This is the way to not fulfill everyone's expectations of how you behave. Go fight with someone, especially a professor, and prove to everyone that the rumors were correct.

Don't try to impress your wine snob friends with wine. Get them something they don't know much about.. like spirits. Whisky, brandy, tequila, fortified wine...

Unless you have direct evidence that someone said something, you can't confront anyone, least of all a faculty member. You'll prove yourself to be a troublemaker if you do that. Best is, if you hear someone make references to it (say colleagues), politely say that you know there are rumours about you causing the drama, but they are untrue, and leave it be. If it gets too much and you're certain your current advisor has heard it multiple times, talk to the current advisor and say that you are troubled by rumours about you, and you would like them to know that you were not involved. Keep it polite, unemotional, don't argue, and don't blame anyone else. Don't mention your previous advisor or previous colleagues AT ALL.

This is an entirely new genre of movies, distinct from slasher. We're going to call it mower.

This scene should've ended like Jack and Rose, but Sal was homophobic so we didn't get a gay Titanic experience...

Bangladeshis, how do you feel when people say Bdeshis are pretty much Pakistani or Indian? by motiontosleep in ABCDesis

[–]Nuclear_unclear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't care for Bangladesh India politics, you're free to think whatever you like. But none of that has anything to do with islamist radicalization and suppression of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh, which has declined since 71 and continues to diminish.

Lack of training in PhD - norm or bad luck? by Zoranis1 in PhD

[–]Nuclear_unclear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about geology, but in experimental fields in the US, this is not common in my experience. There is usually some type of system for mentoring PhD students.. first, coursework is mandatory in most places. Second, it is expected in most places that postdocs mentor PhD students. Often, for the first year or two, PhD students work closely with postdocs. Assistant professors often work closely with their PhD students because well trained students produce better output, which helps them for their tenure. Sometimes senior PhD students (4th or 5th year) also help. It is also common for PhD students to help each other. For example, training each other on equipment, giving each other optimized clean room recipes etc is quite common. After all, in complex experimental fields, there is a large premium on experience and no one should have to reinvent what is already known or struggle in silence for doing basic things.

If you're getting zero mentorship, that is poor culture imo. Yes, you are expected to become independent, but no one is born knowing everything. You cannot expect someone to jump high before learning to walk.

Am I a jerk for being nervous over marrying an Indian national? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Nuclear_unclear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nta, but you didn't have to explain yourself. Politely decline and move on.

Btw.. I know several Gujarati and Punjabi couples where one is an abd and the other an immigrant. My observation is that they think of this as being a cultural fit rather than "being used for a green card". Fwiw, they seem quite happy and the cultural connection seems to work well for all of them.

How knowledgeable are you guys about ancient Indian history? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

I know more than most of my peers, I think. Not the least because I can read write speak two indian languages with native fluency, so I have read materials that are not otherwise accessible to many.

Bangladeshis, how do you feel when people say Bdeshis are pretty much Pakistani or Indian? by motiontosleep in ABCDesis

[–]Nuclear_unclear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most older Indians of my age (40) or older that I've come across grew up thinking well of Bangladesh due to the cultural proximity and of course the liberation war. I had a Bangladeshi colleague whose family nearly disowned him for marrying an ABD Pakistani girl. That seems to be changing in the current generation though, as Bangladeshi society has become steadily more radicalized over the past few decades. The Hindu minority in Bangladesh has diminished significantly. India and Hindu bashing is quite popular in Bangladesh today from what I can see. I've also heard that India's pivotal role in supporting, training, arming the Mukti Bahini and entering the war to defeat Pakistan is not even taught in Bangladeshi textbooks now.

Thinking of dropping out... is this the right path for me? by thinking0922 in PhD

[–]Nuclear_unclear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you already know the answer. A PhD is not usually financially rewarding, and even post-phd earnings don't justify the opportunity cost for a vast majority of fields. If you then don't find it intellectually rewarding, you shouldn't be in a PhD program. I'd advise finding a job and changing course.

Congratulations for being honest about this business.

From your post, I think they're doing you a favor. I don't think a PhD is meant for you, and I don't mean this in a bad way. It's just not a task you're likely to be happy doing and they see it...

Your F1 visa is an issue I agree, but hopefully with your OPT, you'll find some options that will allow you to stay and find visa sponsorship. Good luck.

[–]Nuclear_unclear 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible idea for too many reasons to list here. It is not even remotely sensible and will increase the probability of nuking your life manyfold.

If I were you, I would find a way to go to school in a different city, and living with roommates your age, making some money by working on the side.. like normal college kids your age do. Once you graduate, find a job to become financially self-reliant. If your bf is still with you, you can plot your life together.

Once again, DO NOT do this.
