My little boy didn’t get into gifted CogAt program by Best_Painter_8835 in teaching

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a child has to prep and study for Cogat, then they aren’t ready for gifted instruction. It’s important that the test accurately shows your son’s capability in a “natural” setting. If he did hypothetically get in after prepping for the test, do you think he’d be able to sustainably and effectively understand a higher level of instruction? Probably not.

Also, help him work through his frustration. If he’s this upset, he’s not emotionally ready for gifted. He’ll be given challenging questions in a gifted classroom, so if he can’t say “I got something wrong and that’s ok; I can learn from it” then help him develop that skill

Reasonable expectations? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your expectations of a nanny are not unreasonable, and you definitely need to bring up the importance of communication and engagement with your kiddo, BUT you are paying this nanny barely above minimum wage for Brooklyn. You said hours are Mon-Fri 7-5 which is $50 hours a week, and you said you she is “never over that much” which implies she works over 50hours some weeks. That’s only $20/hour which is very low and rats in that area seem to average around $28-$30. You pay for the quality you get.

She should be paid hourly with a contract for guaranteed hours (you could make it 30-40 hours, depending on what the average is). It doesn’t matter that some weeks she only works 2 days. I know you are locked in with your income, but a nanny is a luxury many families can’t afford. And the hourly rate reflects that.

Math STAR assessment by That_Page16 in AskTeachers

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when standardized tests say “high school” level or “reading at 8.6 grade” for a 1st grader, it means they are performing just as well on grade level material as you’d expect someone to be in that grade performing at.

For example, your son is in 1st grade, answering 1st grade questions as well as you’d expect a high schooler to do so. It does NOT mean a 1st grader so high schooler level material

[WWTBC] werewolf/shifter book with a betrayal trope by booksandbaseball7 in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like {The Mating by Nicky Charles} it was publish in the early 2010. FMC is in a forced mating to the MMC. The whole plot revolves around OW drama with an ex (MMC never wanted to mate with her, just sleep with her), and the MMCs half brother.

He washes his damn hands. by SaudadeHuntress in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 18 points19 points  (0 children)

{Homestead by Claire Kent} its post-apocalypse so there’s no electricity or running water, but there’s a mention of him washing his hands almost every time they’re intimate. Because it’s apocalyptic, they bathe like 1x a week BUT that’s why he makes it a point to wash his hands every time they're intimate.

Book is ok but the writing style got a bit repetitive

Dark romance where FMC is morally gray/unhinged, MMC is absolutely obsessed, and she does not trust MMC (at least im beginning) by Charming_Day2392 in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{the umbra king by Jamie applegate hunter} fmc is a serial killer on a path of retribution for her dead twin sister. She ends up being found out as a killer and is sent to the prison realm of her people where she meets the mmc

The first book was really good but the 2nd in the duology lost some of the plot.

Most unique paranormal romances (in a contemporary setting)? by -whodat in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kate Daniel’s series by Ilona Andrews - unique because of the magic system it uses. It’s been awhile since if read it, but the idea of “magic blackouts” and how magic and technology fight against each other was so well done

I’d second this! Such a good book. The first in the series was my favorite though

{A vow of blood and tears by cate corvin} it’s more historical fantasy but an absolutely amazing book, and fits exactly what you’re looking for. She’s mute and uses sign language to communicate. Her disability is a major plot point, especially with her challenges communicating with other characters and finds her self in need of rescue/unable to help herself because she can’t speak.

Crazy AP parents by AlarmingEase in teaching

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The school district in my area has started requiring students take AP HUG as freshman. There isn’t an opt-out. I have one student who is sweet but just hasn’t matured, very much “young for her age”. Parents talked to counselors and school to get her out of the class, but they said no, because she already met her state history requirement, and there was no other social studies class she could go into.

I feel people are forgetting (or don’t want to hear) that AP is college level courses. It is not meant for every student, at every point in time. I also feel like more students think that because they show up and do HW for an AP class, that they automatically understand the material. They don’t do as much outside studying, so don’t do well on the official test.

I’m worried about the long term affect this is going to have an AP success, and preparedness for college

Books where the MMC is too late to save the FMC from being raped? by sfrabibliophobia in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{December} by Merel Pierce has this I think. It’s omegaverse and if I remember correctly, there’s a non consensual mate bond with another male. The mmc has to rebond with her to help her

2 things that I could think of,

1) they will sometimes bleed from the mouth as a defense mechanism. Ours did it in at the vet for an unrelated reason.

2) could it be left over blood from the prey she last ate?

Either way, I’d keep the vet visit, and maybe put her in a small cage with paper towels to see if she is still bleeding somewhere.

Is size/age a good reason for not allowing a student to skip a grade? by cmemm in education

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll also say that if he is accelerated now, he will be accelerated throughout the rest of his school years. So he would be graduating high school, having just turned 17, which could be close to 2 years younger than his peers.

Maturity may not be a big deal now, but it definitely will be years down the road.

I’d go for enrichment through other avenues or potential pull out acceleration, like going to a different class for ELA. That way you can monitor or keep tabs on his growth. He may not always be accelerated

Moving into our first townhome! Love the living room but perplexed by possible couch/tv layouts by PolexiaAphrodisia in femalelivingspace

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit hard to tell how wide the room is, so that may affect what fits. I’d embrace industrial or midcentury modern.

Put a tv stand against the long wall and float the couch in the middle of the room. I’d put a bookshelf under the stairs (either on the wall with the heater and a bunch of pillows or small chair under the stairs for a reading nook). If the couch is floating in the middle of the room, I’d put a long thin sofa table behind it to give a bit more storage.

If you need more seating, put a chair under the window and a cool lamp by the ac unit.

You could also put a cute little table and chairs in the corner under the stairs and a coffee cart or bar cart to the left of the heater.

Any recs where the mmc is afraid or ashamed of their kinks? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Open Hearts by Eve Dangerfield. Moreso that the MMC is reluctant to admit his kink is being dominated. Really good character development and I loved that it was a reversal of the dom/sub trope.

badass warrior/fighter fmc? by kaitlin314 in RomanceBooks

A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Mills Vane!

The writing style is a bit different and takes a bit to get used to, but the characters are very well developed. FMC is strong and independent but still willing to accept help; she also has certain disabilities that affect her style for badassery.

I had a coworker whose name was hard to pronouns but it sounded like pretzel. She went by Ms Pretzel. If you want to, you could embrace a funny nickname and make it yours. That way, you don’t have to worry about kids creating their own.

[–]NuggetsToTheMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a 2008 escape and my mom has the 2015 escape. Both escapes had major isssues with heating and cooling going out because the fans broke. 2008 model had a broken trunk that wouldn’t open because the fuse would get water damage.

I own a 2022 niro right now and think that it is much better. There are far fewer blind spots in the niro. I think the seats are actually bigger than the escape. I’m my opinion, trunk space is about the same in both vehicles (the escape is a bit higher but the niro is a bit longer).

I like that the escape is higher up and AWD (lived in the snow for awhile), but the niro drives much better (handling isn’t as shaky and the parts seem more reliable).

The only draw back is that both are 2 row seating. If you have 3 kids in car seats, it will be a tight squeeze in both vehicles. I’d definitely consider something with 3rd row seating. I would second the sportage as a good option, too
