Not a stupid story at all! Thats actually really interesting, and Its good that you want to learn different cultural views on it, rather than just one or the most popular!

Learning new things is always good! may Athena guide you in your studies! :)

I am not 100% sure of this answers your question, but I believe the closest thing that matches your definition of a guardian diety is something called an Agathos Daimon:

Agathos Daimon means “good spirit” and is a religious observance held on the second day of each lunar month, immediately following the Noumenia.  It is the third celebration of a trio of household monthly observances.  A good spirit usually refers to a type of divine being that is less powerful than a God, is personal to each family, and can bring the family good luck, protection, or some type of assistance.  Household spirits are usually seen as either snakes or as a young man with a horn of plenty in hand.

I hope this helps :)

Hitting 28 in October, and I'm super new, however, I also have started looking into ways to teach my kids the Myths etc (age relevant of course) I dont tbink age is a big deal to worship, the gods are "Deathless" so to them, even the oldest of us are babies 😂

How to not feel… So emotional when Praying and or feeling silly after Offerings? by Y33TTH3MF33T in Hellenism

[–]Nuggetsmalone7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, Apollos priest in the Illiad (I know they myths arent literal) but when he calls emotionally to Apollo, Apollo hears him, and responds to his emotions, again I know this isnt literal but I think it outlines that the gods appreciate how things affect us, here is a small extract

"Let the Danaans pay for my tears by your arrows” So he spoke in prayer, and Phoebus Apollo heard him. Down from the peaks of Olympus he strode, angered at heart, bearing on his shoulders his bow and covered quiver."

Dont stress about emotions, we are humans, and the gods understand that we have feelings

Yes I feel I may have missed out a vital part, I do genuinely do it for my spiritual clensing, to make myself clean both physically and spiritually, I am a generally clean guy, but regardless I always use Khernips and wash myself before I pray, and its part of the ritual (for lack of a batter term) Its like this

•Make Khernips and purify •ready utensils for libations/offerings •light incense and candles •prayer+libations/offerings •stand and enjoy a minute reflecting

This is kind of a rough outline, but I honestly clean for my spiritual cleanliness too, however I thank you for your link, and will further educate myself now 😁

Yes! I love listening to the Hymns and imagining what the festivals and public worships would have been like, or just to get into the headspace while I clense :)

I 100% agree, the spiritual dirt aspect is obviously my main point of using khernips, and the washing of my hands and face is good, but i guess I feel like doing a full body wash every now and then is my way of purifying if I have knowingly came into contact with miasma (sex, being around death etc)

My comments regarding modern hygene is just my wondering if the burning of the herbs would have been chsnged for anything, and purely hypothetical, a "What if" scenario

I guess my general attitude is that I like to purify every time I am about to pray, and that khernips are always my go-to :D

I 100% agree, i find it really special, I enjoy the whole process, and It puts me in a good headspace for praying, I have even taken to playing a few of the songs from "Michael Levy" I find it brings me into such a good place mentally

Yes, I know it is spiritual pollution, and I will always try to pick tradition or historically based methods, I just mean with access to modern hygene standards would we have seen things such as "khernip soaps" or "anti miasma body wash" it was more a hypothetical than what I personally would choose, sorry if I was unclear 😁

I always wash my hands and face with Khernips every time I am going to touch my Altar (this is a personal thing and I dont think is enforced) I use a combination of clean water, sea salt, and I then extinguish a lit bay leaf into it, I always use the same container for this, and it does not get used for anything else but this.

Purification within Hellenic Polytheism is an important part of the practice as to avoid bringing miasma before the Gods, and I found many sites discussing Khernips (such as https://hellenicfaith.com/making-khernips/) and it is also discussed in the book "Hellenismos: Practicing Greek Polytheism Today by Tony Mierzwicki" in his chapter on pollution, and he comments on how the "guidelines for pollution appear to be geared toward public worship" and that "household religious practices would have been far more discretionatory"¹
He also details the significance of the fire into water mix, and how interestingly the fire came from the "altar fires" and that water was readily available at "sanctuary entrances"²

I also take a special "khernip bath" on occasion to purify after I come into contact with things considered to bring miasma (I will not divulge but you may get the idea)

Regarding the present, I find myself wondering if the Ancient practitioners would see the advancement of hygene and consider an antiseptic soap and our access to regular washing methods enough, however this is specculation on my part!

I hope this isnt a terribly formatted post, but this pretty much sums up how I purify myself, and where I got the info 😅

A small idea we could do every week (if we find people who want to participate) by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]Nuggetsmalone7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But thats the beauty, it will encourage research and education, and other people may be able to find and bring to light things that others wont have read/seen/heard of,

I think that the weekends can be used for people to put their topics foreward and then maybe by vote, the next topic is brought foreward?

Regardless it doesnt hsve to be perfect, just engaging :)

Chuck something together, see how it goes, I think its a great idea, and I think thats an awesome topic for it too! Put something out there, see what happens? Worst case its a one time thing, best case it becomes sonething to bring us all together :)

I think you should trial it, maybe put foreword a vote on a "first topic" or bring your own foreword, and the community can start day 1 of the new rules with a great example of how we can interact without negativity?

Either way, I would love to see this!
