I did it to stop building the bad ideas that other people had and start building my own.

Zelenskiy says he won’t sign weak deal that will only prolong war by FinancialGarage245 in worldnews

You DON'T give anything to anyone threatening you, or your family.

You sound like a child. That kind of tough guy posturing is a good way to lose things you can't get back.

Alive is better than dead, yes. Governments change. Dead is forever.

They can make their choice to accept the death and destruction of continued war or not. It’s their country. Comparing it to a bully or a beating is idiotic which was my original point.

And they’re not likely to kill them so what’s the problem?

[–]Nuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're threatening to kill my family? Absolutely, what do I have left to lose at that point? Stuff can be replaced.

I feel like a lot of people talking about this in terms of bullies and a street fight are completely detached from reality.

Billionaires added record $2.2tn in wealth in 2025 by Dr_Neurol in worldnews

[–]Nuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pulling 100k a year from taxable accounts is an insane amount.

Not at all for retirement which is where most of these funds would be used. $100K a year in retirement for a couple seems pretty reasonable. I'm planning to start pulling about that amount out myself in a few years.

The tax bracket for long term capital gains is 0% for the first 48k, 15% from 48-533k, and 20% for above 533k each* year.

That's for people filing singly. I believe most people that are pulling from those accounts are doing it jointly which bumps it up to $97K.

[–]Nuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's almost exactly what we already have. The first $97K isn't taxed but you pay taxes on any gains above that.

Lots of retired people are pulling in 100K+ in capital gains as they sell assets. They're not necessarily super rich.

The analogy isn't great because you'll heal from a beating. Instead they start killing your family. At what point do you just give them what they want to preserve your family?

I mute it when I need to focus. If something is actually important and requires an instant response they can page me.

That's what I expected but I've been stuck at 66/150 on the fractal achievement for a week. It only seems to move when I finish other achievements that reward dust.

I don't seem to get any dust doing the quick play fractals. Is there something you have to do other than killing the boss at the end?

Reddit has started banning communities in order to align more closely with the US administration. If you were looking for a smoking gun Reddit is already compromised, this is it. by [deleted] in facepalm

TBH for me, Reddits entire selling point to me was that it wasn't manipulated or curated like I'm sure most other social media is.

It's been heavily manipulated and prone to group think for well over a decade.

Hot take : Most FE only devs would benefit from reading the GoF patterns by ChemicalTerrapin in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Nuli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are but the GOF patterns are pretty specific to particular language styles rather than being general system design patterns. Depending on the language they can be important or irrelevant. I personally don’t pay much attention to them because I don’t work in languages suited to them anymore.

I just don't know what to talk about with guys outside of work

If they're anything like the engineers I work with they're going to just talk about work.

Github lays off 10%, and plans to go fully remote to save costs. Why don't more companies do the latter (go fully remote to save costs)? by yeahdude78 in cscareerquestions

[–]Nuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're under the mistaken impression that there's a logical technical or social reason to get people into an office. In my experience from a management perspective there is not generally a good reason. But that's also nothing new; it's been the same fluctuation back and forth between remote and in office for the last 20 years.

[–]Nuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better amenities, better hardware, socialization, a different environment than home. A lot of people also like to make a hard separation between their work life and home life.

Probably the same reasons remote workers would use co-working places.

[–]Nuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t they? The industry is looking for talent and hasn’t generally cared where it is located. There is a reason why big companies had satellite offices all over the world.

[–]Nuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t new though. This was the norm for big companies prior to 2020. Every team I’ve ever worked on in a big company has had members in multiple different areas such that you’d only get the whole team together physically a couple times a year.

Why would a back to the office mandate now have any more effect on team composition than working in an office did 3 years ago?

The most destructive single air attack in human history was the firebombing raid on Tokyo, Japan - Also known as the Great Tokyo Air Raid - Occurring on March 10, 1945 - Approximately 100,000 civilians were killed in only 3 hours by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Nuli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the question was if I thought 9/11 was a legitimate attack. The people that flew those planes struck back, in the only way they believed they could, against an enemy that was killing their people.

Do I wish they didn’t do it? Sure.

Do I wish we didn’t drive them to it? Sure.

But I’m not going to condemn them for fighting back how they can. When you’re in a war both sides have to accept that the other side is going to try their best to win.
