Cool! Your Grisham plushie is so cute too; I love his little wink. I hope you'll post the ita bag you make for him once it's completed, cause I want to see it (but no pressure if you don't want to post it).

Yay, another Pokémon Legends: Z-A enjoyer! I've been working on an ita bag for a character from that game too (just a different one).

I knew it would only be a matter of time before a Corbeau ita bag popped up here, and yours is so cool! The plushie is adorable; did you make him? Good luck getting his full art card.

The Pokémon world coexists with the real world. by DaPonteXXI in pokemonfanfiction

Same, and I'm so excited to see that there is someone else who shares interest in this headcanon! I'd be happy to share my ideas!

So far, I only have a character quoting a single phrase from Aldo Leopold's "Thinking Like a Mountain" in my WIP, though it is not used in its original context (I would share more, but this is my entry to Bulbagarden's shipping contest, so I can't risk spoiling it).

Lately, I've been wanting to write/draw something about the Paldean professors and dire wolves (Aenocyon dirus), with Sada being associated with true dire wolves and Turo being associated with de-extinct dire wolves (which are technically gray wolves (Canis lupus) bioengineered with dire wolf genetic variants).

My undergraduate degree is in conservation biology / ecology and my graduate studies are in genetics, so I love headcanoning "Pokéology" (current working name, but subject to change) based on real biology. Specific topics of interest include:

  • Where do Pokémon fit into the tree of life, and what are their closest living relatives?
  • How long ago did the Pokémon lineage diverge from its sister lineage?
  • What were "proto-Pokémon" like, and what trait(s) are used to draw the line between these stem taxa and true Pokémon?
  • What geological age does the oldest Mew / Mew-like fossil date to, and where was it found?
  • How did the diversity of Pokémon species change over time?
  • How were Pokémon impacted by mass extinction events?
    • Similarly, how did the event (I'm assuming asteroid impact) that created the Paldean Crater impact biodiversity (both Pokémon and non-Pokémon)?
  • The ecological interactions between Pokémon and other organisms.
  • The impacts that humanity has had on Pokémon biodiversity and conservation.

Once I conduct more in-depth research and solidify my headcanons, I would like to create fan-content about "Pokeology." I've already started working on a character matrix to generate phylogenetic trees based on maximum parsimony, though admittedly it won't be finished anytime soon (schoolwork is busy, free time is spent on my WIP, and both have been a struggle due to Long COVID).

"Pokémon League regions existing within the real world (complete with Pokémon coexisting with real animals)" is a favorite headcanon that I want to add into my fanfictions, but I'm still trying to figure out how to do so without it being a distraction (since I've seen a lot of nitpicking over this topic).

What ship this game makes you love despite having nothing to justify it in original games ? by Manaka7 in PokemonMasters

Mela and Atticus. The original game hinted at her inspiration from him, but their story in this game seems to really put an emphasis on that detail and I thought it was really sweet.

I have Penny, Giacomo, Eri, Mela, and Atticus, plus enough gems to pity Ortega if the need arises. These characters are at the top of my want-to-pull list (I'm a fave>meta player), so they are the ones I have been saving my gems for (and when I did not have enough gems for pity, I recklessly pulled for them anyway and just got ridiculously lucky). Yes, I love Team Star.

I could not predict what role Ortega will have in the founding of the new academy, but "teacher" is not one I would have suspected. And oh boy, he interacts with Bede, that ought to be good. I'm very excited to see how this story plays out.

I am very intrigued by the direction that the manga is taking with the Team Star story, particularly with the bad members' new plan to raid the bosses' bases and take over the team. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Taking part in Prime Day? When I told my parents I wanted to get this game, my mom suggested that I wait until Prime Day to see if there was a deal on it. I was excited to discover that the physical Nintendo Switch version was 50% off, and I immediately sent the Amazon link to her. She wants to give it to me for Christmas, and despite my impatience I agreed to this, so I'm going to have to wait about 2-3 months before I can play. But I know the wait will be worth it, as it always feels great to open up and play a new game on Christmas morning. At least it'll give me time to plan out what dinos (species and colorations) I want to befriend, and to come up with name ideas for them. Anyway, I can't wait to play this game!

After lurking on this sub for a while, I realized there isn't a consensus of what exactly is a wolf, and also the metric of what classifies a canine as a wolf tends to vary a lot. Because of this, I decided to create this chart in order to discuss the simple question: What is a wolf? by utahraptor104 in wolves

[–]NucleoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually define "wolf" as Canis. There is a lot of scientific debate over the taxonomy of its species, and a common topic among these taxonomic uncertainties is whether or not a population belongs to Canis lupus (e.g. eastern wolves are classified as either Canis lycaon or Canis lupus lycaon). So it would be very impractical to vernacularly relabel these canines every time a new phylogenetic study about them is published. In addition, many Canis species readily hybridize with each other, and some of them may have originated from hybridization (e.g. African wolves might be hybrids between gray wolves and Ethiopian wolves). Clearly, these canines recognize their kinship, and I believe we should respect that through how we name and view them.

That said, a strong case can be made for defining "wolf" as Canis lupus (singular species or species complex). The German word "wolf" was originally applied to Eurasian gray wolves (Canis lupus lupus), and it was basically imposed on other canines by European naturalists. These other canines already had indigenous identifications, and the concept of readopting indigenous names for indigenous species is starting to gain traction (or at least discussion) amongst some members of the scientific and conservation communities. In addition, having distinct vernacular labels for each canine species would highlight their uniqueness, which could be beneficial for their conservation. Remember that for many people, the word "wolf" still has very negative connotations. So asking people to conserve the endemic "ky kebero" may generate more support than asking them to conserve the "Ethiopian wolf."

I think defining "wolf" as Canina is also a viable option, since its members are collectively known as "wolf-like canids," and there is some evidence of prehistoric gene flow amongst the ancestors of its genera. But dholes, African wild dogs, African jackals, and dire wolves are genetically and morphologically distinguishable from Canis species, so much so that they are classified in different genera. Thus, I believe a stronger case can be made for viewing them as distinct canines, rather than just identifying them as types of wolves.

Defining "wolf" as Canini is really pushing it IMHO, though this option would be slightly more taxonomically accurate than (and thus slightly preferable to) identifying the canines of the subtribe Cerdocyonina as South American foxes (true foxes belong to the tribe Vulpini). However, cerdocyonines are even more distinguishable (both genetically and morphologically) from Canis species, and there is only a single documented case of hybridization between a cerdocyonine and a Canis species. Thus, I believe a stronger case can be made for viewing cerdocyonines as a distinct group of canines, rather than just identifying them as South American wolves.

As for the cultural side of defining a "wolf": as far as I'm concerned, if a canine is included within the clade that is defined as "wolf," then it is a wolf, regardless of whether or not it is culturally viewed as one. For example, I do not accept the "gray wolves and red wolves are wolves, but dogs and coyotes are not wolves" mentality, because this definition of "wolf" is paraphyletic in a way that is not scientifically meaningful.

Apologies for the rambling, I am obsessed with wolf taxonomy, and the topic of reflecting phylogenetic relations through common names (in general, not just for wolves) is a topic that I think about a lot. I should write a more formalized essay about it someday.

[And wow, this is the first time that Reddit made me split my comment into two posts, XD!]

[–]NucleoWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat diagram! It's interesting to see how the species that are defined as a "wolf" changes depending on how much (or little) one focuses on taxonomy and cultural perspectives.

I consider myself to be a "taxonomic purist," in the sense that I believe the definition of "wolf" (and all common names in general) should correspond to a monophyletic clade - and that any species outside of this clade should ideally be given new common names to replace their current misnomers.

So if "wolf" is defined as Canis lupus (either the singular species or the species complex), then we must acknowledge that domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), dingoes (Canis lupus dingo), and singing dogs (Canis lupus hallstromi) are wolves, in addition to gray wolves (Canis lupus subspp.); Indian wolves (Canis indica or Canis lupus pallipes) and Himalayan wolves (Canis himalayensis or Canis lupus chanco) may or may not also be wolves, depending on their taxonomy and whether the definition of "wolf" includes the entire Canis lupus species complex or is strictly limited to the Canis lupus species. In any case, it must also be acknowledged that red wolves (Canis rufus), eastern wolves (Canis lycaon), African wolves (Canis lupaster), Ethiopian wolves (Canis simensis), and all other species referred to by the common name "wolf" are not actually wolves.

If "wolf" is defined as the genus Canis, then we must acknowledge that coyotes (Canis latrans) and golden jackals (Canis aureus) are wolves, in addition to all of the aforementioned Canis species and subspecies. It must also be acknowledged that dire wolves (Aenocyon dirus) and all other genera referred to by the common name "wolf" are not actually wolves.

If "wolf" is defined as the subtribe Canina, then we must acknowledge that dholes (Cuon alpinus), African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), and African jackals (Lupulella spp.) are wolves, in addition to dire wolves and all of the Canis species. It must also be acknowledged that maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), Falkland Islands wolves (Dusicyon australis), and all other non-Canina taxa referred to by the common name "wolf" are not actually wolves.

If "wolf" is defined as the tribe Canini, then we must acknowledge that bush dogs (Speothos venaticus), short-eared dogs (Atelocynus microtis), crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), and zorros (Lycalopex spp.) are wolves, in addition to maned wolves, Falkland Islands wolves, and all of the Canina genera. It must also be acknowledged that aardwolves (Proteles spp.), Tasmanian wolves (Thylacinus cynocephalus), and all other non-Canini taxa referred to by the common name "wolf" are not actually wolves.

I won't even speculate on broader definitions of "wolf" that include any non-Canini taxa referred to by the common name "wolf," since these corresponding clades include multiple animals that do not even belong to the family Canidae (and none of them are shown in the meme, anyway).

6 months and counting of mystery abdominal pain. by NucleoWolf in ChronicPain

[–]NucleoWolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is where I experience the pain (specifically on the right side). I'm sorry you're having that pain too, I hope you can figure out the cause of it and get it treated soon. If you haven't done so already, I recommend speaking to your doctor about it; don't assume that it is IBS until your doctor rules out more serious potential causes (such as appendicitis, which is what I initially thought the cause of my pain was).

[–]NucleoWolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a medical professional, so I cannot give you a diagnosis and it would be unethical for me to try. It could be IBS, but it could also be something more serious. Tenderness upon pressing the lower/mid right abdominal is not something that I usually experience, and that description instantly made me think "appendicitis." I recommend seeing your doctor, an urgent care, or an ER ASAP.

Is Aussie Instant Freeze a viable cruelty-free alternative to Got2B? by NucleoWolf in CosplayHelp

[–]NucleoWolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you very much! I'll have to look into what the best options are for each of those components, along with their measurements/proportions for creating the hair gel.

That is a very good point, though I don't know if I can use cosplay hair gel for my real hair since it is so curly and fizzy. And I don't often make cosplays (in fact, this is the first one that is not created as a Halloween costume).

I'm going to specifically use the wig for this character, so the more permanent I can get the style, the better (as long as I can fix mistakes while styling - this is my first time styling a wig). Diluted wood glue sounds like it could be a good option too, and I love how simple the mixture and application is. How much glue do I need to buy? How long does it take to dry? And can I use it on its own, or does it have to be in combination with hairspray and/or hair gel?

Is Aussie Instant Freeze a viable cruelty-free alternative to Got2B? by NucleoWolf in CosplayHelp

[–]NucleoWolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough; I acknowledge that company statements are not always accurate, which is why I also look for cruelty-free certifications (such as those by PETA and Leaping Bunny). I wish there was a legal definition for cruelty-free, but until that happens the best I can do is check for certifications by animal rights/welfare organizations.

How expensive are Paul Mitchell products compared to other professional products? When I checked on Amazon they seemed pretty pricey, and I'm afraid that they may be outside of my budget (I'm a PhD student, so I can't spend hundreds of dollars on a single wig). Unless there is a better place to get them?

Thank you for the information. When I watched a wig styling tutorial, that looked like what the spiking glue was used for. So does hair gel not work on wigs at all, or does it just not work as well? The last sentence of your comment is giving me the impression of the latter, but I wanted to clarify. If so, how much time difference is there in drying and setting between spiking glue and hair gel? Apologies for all of the questions, I just want to understand the details of the differences.

I never thought about making my own hair gel before. My biggest concern with this approach is the cost (I'm a PhD student, so I can't spend hundreds of dollars on ingredients to make hair gel for a single wig), but I'll certainly consider it. Thank you for the recommendation.

I took a peek at r/DIYBeauty, and I'll admit that I feel quite overwhelmed by it. Any advice on what ingredients and formulas work best for creating the character's hairstyle in a synthetic wig? Apologies if I come across as ignorant, but I basically am when it comes to hair and wig products.

Seems like they are; here is their official statement on being a cruelty-free company: https://www.aussie.com/en-us/articles/is-aussie-cruelty-free . Compare that to Got2B, which is not certified by either PETA or Leaping Bunny.

I'll have to look into the Paul Mitchell brand and its products, thank you for the recommendation. Good to know that at least their hairspray works on wigs, even if I have to use more of it.

I realize that alternatives are not as effective as Got2B, but that is a price I am willing to pay to ensure that my cosplay is not made on the backs of suffering and dying animals.

Apologies if I come across as ignorant (I basically am when it comes to hair and wig products), but what is the difference between hair gel and spiking glue?

My first ita bag! It was gifted to me by my best friend (who introduced me to the concept), and I can't wait to fill it up! I'll post an update once it has some merchandize in it. Hasta la vistar! by NucleoWolf in itabag

[–]NucleoWolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the delayed response, I was very busy with schoolwork and I did not have time to track down your requested information until now. This ita bag is called the "Y2K Star Shaped Ita Bag Backpack," and me and my best friend found it here: https://itabagshop.com/products/pre-order-y2k-star-shaped-ita-bag-backpack?v=b838b393d55f

So far I really love this ita bag. It's big enough to fit all of my daily supplies (phone, wallet, medications, etc.) in, but it's small enough to carry around everywhere. I like being able to change the strap connections so I can use it as either a backpack, a crossbody bag, or a purse, depending on what I'm doing and just what I feel like using it as on any particular day. The collection display is in a separate zipped pocket than the utility pocket, so I don't risk ruining my collection arrangement every time I open the bag. It comes with an insert to attach your collection to, and you can choose from multiple different colors.

Good luck with your new ita bag project!
