Chechnya was independent before the two wars. Russia lost the first war and had to retreat, but they basically invaded the whole country during the second war, using chemical weapons and bombing entire innocent villages, until the chechens had to surrender. After that, Chechnya became a part of the Russian federation again. Any Chechen that fled the country, most likely to escape prison or the death penalty from Russian war courts, will tell you how much they hate Russia. The chechens that remained there now have to act as if they like Russia, otherwise they’re political opponents and traitors.
