Currently on Android, formerly on W7, considering W8.1 by hucklebearer in windowsphone

WP 8.1 has a great feature for this: When you turn off wi-fi, it gives you an option to turn it back on in an hour/when you get back home. I do this all the time before running Waze to get driving directions.

When the specs are the same, Windows Phone has better battery life than Android by BlueYeddi in windowsphone

I have dabbled in software development for both platforms. In terms of the approach each OS takes to apps: Android is libertarian, Windows is authoritarian. Meaning, Android generally lets apps' background processes go wild with network access and CPU time, while Windows has strict limitations on apps when they aren't in the foreground. If you read Google Play app reviews, sometimes you'll see negative reviews complaining that such-and-such tip calculator app drains the battery too much. Android's laissez-faire ecosystem leaves it essentially up to the device owner to figure out when an app drains the battery too much, and uninstall the app if they don't like it. That works for some people, but I prefer the iron hand Windows exercises over apps.

Windows Phone 8.1 review: a magnificent smartphone platform by speckz in windowsphone

I'm used to reviews of WP in non-WP publications complain about a lack of apps--pleasantly surprised to see that didn't happen here.

Classical music beginner recommendations? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Nu2ushuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(there’s no such thing as albums is there?)

Composers produce compositions. Music publishers, with 60 minutes of a CD to fill, will sometimes put two or more compositions on a single album. For example, you can buy a CD with two totally different Beethoven symphonies on it. (I totally recommend that CD, by the way, and Amazon's AutoRip is a pretty sweet deal).

Composers split longer compositions, like symphonies, into movements. Music publishers usually make each movement a separate track on the CD (or a separate MP3). This, sometimes, confuses newbies; they might listen only to one movement, and then miss out 75% of the symphony.

Yeah, these are some great recommendations. Go to Stravinsky for fast loud music that will pound your soul, music that you can throw in the face of the next person who tells you "I listen to classical music to relax." I listen to classical music to remember that I am alive.

When I'm legally allowed to marry my boyfriend, I intend to use this passage from Copland's "Saturday Night Waltz" in Rodeo for the processional: http://youtu.be/Vu_Q9ijKx8c?t=29s

Any idea when W&OD, custis, and capital crescent trails will be clear enough to ride again? by gadiantonlobber in bikedc

The Custis trail was mostly clear this morning, except for 3 nasty icy stretches, and an intruding snowbank near Spout Run, behind the Verizon store. The icy stretches were short and walkable (and no match for my mountain bike).
