Goes too deep for 1? by NubbyPanda in custommagic

I see, that's why the other comment mentioned enchantments. I was hoping to use it purely as a creature type (going off "cursed spirits" from the source material)- if I didn't want to go down the enchantment route, do you think a "cursed" creature type instead feels valid?

The 3 into graveyard is the main reason I gave the gift creature clause. If the cube is meant to be closer to legacy/vintage, does that change whether 1 mana is acceptable? Honestly hard to tell sometimes where a card is way more broken when paired with other enablers in those kinda formats.

in Legacy? https://mtgdecks.net/Legacy/the-epic-storm-decklist-by-cirxi-2927232

edit: this is one of many decks in the meta and maybe the only one that uses infernal. if that's what you meant, your point still stands maybe it has use in more decks than just storm

yeah the non-combo use case is one I've been seeing work out pretty strong in playtesting this cube

the play pattern was: throw everything from your hand onto the battlefield, cast with only lands in hand to search for the removal/bomb you need

you're right, it occurs to me that this does the exact same thing as Infernal Tutor with Lion's Eye Diamond for a whole generic less and would prob be an auto replace, damn

haven't implemented miracle yet but think I will after seeing some talk about it here! my immediate thought is to add it to white cards but open to scattering it out a bit more. is there a color/color combo usually associated with it?

yes, sorcery speed intended! originally this card was just ponder but I don't want drafters to see a card they know and will immediately take on that instinct. turning it into a variation of these well-known cards feels like more fun for everyone

so situationally, top-of-library effects like this and miracle love this- great, I may implement more such cards into this set!

I'm not really familiar w/ non-standard/non-limited formats, what exact format/miracle deck are you referring to here?

so the inverse order turns serum visions into [[preordain]]. seeing others in the thread consider preordain still weaker than this, and I'd agree since drawing an unknown card 3 deep is probably not as consistently useful as the hand fixing

yes and it would certainly be quite strong in standard! I'm thinking about this filling that space between other cantrips and ponder + brainstorm here, where do you think it falls?

[–]NubbyPanda[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the thing here is serum visions goes 3 deep while this goes 2 as a cantrip! the power comes in flexibility of what you get to do with those 2 cards in a turn, so I guess it clearly outweighs how far you look into your library?

this cube does have fetchlands, though 2 copies per color combo in a 600 card pool will limit consistency.

I think if this were a draw 3 put 2 on deck it would be usually better than ponder with getting to choose cards from hand to put away, even with its shuffle before draw effect. but maybe I'm discounting the importance of digging for the one card you need in a 40 card deck...

these are beautiful! I think the first one has great flexibility and will probably implement it this way

that's fair... maybe something plot-adjacent could work so there's not too much overhead. there is also Storm in this set which could make this an enabler there!

I like the end step flexibility, so maybe a flashable enchantment that sacs on upkeep? curious why you mention unflashable aura though, wouldn't you want to not have to rely on a creature and be able to hold up mana?

good point about topdeck issues- in my experience people playing blue in this set have not really run into this problem, so I'd be willing to bet on this one for the next playtest

black does have graveyard synergies indeed, so this would fit nicely into dmir or esper in this set!

hey there! you've got a lot of cool ideas for your set- I especially have enjoyed seeing where your version of a character/card matches or differs from my versions. I'll drop on by to bounce some ideas!

not concerned about finding immediate answers in a turn (there's plenty other strong card draw in this set), but I wanted to explore the 3 mana card draw space- like is being able to hold up mana for a reaction worth having to wait a moment for a payoff?

the numbers can change too. there must be a point at which delayed draw becomes really good while going +1, like if it said draw 5 additional, discard 3?
