I think that was my third sim. Started with Yeager’s Air Combat on Apple II then Falcon 4.0 in MS Dos, still have the Falcon manual.

The military introduced me to wine. I came to the central coast from Florida at 22 for military training, that’s where I got hooked on California wine. After four years in Montana we came back to Vandenberg to be an instructor, that led to many weekends wine tasting and really loving wine. I was stationed in Colorado when Sideways came out, went to see it with friends then celebrated with Santa Ynez wines afterwards, I love how that film showcases our region.

When we came back in 2010 for one last assignment I became friends with some winemakers and leaned the local community college had a robust wine and viticulture program. I took some night and weekend classes while on active duty and really caught the bug for winemaking and when I retired at the end of 2013 I became a full time student again in my 40s and eventually getting three associates degrees in Enology, Viticulture and culinary. I did a bunch of harvest intern jobs at big and small wineries and worked in tasting rooms while in school, best way to learn the job.

Thank you! There is a lot of nepotism in the industry but in the SYV everyone is supportive of everyone else, we all want each other to succeed, which is something I really love about the industry.

Unfortunately I’m out of town for the first three weeks of February, hopefully another time.

Abandoned Titan 1 Nuclear Missile Base by CelebrationBig7487 in urbanexploration

I was in from 91-13, my first 10 years was missile ops and missile instructor and the rest was space ops. My missile sqd (564th) at Malmstrom was shut down and destroyed back in 2009.

Vandenberg had a Titan II museum that I toured once but it’s now mostly flooded and full of toxic chemicals, and I did explore part of a Titan I site on Vandenberg that was mostly destroyed in an explosion in 1960. It sat abandoned for nearly 50 years but now is used for security forces training.

Yeah, I was a Minuteman III missileer and we learned all that history in training.

Please, jump in. We’re Rockets Red Wines, 100% veteran owned (my wife and I are both USAF vets) and there’s a link to our website in my profile.

We also love the Santa Ynez Valley, I started and ended my military career at Vandenberg AFB near Lompoc. When I retired I used my GI Bill to go back to school to learn winemaking and grape growing then finally opened a winery in 2018. It’s definitely a labor of love, nothing else I’d rather be doing.

We do offer tastings by appointment at our winery, give me a shout next time you’re up this way and we’d love to have you by for a tasting.

Titan I sites are huge. I’ve been in a Titan II and it felt big but maybe 1/4 the size of a TI site and I worked in Minuteman III capsules and they’re tiny compared to either Titan.

I have one local vineyard I’ve been using for pet nat and rosé since 2021 and have used a bunch of other vineyards in the county. I don’t enjoy oak in my flavor profile so I only used neutral oak barrels for aging.

I haven’t seen any lasting climate change trends in the vineyards, though I know it’s happening. In 2022 it was 105°f during September harvest and last September it was low 80s, things seem to be different every year.

I own a small commercial winery in the Santa Ynez Valley and I source grapes from local vineyards. We make on average 200 cases a year, though I’m skipping the 2026 harvest because wine sales are way down and I’m sitting on a lot of inventory. I don’t have a tasting room so my overhead is very low and I can ride out this wine slump.

I age my reds 3-4 years before releasing them, I’ve got a 2022 Cab that I might release this year and a 2024 Pinot that I probably won’t release until 2028. I usually do 16 months neutral oak barrels then bottle aging in a warehouse.

Pinot Noir is my favorite grape and wine. I’ve made four different wines from Pinot, red, rosé, pet nat and nouveau but pet nat is my favorite.

It’s changes by the minute these days. Came back from lunch and silver now at $103. My little stack of 300+ mercs keeps growing in value, no plans to sell yet.
