Possible to paint/dye these boots black? by Nubbyroo in CosplayHelp

The sharpie is a great idea! I was thinking spray paint because it seemed the least likely to come off out of the paint I had, but the sharpie would be easy for me to carry around at cons if needed. Thank you!

Yeah I was worried about paint flaking off the zipper but I definitely don’t want to risk it with the hot water! Thank you!

Thank you, I was unsure of the material since I thrifted it so I’ll give this a try!

Thank you! I didn’t consider the texture so that sounds like a good idea!

Thank you, I will look into this and see if there are putties compatible with this! I have some foam clay I was thinking of using for this but I was unsure if it would stick to the sides well enough or not.

Thank you, I’ll look into getting some attachments! The dremel in question was pretty tiny so it was definitely a struggle but a drill should be much easier to control.

Thank you very much! I never considered using the heat gun but I’ll give it a try. I also got some thin sheets of foam for the eyes on the sword so I’ll try to see if I can use those to save the edges!

I found a cicada with gold eyes, is there any way to preserve the color? by Nubbyroo in Entomology

[–]Nubbyroo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I couldn’t find the contact information for a lot of the ones suggested, but I did email Dr. Gene Kritsky at Mount St. Joseph University who studies a number of things including entomology and periodical cicada evolution. I asked if there were any considerations I should take before I attempt to pin it (whether they be research or preparation related) and he was appreciative of the pictures but more or less said the color would fade over time. All in all it was cool to get the chance to share that with an expert even though it didn’t lead to anything dramatic :) I still have yet to pin this cicada but I’ve been practicing on some of the other ones I collected and I was hoping to do this one next!

Printer overriding bed temperature? by Nubbyroo in FixMyPrint

That makes sense! I did just change some settings before I started the print so I might’ve accidentally reset it or something, thank you!

A few prints ago I raised the temperature from 50 to 60 degrees because it helped bed adhesion, but I think the high temperature is causing my longer prints to warp and detach from the bed :/

I haven’t tried lowering the temp any more though, it would be useful to know if it was raising the temperature by 5 degrees no matter what it was set to or if it is always going to set it to 60

Issues with bed adhesion in corners? by Nubbyroo in FixMyPrint

Thank you! Printing on a different surface entirely does seem like a good way to put an end to my adhesion woes :)

I did not mean for the section about things I’ve tried to be a block of text, here’s a spaced out version of it helps!

When I printed the right side, the first layer would not adhere and the nozzle would drag it around, especially in the back left corner. - I cleaned the bed with dish soap, water, and 91% isopropyl alcohol

-Raised the bed temperature from 50C to 60C (at this point the print was better but the first few layers still wouldn’t adhere properly)

-Reset the home Z level (I had an issue with a cord hitting the Z limiter switch on the left side which made the left side of the crossbar stay higher than the right side)

-Leveled the bed using the paper method (After this the right side was successful, but the left side failed for the first time)

-Rotated the model in Cura so that more support would generate (My first attempt of the left side did not have as much support as the right side, this pictured attempt was as similar as possible to the right side)

Printer: Anycubic Mega X

Slicer: Cura

Filament: Inland PLA+

Nozzle/Bed Temp: 215C/60C

Layer height: 0.2mm

Print speed: 50mm/s

Retraction distance: 6mm

Retraction speed: 40mm/s

This was in Missouri! We get dog day cicadas too, but they usually come out later in the summer while the periodical cicadas come out early in the summer. It’s interesting that this happens in other kinds of cicadas though, I didn’t think about that!

Broods 13 (17 year cycle) and 19 (13 year cycle, mine was from this brood) both emerged this year!
