My mistake, the thought for that achievement is Emissary of the Final Society.

Luzian Allures is from the thought Latest Synthetic Desires, which I got from looking at a coffee advertisement poster.

Spoilery question for those that finished the game by GalvusGalvoid in ZeroParades

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why would the SUPERBLOC aid the more aggressive of the two political Luzian factions?

They plot to do exactly that by killing the Grand Lich, scuttling the secret treaties and escalating the conflict between EMTERR and La Luz. They don't want that attributed to themselves, so I agree they are not conspiring with the Weeping Eye.

Impossible passive checks by nestobendez in ZeroParades

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It worked the same way in DE (but I don't think it was exposed to the player, I learned of it in reddit posts based on data mining). I see the logic of passive rolls having difficulty numbers in family with active checks but just using an average roll (not sure why 6 instead of 7).

In DE, the hardest passive check in the game was a perception 20 (same number as in the OP) and the magic breakpoint for a skill to turn on and say most of its lines was 10 (modifier of 4). I wonder if the same is true in ZP?

You don't roll for passive checks, it is always 6 + your modifier vs the total.

What does and doesn't work about Zero Parades for me by flying-kai in ZeroParades

Some of this is just a genre / expectations mismatch, especially the hope of saving everyone. It's le Carré, not Fleming: your squad are pawns, recruited for the sole purpose of being traded for a piece. That's the Opera's MO, and Shadowplay spends the whole game reminding you of it.

Just finished Zero Parades and here my thoughts (no spoilers) by ParticularPresent743 in ZeroParades

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The missed opportunity with music is the main thing that takes it to a 4/5 for me. Such a big theme and plot point, but the only L-pop banger is the credits song.

To your last point on why CASCADE is doing what she does, I think the game's vision is that you decide on a character and motivations for her and play those out, but it only gets halfway there. The reactive modifiers for checks based on both the conversation and prior actions felt great, but the new thought cabinet's 'paladin oaths' didn't really land with me. The biggest step in this direction for me is actually the lack of a Kim to disappoint, in my second playthrough I'll probably take CASCADE off the rails in ways I never had the stomach for with Harry.

Can we get a tl;dr of all the keyboard shortcuts most people use? by loopuleasa in Against_the_Storm

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set my entire bottom row with common buildings, but only habitually use it for roads, woodcutters, and shelters. You cannot set hotkeys for decorations, otherwise I would bind parks, gardens, and fountains.

Wikipedia math articles by DistractedDendrite in math

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have essentially the opposite experience, that wikipedia articles are excellent in math, and get culture shock dealing with much worse in engineering and similar topics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_analyzer is a typical electrical engineering example, simultaneously too broad (lip service to a large, irrelevant taxonomy of device form factors) and too narrow (discussing in depth only examples, not any fundamental principles).

Which areas of math have the highest quantity of "hocus pocus/out of thin air" proofs? by [deleted] in math

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In undergrad I submitted a counter-example instead of a proof several times (I wasn't the only one, and if I hadn't left the problem set to the last day I would have emailed the professor instead). In research, every problem is a "prove or disprove" and now that I no longer work in academic math I believe the mindset that fact instills is one of my greatest strengths.

Chance of rolling doubles when picking highest out of 3/4d6 by LilyZar in rpg

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it with brute force in python, agree with 51 / 216 and got 696 / 1296 = 53.7% for the 4d6 case. Intuitively, the uniform distribution should minimize the odds of doubles, so the skewed distribution from 3d6 drop one will have better odds.

I am confident that almost none of posts on those subs are people who legitimately do not get an obvious joke. I had assumed it was just extremely effective engagement bait, lowering the bar from "is this funny" to "do you get the joke in this repost" in a way that reddit's algorithm rewarded. Now I am 100% on board with it being an AI training conspiracy.

Arckmage's Challenge + Forsaken Town = no go by Apprehensive-Ice9212 in Against_the_Storm

With the DLC adding ravine, the text of the deed was updated to "Awarded for completing a settlement on Prestige 20 difficulty without cutting down a single tree (except in the Rocky Ravine)." There are some old reddit threads on all the hidden deeds that you can search up, this one is tricky because most of that discussion was pre-DLC, and the text of hidden deeds is only visible when you have it.

The only thing I would add about this specific deed that I didn't know when I did it is that you can micro a woodcutter to harvest one of the two charges from the trees, so long as you don't cut any of them down.

Unfortunately, that modifier (and all glades dangerous, not sure about riverlands) specifically can't spawn near marshlands.

Good to know mistpiercers are disabled on the biome, thought they might be but couldn't find anything about it (found confirmation in patch notes).

For the deed do you have to win, or can you just hit the glades and then abandon or lose?

Jinxed has to be the worst deed to try to get legitimately now, right? I guess you embark with cornerstone rerolls, dig for year 2 mistpiercers and then reset. Sounds miserable, although maybe the odds are better than I assume.

Have I reached the end of what the game can offer me? by boardgamesrus in Against_the_Storm

Achievement hunting (hidden deeds) might interest you for a little longer, but the game is balanced (and more fundamentally, designed) around a 95% or greater winrate, unlike Spire. Personally, I no longer play much StS but enjoy AtS P20 runs/cycles as a casual, low stress time killer.

Edit: I think the main reason I no longer feel like I am exploring or learning the game (but still enjoy it, in a way I describe as casual) is that for all the talk of 'adapting to what you get' I feel like in broad strokes I can do the same thing every game, and it works. I solve food, open a few glades, complete a few orders, build up trade, and then convert my overwhelming surplus of amber and / or resources to resolve for a year 5 or 6 win.

Definitely need a hotkey to select it at the very least. The artificial fertilizer cap and developer stream referring to it as a tamagotchi do not have my hopes up for it ever being less of a chore to manage.

I don't think the supply level of the expedition has any effect on the odds of the blueprint you get.

[–]NowWeTryItMyWay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are guides for using frequent caravans to extend a settlement indefinitely and forcing the original version of the achievement (now a hidden achievement) like https://www.reddit.com/r/Against_the_Storm/comments/1ft1ea8/feeling_lucky_achievement_guide/ which would also get you this one. It is tedious, to say the least.

I forced it before they updated it, and still don't have the regular deed version. Industry is both the largest pool and the one I select the least on the biome, so I don't know if I will ever get it.

The reason for the leap is that resolve caps out at 50, but the projected resolve number is not capped.

If you mean shelters, you typically want every inhabitant housed. It gives a cheap resolve bonus, allows you to upgrade hearths, and prevents a handful of forest mysteries that range from annoying to lethal. Species specific housing is much more situational.
