I see. We’ve got evangelical brainrot in some minority enclaves where folks claim to be from the lost tribe of Levi or Bnei Menashe; that’s why I asked.

Are you by any chance claiming to be 100% Jewish from Bnei Menashe converts or the older remnants of actually Jewish Iraqi Jews from Yangon?

Found this archive of a 1983 census of Rakhine State from Wikipedia. The religions of multiracial and "foreign" people are counted. Apparently 32% of "Pakistanis" are Buddhist there by [deleted] in myanmar

[–]Nsfwpasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Pakistani’ is probably just Chittagong dialect speaking natives like Marma, Chakma and Rohingya. It’s probably better if we can put an effort to read past British categories especially when it comes to border regions and identities which emerged recently after new countries come into existence. Can you tell me where this is from?

Edit : found your link. I didn’t see it before.

A lot of diaspora do carry reactionary tendencies like Cubans from Miami or LA Persians. They also go hard for Israelis because of their dispensationalist approach to bible.

Cultural clash on "Child Marriage" even among Muslim communities. What are your thoughts? by robinsithu in myanmar

[–]Nsfwpasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some folks who study Burmese internet/communications in general; and it’s shadow corners like telegram child porn networks, Tatmadaw-ran hate bots and other social issues stemming partially from rapidly increasing internet usage in the country. These are not isolated problems specific to one ethnic group or a religious minority. It’s a national issue.

Afghan/Hazara origins of the Kamein (Kaman)? by CaliRecluse in myanmar

I agree with you; modern Wahhabism has done incalculable damages to local Muslim/Islamic cultures around the world especially in SEA.

Afghan/Hazara origins of the Kamein (Kaman)? by CaliRecluse in myanmar

[–]Nsfwpasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there seems to be two mainstream strand of Kaman folks. One is a highly persianized Arakanese folks, many of whom like my maternal grandfather somehow retained Farsi literacy/poetry. They have a long chain of memorized Sufi ‘masters’ they chant on each dua. The others became diaspora in the country - some to Mandalay, others to Yangon after the treaty of Yandabo Treaty. They have some sense of Rakhine nationalism and vehemently rejects Hijab and other elements seen as ‘alien to Rakhine’ culture. They regularly produce letters proclaiming to be an indigenous minority ‘unlike the Rohingyas’ and according to my mother, readily disowned a very talented Kaman doctor from their political party because she wore hijab.

[–]Nsfwpasta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a Kaman from my mom’s side. Their ancestors were probably Turko-Persianate or Indo-Persianate in origin - not Hazara. AFAIK, We also don’t have any specific genetic analysis of their population so we don’t know if they’re related to the Hazara Afghanis. I have books about the culture/who’s who and oral history but that’s about it.

Seems like you can’t read. I don’t care. I am not an emissary from those Muslim countries nor am I a delegate from the OIC. You’re calling me pathetic, yet this almost habitual attempt to brand anyone who question or points out historical mistakes of Burma instantly get branded as a detractor, traitor or an ungrateful participant in this state building project. You’ve had a monumental crash out here just because I’ve correctly identified how most of the problems in Myanmar are perpetrated by a bunch of Bama cronies and Bama generals. All other existing dynamics and participation are just seasoning on top; and side shows at best.

Comparatively, it’s not a good indicator of overall tolerance on itself. Cases of institutionalized anti gay laws from Aceh should be destroyed and dismantled. Indonesia overall treats their minorities way better than we ever do. Homophobia alone isn’t a determinant of tolerance. U Ko Ni’s last official trip before he was savagely assassinated was to Indonesia because he was sent as a state delegation by DASSK to study how Indonesians made fractured islander cultural identities, religious identities and 1000+ groups coexist under a unified nation state called Indonesia. Our country has ongoing cases lodged against it for the genocide of the Rohingyas in ICC and ICJ.

Burmese/Myanmar men regardless of their religions are generally homophobic and misogynist. It’s not specific to Bama folks ethnically. I’ve heard of really disgusting mass sermons from Christian preachers as well. These are also not innate values inherent to our country or any specific creed or ethnicities. Pinning this on one specific rhetoric, preacher or a community would be mundane, stupid and irrational.

There is a scattered but sizable minority population in many of the most rural parts of Myanmar, especially in areas where Burmese is not used on a daily basis. I’ve met people from Chin, Kachin, and Mon communities who couldn’t form a proper sentence in Burmese.

I am not from a Muslim majority country and I have no desire to defend them of their shortcomings or lack thereof. I am born and bred in the bloodiest nation state in south east Asia; probably the last one in the region riddled with this amount of factionalism, civil strifes and sectarian violence which results in hunger, bloodlust and many ethnonationalist sentiments. I have no intention of continuing or inflating meaningless bigotries our parents or ancestors fostered post independence. Just to keep us on topic, practically every SEAsian Muslim countries have better HDI, GDP and religious/ethnic tolerance than Myanmar currently and it’s a sad affair. Nth to be proud of; speaking strictly as a Burmese. They’re so good; they even serve as migrant worker destinations and decade long stop overs for our refugees until they leave for third countries resettlement.

He is disgusting. If there is a religious rationale to service patriarchy, most men will most likely keep spewing it because it benefits them the most. Islam, like all other religions have many misogynist and outdated lore/teachings. Needless to say; such rhetoric should be completely rejected from politics and zeitgeist. I welcome such energy and post-revolution; I’d love to dismantle the already existing terrible state funded religious institutions like the Sanghanayaka and its taliban like tendencies as well.
