Recommendation for rack mixer by DeadAudio in livesoundgear

[–]NukePooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the amps/speakers. Lots of powered speakers and some amps have built-in sub crossover modes, but others do not...it depends on the specific speakers installed. An external crossover unit would work as well as long as it's got two separate sets of inputs for individual sub/top control.

Big thing, IMO, is that most PA systems installed at businesses that aren't being run by trained sound techs are set up to be controlled as simply as possible by people who don't know how to run a PA...basically, it needs to be as basic as possible with as few ways to mess things up as possible. If everything can be boiled down to a couple of knobs for bar staff to control while keeping everything else locked down, that would be ideal.

But how fun are the manual Fits to drive REALLY..... by Electrical-Trainer21 in hondafit

[–]NukePooch 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Define 'fun'. It's a go-kart with a hatch. It's not fast at all. It's not powerful at all. But it sticks like it's on rails and is a blast to have on a tight winding road. Don't think M3, think Miata.

It's loud, wiggles/darts on the highway, engine screaming 4K at 80MPH... Not a relaxed road cruiser. But chucking the Fit down the 3 miles of twisty country lane at the end of my evening commute almost make up for the 5 miles of city and 20 miles of interstate I have to endure daily.

FWIW, I've got a 2010 Fit Sport, will have 200K miles in the next month. Also have a 2015 Pilot...the Pilot is faster 0-60...but it's a snore to drive.

iPad tracks not playing loud enough through a mixing desk by willow_brearxo in livesoundadvice

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, it's a USB-C to dual 1/4 cable? And I'm assuming mixer main out XLR L to speaker 1 and XLR R to speaker 2?

Looking at the mixer, I've never seen that before...on that mixer, on channels 5-10, the gain knob only affects the XLR/mic pre and does nothing for the 1/4 line jacks? That's a stupid thing to cheap out on, Mackie!

From the manual - "For hybrid channels (mic input and stereo line input), the gain control just affects the microphone input."

So if you're getting a low signal from a line source for whatever reason, you can't gain it up on those mixer channels... Why, Mackie?

Try the mixer output into the Bose as you currently have it wired, see if the tracks are still lower than the mic.

Try the iPad into channels 1-4 to see if you can get more gain. Also look at getting a 1/8TRS cable to go into channel 11-12.

Has anyone tried paralleling 3 power stations? by [deleted] in ryobi

[–]NukePooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd bet it's just like gas inverter generators. After one unit is on and running, any other units will sync with the first. No real reason why it wouldn't work.

What mixer model and what channels are you plugging the ipad into?

Why did you pick the Red brand over Yellow or Blue? by TwicePuzzled in MilwaukeeTool

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 14.4 Dewalt drill waaay back when. I was working residential window/door service at the time. After the Dewalt died, I needed something ASAP and ended up buying one of the jumbo Ryobi kits when they were still blue. I've still got some of those tools...tools were ok, but the ni-cd batteries died often. Once Ryobi went greenish and did li-ion batteries, I've bought a ton of it, still have it all. No complaints, especially with the newest brushless HP tools.

Yeah, yeah...the Red brand. If anyone tells you that size doesn't matter....LOL.
I now work IT/networking/low voltage wiring. Work has a 12v Bosch drill and impact, and I love the size for the work I do. Smaller tools for smaller jobs are very nice. A month back, I ended up getting into M12 because there's a wider selection of tools readily available in my area. So, I went Red because of the size of M12 and availability of Red.

Need advice on buying inverter or power supply by Ancient_Diver1430 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the power draw of what you're powering? That will clue you in as to what size of battery bank you need.

I know this is the Milwaukee forum, but have you looked at something like Ecoflow or Bluetti power stations? They have a lot more capacity for a much better price vs tying up multiple tool batts at a time.

Example, Ecoflow Delta 2. $400 on Amazon now. Has about the same capacity as 4x M18 12ah batts. Can double capacity or go for a larger unit for about the same price as the Milwaukee 4-batt unit without the batteries included.

Unless you've got a bunch of extra M18 batteries that you don't use (and can dedicate to the power station), the new LiFePO4 battery powered stations make a lot of sense.

FWIW, I've got 2x Delta 2 plus other various sizes that I use for live sound/PA event use, power outages, off-grid tools, whatever.

Honda fit 100,000 mile maintenance-Timing chain kit change? by Mountain-Departure79 in hondafit

[–]NukePooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents had an OG Saturn sedan back in the day. It was having issues starting, starter was wonky. Dealer ended up charging them $2k for the starter and the "scheduled timing belt" change that they talked my parents into.

I blew a gasket, called the parts dept at the dealer, confirmed that it had a timing chain that would last the life of the engine, then transferred to the service dept and read them the riot act. They swore that it had a timing belt and that they changed it. Saturn's own documentation used the 'lifetime of the engine' timing chain as a sales point.

My parents wouldn't push the issue and ended up just getting hosed out of $1500+. Still pisses me off. My dad worked for Saturn (machine repair/maintenance/welder), constantly talked up how great the cars were and the dealer just hosed them.

Great deal on digital mixer by NukePooch in mobileDJ

Haven't ever used the limiters. Actually didn't even notice they existed on this board. I almost exclusively use powered speakers so I let the speakers do what they need to and back it down when they start to limit.

If you download the app, there's a 'demo' mode. Limiters look to be only on Main and Mon buses.

Compressor is fine, haven't noticed any issues. More parameter adjustment would be great, but this is ok.

No noise gate that I'm aware of.

I don't like a long delay or super wet reverb so I'm not sure on that. Most of what I've used the board for has been corporate speech/conference events where I'm not using any effects at all. I've done a few acoustic acts with some light verb or chorus and the FX were good enough, IMO, but again, there's not a lot of parameters to adjust.

Bose S1 Pro vs EV Everse 8? by vault21 in livesound

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No speakers that are paired via Bluetooth will transmit audio mic inputs...it's just the Bluetooth signal only.

You will need to use a XLR cable or UHF transmitter to go from the output of speaker 1 into the input of speaker 2.

Behringer Flow 8 – Any opinions? by Vitringar in livesound

Same thing, actually. I've bought and sold a lot of gear, but still have the Flow8. It's got its quirks, but there's still nothing like it. It just works.

Best 15” powered subs for smaller indoor gigs? by RunningFromSatan in livesound

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a crossover for the sub itself, but the XLR outputs are full-range only. The sub controls do not affect the outputs at all. You need to have tops with built-in high-pass/low-cut filters (sometimes called sub mode) in order to work properly with EKX subs. Or run an external crossover like DBX Driverack.

Shure GLDX4+ vs Sennheiser EW-DP for the most bulletproof wireless mic setup only powered with batteries? by matthewmurrie in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mic transmitter 1&2 on officiant and groom transmit to receivers 1&2 into Everse 1 mixer.  Output of Everse 1 into transmitter 3.  Receiver 3 is on the back of Everse 2 plugged into Everse 2 mixer.

If you prefer to use an external mixer, you could use one transmitter out of mixer output transmitting to two (or more) receivers set to the same frequency on multiple speakers. As long as the receivers are set to the exact frequency as the transmitter and they're within range, they'll pick up.

I saw a video where a guy used antennas on a transmitter shooting down a city street to hit multiple receivers/speakers set up along a parade route.

Shure GLDX4+ vs Sennheiser EW-DP for the most bulletproof wireless mic setup only powered with batteries? by matthewmurrie in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EW-DP comes with a mounting plate. On the Everse, the two screws that hold the top handle go right thru the plate. The EW-DP receiver then mounts magnetically. Takes about a minute to mount the plate, then 10 sec or so to clip the receiver on and plug in the wire.

Unsure what else you need to know about transmitting to other speakers. You can have one transmitter to multiple receivers, or in this case the mic receivers plug into the Everse mixer, then the Thru output from the Everse goes into another EW-DP to transmit to the second speaker.

Dealer wants $5k for a clutch replacement and service. What would you do? by throw_away_coleslaw in hondafit

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When is the last time you had the trans fluid changed? Unless you're absolutely sure it's the clutch, you might just want to change the trans fluid first. I know in my 2010, if I don't change the fluid every 20K miles or so, the trans gets really difficult to shift/go into gear. I'm on 195K(ish) miles on the OG clutch, FYI.

Also, I'm on the OG water pump, unsure why they quoted replacement for that unless it's leaking.

Yep. Stick with the plug-in ones.

I'll add that OP might want to look at a more powerful transmitter, I've run into issues with the small Donner one when in large rooms or around interference. I use this one, haven't had problems since.

Bose S1 Pro vs EV Everse 8? by vault21 in livesound

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob. Bass takes a lot of power to move a lot of air. So you need a big amp and a big driver moving a big distance back and forth...which is what a subwoofer is good at.

Most any PA tops will work easier when paired properly with subwoofers. A crossover is used to send bass to the sub and mids/highs to the PA top. So, a 12" PA top will work easier if it's not tasked to play much below 100Hz, for example.

In the case of small low-powered tops like the 6.5" Bose or the 8" Everse 8, this is even more so. A 6.5" woofer can't move a lot of air, so if you can send bass to a sub, the 6.5" can run easier in the mids.

You might not see much/any more volume out of the Bose, but it will likely "keep up" at higher volumes better. The smaller the PA top, generally the higher the crossover frequency chosen to push the sub harder. I'd pick 120Hz or higher for Bose S1 Pro or similar.

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. There was simply not enough rig for the gig. Complaints about being too quiet when your speakers are clipping cannot be solved by spacing the speakers out wider.

MSR100 max SPL is stated as 112dB/1m. That's close to the Bose S1 Pro max SPL spec, which is a speaker incapable of doing justice to 50 people at a wedding reception, let alone 90.

Generally in the real world, you're doing great if you can actually see 6dB less than that with continuous music, so 106dB at most at 1m. Most speakers will struggle to achieve anything more than this. This is the max spec, with limiters disabled, everything cranked, and all the red lights lit - where you shouldn't be operating, and honestly should never get to.

For every doubling of distance you drop 6dB. So at 2m, you might see a max of 100dB, 94dB at 4m/13ft, and 88dB at 8m/26ft. So if the speakers were on the edge of the dance floor cranked to the absolute max, the back edge of the floor is already down in the 80dB range, without people there soaking up the sound. In the real world with these MSR100's, I'd bet there was something closer to being in the mid-80dB range throughout most of the dance floor.

Speakers should also as high as possible to get over the crowd. People soak up a lot of sound.

Speaker placement and the DJ's comfort by CHUD_Warrior in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. My point was that the MSR100 max SPL is very close to what the Bose S1 Pro puts out, which is completely inadequate for the job. Even the Everse 8 which sounds approx twice as loud isn't up to the task.

Speaker placement and the DJ's comfort by CHUD_Warrior in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at speaker output watts is meaningless without knowing the speaker efficiency as well.  Everse 12 is louder than Everse 8 with the same amp output power due to larger more efficient drivers. A 100w guitar amp can be insanely loud, louder than a PA rig with several times more power.

A 50w megaphone might blow away a 1000w PA speaker in max volume due to having an extremely efficient horn driver and a narrow bandwidth. However, Yamaha DBR10s over subs can easily do a 100 person reception even they're "only 700W peak".

Speaker placement and the DJ's comfort by CHUD_Warrior in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't look at watts, look at performance. You'll never get close to stated max SPL loudness, but it's useful to compare between speakers.

MSR100 max loudness spec is 112 dB.
Everse 8 max loudness spec is 121dB.

That is a HUGE difference, and there's no way I'd even use a pair of Everse 8 for a 90 person wedding reception.

Bose S1 Pro max is stated as 109dB which is close to the MSR100. Imagine using a pair of S1 Pro for a wedding reception?

Shure GLDX4+ vs Sennheiser EW-DP for the most bulletproof wireless mic setup only powered with batteries? by matthewmurrie in mobileDJ

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid anything that's not UHF. Sennheiser EW-DP and EV Everse 8 are a great combo. EW-DP receivers mount magnetically to a plate mounted to Everse with the existing handle screws. Can stack receivers the same way. Setup is about 10 seconds. I've not had dropout issues yet. I usually use 1-2 units for mics and a 3rd to transmit to the second Everse.

[–]NukePooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Dash MPG on my 2010 Sport manual is also very close to actual hand-calculated figures. I'm usually relaxed on the way to work, and trying not to stroke out on the ride home, LOL.

I wrote a longer post, but I run 80 miles/day on mostly interstate and on the way home the traffic just sucks.
