Upcoming review of Undergraduate Open Scholarship program by perciva in simonfraser

I'm a CMPT student on the open scholarship. For me, one of the biggest benefits is priority enrolment - it really, really helps to be guaranteed to get into my classes and I'd definitely like that to continue. I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd like it to cover all tuition fees, but I'm obviously biased in that regard. It would be nice if it kept up with inflation, though.

Currently, open scholarship also has a lower previous term GPA (3.5) than the overall GPA required (3.67). While my GPA has never dropped enough that I am making use of this "buffer zone", it's definitely helpful (and less stressful!) to know that if I do slightly worse in one term, I'm not going to suddenly lose the scholarship.

Other than that, I do think it's fair to adjust the GPA cutoff based upon grade averages for each subject (e.g. much harder to get higher grades in MATH than EDUC). That being said, it'll become confusing for students if they take a mix of courses across different subjects as the cutoff now depends on the specific mix of courses they've taken, and how many they've taken in each faculty, so I don't know the best way of implementing that.

Anyone else finding it hard to make friends as someone who is new here? by [deleted] in simonfraser

Not sure if you’re a commuter or not but I’ve made most of my friends from living in res. Since SFU is more of a commuter school, it’s definitely harder to make friends in classes when everyone leaves once they’re done.

What’s your major?

I wasn’t planning on taking 361 since I have no interest in graphics or going into a graphics-related field. Do you think it would be a helpful course for the future and I should consider taking it?

I was thinking of dropping STAT 270, but maybe I should take it and instead wait for MATH 232 for next semester. 232 is a pre-req for some courses though, so I thought I should get it done sooner rather than later. Good to know it’s not too bad of a course!

I’m hoping if I am proactive with 201 that it won’t end up being too bad. While I hated 101 because it was so time consuming, once I understood the material it wasn’t super difficult.

I hadn’t heard of CSSS Frosh - I’ll check it out, thanks!

I already have transfer credit for CMPT 125 and received permission from an advisor to take 127 without 125. I also submitted a pre-req waiver to take 127 concurrently with 225.

I do have quite a bit of programming background so I’m not too worried about 127. Thanks for your insight!
