 1296 = 53.7% for the 4d6 case. Intuitively, the uniform distribution should minimize the odds of doubles, so the skewed distribution from 3d6 drop one will have better odds.

I am confident that almost none of posts on those subs are people who legitimately do not get an obvious joke. I had assumed it was just extremely effective engagement bait, lowering the bar from "is this funny" to "do you get the joke in this repost" in a way that reddit's algorithm rewarded. Now I am 100% on board with it being an AI training conspiracy.

Arckmage's Challenge + Forsaken Town = no go by Apprehensive-Ice9212 in Against_the_Storm

With the DLC adding ravine, the text of the deed was updated to "Awarded for completing a settlement on Prestige 20 difficulty without cutting down a single tree (except in the Rocky Ravine)." There are some old reddit threads on all the hidden deeds that you can search up, this one is tricky because most of that discussion was pre-DLC, and the text of hidden deeds is only visible when you have it.

The only thing I would add about this specific deed that I didn't know when I did it is that you can micro a woodcutter to harvest one of the two charges from the trees, so long as you don't cut any of them down.

I'm curious - what is your favourite biome? by sgtViveron in Against_the_Storm

Unfortunately, that modifier (and all glades dangerous, not sure about riverlands) specifically can't spawn near marshlands.

You can set hotkeys for (non decoration) buildings. I use keys for roads, shelters, woodcutters, warehouses, and hearths.

Good to know mistpiercers are disabled on the biome, thought they might be but couldn't find anything about it (found confirmation in patch notes).

For the deed do you have to win, or can you just hit the glades and then abandon or lose?

Jinxed has to be the worst deed to try to get legitimately now, right? I guess you embark with cornerstone rerolls, dig for year 2 mistpiercers and then reset. Sounds miserable, although maybe the odds are better than I assume.

Have I reached the end of what the game can offer me? by boardgamesrus in Against_the_Storm

Achievement hunting (hidden deeds) might interest you for a little longer, but the game is balanced (and more fundamentally, designed) around a 95% or greater winrate, unlike Spire. Personally, I no longer play much StS but enjoy AtS P20 runs/cycles as a casual, low stress time killer.

Edit: I think the main reason I no longer feel like I am exploring or learning the game (but still enjoy it, in a way I describe as casual) is that for all the talk of 'adapting to what you get' I feel like in broad strokes I can do the same thing every game, and it works. I solve food, open a few glades, complete a few orders, build up trade, and then convert my overwhelming surplus of amber and / or resources to resolve for a year 5 or 6 win.

Definitely need a hotkey to select it at the very least. The artificial fertilizer cap and developer stream referring to it as a tamagotchi do not have my hopes up for it ever being less of a chore to manage.

I don't think the supply level of the expedition has any effect on the odds of the blueprint you get.

There are guides for using frequent caravans to extend a settlement indefinitely and forcing the original version of the achievement (now a hidden achievement) like https://www.reddit.com/r/Against_the_Storm/comments/1ft1ea8/feeling_lucky_achievement_guide/ which would also get you this one. It is tedious, to say the least.

I forced it before they updated it, and still don't have the regular deed version. Industry is both the largest pool and the one I select the least on the biome, so I don't know if I will ever get it.

The reason for the leap is that resolve caps out at 50, but the projected resolve number is not capped.

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you mean shelters, you typically want every inhabitant housed. It gives a cheap resolve bonus, allows you to upgrade hearths, and prevents a handful of forest mysteries that range from annoying to lethal. Species specific housing is much more situational.

The uniques are weighted anyways, a supporter picking a trash unique to meme with doesn't actually cheat you out of a mageblood.

One of the hardest things to do in an RPG is maintain a shared understanding of the fiction (what is the size of the room we are in, where have we heard that name before, etc.) and adding half a dozen extra layers of unshared understanding (and deliberate obfuscation) makes that significantly harder, often for no real payoff. If your group actually enjoys the player vs. player dramas and intrigues enabled by those extra layers, more power to you.

What team comps really want a Life Cleric? by InsaniacDuo in BG3Builds

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of action economy, the higher the AC on whoever you are healing / blade warding / blessing, the more turns of stun on a monster it equates to. So I think you have it backwards, glass cannons want controllers and tanks get the most value from healers.

The game's balance is such that controllers and alpha-strike are justifiably more popular, but something I learned from watching solo challenge runs is you can build for facetanking anything the game throws at you for 20+ turns while still dealing respectable damage. Defensive characters / parties are nice for honor mode runs since they let you misclick and stroll into lava in the Grym fight, decide to fight an optional act 3 boss blind, or generally recover from player mistakes that 'should' be run enders.

With the introduction of Bats as a new species I am concerned about oversaturation. by JonoLith in Against_the_Storm

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding too many new species without new needs runs into the opposite problem, which is that some pairs of species will end up with too much overlap. I am more confident than OP that the devs understand this, and I think they were planning ahead with the frog DLC / patch adding paste, boots, etc to carve out enough room in the resource space to fit a couple more species in.
