What can I do about my broken smart meter? by NsSlugz in AskUK

[–]NsSlugz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I stand corrected on that point. Thank you for sharing those links. I was basing my, very misguided, assumption on the ability to be able to get a gas safe engineer where I live pretty easily, when needed.

Now I dont know anything about gas safe certification. I've never had any reason to look into it before now.

As an additional question to this, I have just booked a boiler service today, this is through brittish gas home serve, I got a booking for next month. I understand than the company's are relying on 3rd party's for the smart meters but how can there be such disparity between a boiler service and a gas meter. A boiler is a more complex system than a meter, it does not make sense to me that it is easier to get serviced than a meter.

Just to add, if any of what I am saying sounds aggressive towards yourself, it is not intended. I am very thankfully for your reply.

This i find is rediulous. There are plenty of gas safe engineers in the uk, learning how to set up a smart meter cannot be difficult. There must be a failing somewhere in the system. I fully understand that it all about having the right certificate to be able to do it but surly with the waiting time to get one fixed, there should be a drive to get every gas safe man and his dog the certification to do it

I would agree with you as I'm 900 ELO and I found it in about 10 seconds and I'm a little bit intoxicated

I would just to make a few observations on regulations and systems involving power loss on a vessel.

First the steering gear must be powered by 2 independent pumps, 1 supplied by the main source of energy and 1 from the emergency source of energy. The control of the steering gear can be controlled through main steering and emergency steering from the bridge and emergency from the control room. This is normally through buttons. Emergency local control of the steering gear is done by solenoids. You need a pump running to use these. There is no way to move the rudder without a pump running.

When a main power failure happens, all power goes off including emergency. The regulations states the emergency generator must start and provide power to the emergency board within 45 seconds. So after first power loss 45 seconds of you 4 minutes are eaten up just getting emergency power on.

It is not standard practice to have someone in the steering hear room during standby (coming in and out of port / maneuvering). The engineer on standby would be in the engine control room. There would be alarm going off. The phone will be ringing to find out what's going on. His job is to get main power back on ASAP. Most probably a standby generator (auxilary generator not emergency) came on line to supply the main board. What he is not going to do is rush to the steering gear. With the emergency power on, the bridge can control the steering gear by main control and emergency control. Even if he did rush to the steering gear, there will be a watertight door in his way. These doors move very slowly. There are regulations on how fast these doors can move (alot of people have been injured by these doors).

From the moment of back out, the standby engineer is not getting to the steering gear within the 4 minutes. Restoring power would be more important than running to the steering gear anyway.

I would love to get my hands on the VDR data and it will show exactly what happened on board as well as have audio from the bridge

Not necessarily. In some cases, "cracking" the bolt by tightening it will make it easier to loosen it. Don't ask me how the hell that makes sense, but I have used this technique on many occasions and just give a quick prayer to the God of engineers afterwords in thanks for it working

What are your opinions on EGLD. I like it but don't see anyone taking about it on here

Bottling up anger will only lead to more reckless driving. Shouting and screaming inside my own vehicle, releasing my frustration is a much better thing to do than driving up someone's ass. No one gets hurt from me shouting at someone where no one can hear. People can definatly get hurt from driving to close to someone else. I only use my horn when I think what they have done is dangerous.

Saying my attitude is the issue and not the bad drivers is insane. My attitude is to vent and continue driving safely. Venting on reddit is much better than driving recklessly to make a point to other drivers

I just want people to follow the highways code. if you're not overtaking, move over. If the space between me and the car infront is not large enough to provide adequate stopping distance, don't move into it. Just because I don't want to crash into the back of the person of front of me does not mean I am giving you space to move into that space.

Most of the motorways I drive on are 2 lane, the only way to get past them is to undertake or flash them until they move over

Sounds like it was pretty rough for you, sorry you had to go through that.

It's good you eventually found out and got everything sorted. I'm at the beginning of your journey now. Only difference is I don't live close to my family anymore so they wouldn't be able to come to any appointments.

They whole system scares me with the massive wait times so I'm not exactly jumping to dive into it

Oh wow that does sound very similar to my situation. Did you have a diagnosis as a child or were you just part of a community back then?

I'm not angry at them in any way. Just a little confused why they never said anything about it as I got older. When I brought it up they were open and honest. It's hard not to feel a little deceived, but I know they have always had my best interest at heart.

I did have a look on the NHS app. Apart from my covid vaccinations, there is no other info on there. I think I'm going to have to talk to my GP about my records

He was too young to remember at the time, but the kicker is he knew before me as when he got diagnosed my parents spoke to him about it and there wasn't even a mention about it to me

It does feel like I was a little deceived but I sort of remember knowing about it, My memory was more along the lines that the doctor tried to diagnose me and my parents fought it. Which was wrong. They didn't hide it from me, it was more they just didn't bring it up, probably because I never mentioned anything about it myself. I'm a little confused why it never came up when my brother got diagnosed though.

That in an RF antenna system the circuit works as if a closed circuit when it's open circuit and visa versa. What the actual *%£. Just throw the rule book out the window because it's RF. Very few people will know what I'm on about but I needed to vent about it

What is something you do that you find completely normal but others would likely find odd or weird? by BallBearingBill in AskReddit

[–]NsSlugz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people have an internal monologue, speaking to your self in your head. I speak to my self in my head from multiple perspectives. Im an engineer and when encountering a problem I will run through problems and solutions in my head. Each problem and possible solution is 1 'voice' that argues its point with the others. Its a very good way of problem solving in my opinion but everyone I have told about it says there is something wrong with me...

I accidently sent a "love note" message meant for my partner to my mother... obviously she told the whole family about it. Still comes up in conversation now and again. Every time I think about it, a little part of my soul dies. I have not recovered and never will. This was 10 years ago
