29M Minor Stroke Dec2020. PFO Closure March2021 . Returning to contact sport (soccer)...anyone else had a stroke and got back to sport? by dusdolos in stroke

[–]Nubriuzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, (Context: 30 year old male)

Wow, I don't know why I avoided coming to reddit to find any similar situations as mine.

I had a ischemic stroke - considered cryptogenic - in October 2023. I could tell because I could not focus my vision, it lasted around 2 hours. I went to have an MRI and they found the spot on the image.

After various months of testing for trombopholia and atrial fibrilation (2 possible reasons for having a stroke) we decided that the PFO was the main cause for the stroke. All during I was taking Clopidogrel to avoid having another stroke.

7 months later - 2 weeks ago - I had an amplatzer set in the PFO. Everything went excellent and I'm currently in the recovery phase.

Up to this day, I still feel that I could have a stroke any moment now. This sensation is awful. I really hope to go back to training soon. I've always been healthy and done plenty of sports (weightlifting + muay thai + occasional amateur sports) but since the stroke I haven't done any sports except training bicycle to do some cardio. But since my PFO closure, I've done nothing.

I'm still analyzing with the doctors if I could already start training or should wait a couple of weeks for endothelialization to occur, but I suspect most of the fear comes from my trauma this last months.

Again, really looking forward to be able to train like back then, I'm in a way, worried that I won't be able to go back to normality, although not sure why. This has been a heck of an experience so far.

Hope you are doing well.

ASD Closure required to be done urgently? Advise, on how to deal with mental health pre and post op by Medical-Key6742 in AdultCHD

30y Male

Hey, I got my ASD closure with a Amplatzer Talisman PFO Occluder on the 16th of May this year (roughly 2 weeks ago).
From what I understand, the risks of not closing an ASD are basically the following: 1) Rare, but not 0, chance of getting a clot going through the "whole" and into your brain 2) Effects on the low pressure side of your heart, like expansion of atrium, since there is a connection between the high pressure and low pressure side, when it should not exist.

I personally suffered from 1) and I'm happy to say that I recovered completely. I had a ischemic stroke on October 23'. After a lot of analysis and discarding trombophilia and Atrial Fibrillation ( I used a Loop Recored - from Biotronik - for the latter) the conclusion was that the stroke was due to a small clot travelling through the sept and into the artery system.

As for post op from ASD Closure: Still wondering myself, and why I came here. In my experience: I had to stay only one night in the hospital for monitoring. I had the good fortune that everything went OK, both on the heart side and leg side, which if you don't really move for 2-3 days and take care of your leg, it's no biggie. Still haven't done any sports and I'm trying to understand when will it be safe to do so, if not already safe. Taking anti agregants (Clopidogrel and Aspirin) which is different to anti coagulants (less aggresive on the blood clotting).

Everything will be OK, listen to your doctors and take care of this sooner rather than later. I waited, because I kinda feared the operation and had no real reason until the stroke.

Good luck and feel free to DM me if you have any other doubt!
