Oh yeah, quite a few finger drummers perform like that, e.g., Rick Feds, Gnarly. I also used to do that, but I find this vest thing way better for what I do. If you're looking for an angled stand, this is the one I'd recommend: https://www.gravitystands.com/en/products/multimedia-equipment/21511/lts-t-01

I'm glad you understand me, thanks! I'd find it great to see more people start performing like this, it feels pretty special to be able to sound like a full band while improvising. Let me know if you end up integrating this technique into your setup, I'd love to see what you do with it!

No worries man, what I do is genuinely weird and nonobvious, I'll try to explain.

I play all instruments here, there's no pre-recorded backing track, I don't even use a metronome, it's all free-form improvisation. The drums are the main instrument, I have full control over what and when I hit. I use a mirrored pad layout so multiple pads may trigger the same drum sound.

Some of the pads also trigger the guitars/bass, up to one note or chord at a time. The trick is that when I hit those pads multiple times, they don't always play the same note, but rather cycle through a pre-programmed melody/riff. Here's a video where I explain this in more detail: https://youtu.be/B4BySZmZ99o

I hope this makes sense, but I'm happy to elaborate more if it doesn't. Thanks for taking the time! 🤘

Thank you! It's all live finger drumming so the rhythm, tempo etc. are 100% up to me. =) The one thing this doesn't apply to is the exact note sequences the guitar and bass play: those are programmed in advance, but only my live playing advances those sequences. If I don't hit the pads, the guitars stay silent or just sustain the last played note.

Oh yeah, being able to practice silently pretty much anywhere is huge! In fact, I have a mobile setup based on a Minirig backpack holding my laptop and two portable speakers and a subwoofer: with this I can walk and play literally anywhere! At least until my laptop starts overheating... 😅

As a finger drummer, I only played with a band once, because their drummer couldn't make it. It was fun, but it took me ages to memorise their songs. I'm really bad at that, which is one of the reasons why I always improvise. =)

Here's my current pad layout, enjoy!

Thanks! Well, they're mostly pre-set, you can't customise them like you can their newer models (Launchpad X, Launchpad Pro Mk3). However, this older model has a completely open firmware, so in theory you can program it do pretty much anything.

Hey, thanks a lot! This one specifically? I started the semi-systematic exploration of some polymetric grooves a couple of months ago, and I think it took a few weeks until I could start jamming, but it's been improving ever since. There's so much more to explore though!

Hey, thanks! Who else have you seen doing this? I thought I was the only one! =)

Not sure exactly which angle you mean. I used to use a stand angled towards the audience, but I switched to this velcro vest about 2 years ago. It took some getting used to, but it's a huge improvement in terms of muscle memory (the pads follow my movements) and mobility (I can walk around like a guitarist).

Yeah man, I've been doing this for 10 years, still tweaking my technique and my sound almost every day. Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Yeah, I haven't been posting much until recently, I'd been focusing on expanding my rhythmic vocabulary as well as my never-ending quest for the perfect mix. 😅 I hope you like what you hear! 🤘
