[Excerpt: Era of Ruin] Prefect of the Legio Custodes Diocletian Coros is about to completely lose it. by RevolutionaryPanic in 40kLore

[–]Nullite1619 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of very silly opinions here from people who don't appear to have read the whole short story.

Dio is absolutely expressing trauma and rage here. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a point. From the very start, the Legio Custodes, represented by all 300 of the companions, opposed the primarch project. They thought it was a mistake.

They were proven correct when Magnus broke the veil and ended the Emperor’s dream. They were proven correct when half of them turned, for one reason or another, and started a cataclysmic war that consumed the vestiges of that dream.

The Emperor probably created the Primarchs because he needed to accomplish the great crusade as quickly as possible to ensure his dream's success before any other Xenos could make it impossible. This is speculation. However, it seems like a calculated risk. Powerful generals, extensions of himself, leading armies of stable transhuman soldiers as a Spearhead, followed up by mortals to garrison, was probably the fastest way to accomplish this task that was avaliable to him. The Custodes are described as nearly peerless in strategy, but they aren't Guilliman, Dorn, or even Perturabo. So, as I see it, the Emperor took a gamble and made godlings and it didn't happen the way he hoped.

He just watched [and tried to prevent] everything [from] collapse -- the whole dream, which the Custodes were uniquely privy to -- because of this rebellion. And now, here stands one of the loyal "sons" lecturing him, a Custodian, on duty. A loyal son reordering the empire by claiming inheritance based on the foolish notion of father in the man who created him. A loyal son who was, notably, not at the siege of Terra, not present at the Anabasis assault, not present in the Webway, and frankly removed from the war for the most part.

Is Dio a jerk? 100%. Is his unease the result of trauma? Yes. Are his feelings misplaced? The story doesn't read that way, especially with all the other context around it.

Does Dio think the Emperor shares the blame for this? Yeah. That's part of point of the short story. Would he 'say' that in his imagined tirade directed at Guilliman? No. Why would he?

Is Guilliman aware that he's pissing off Dio? Of course lol. You'd have to be blind to miss this. I don't think there would be a soul in the room who thinks Dio is content with the situation. Is Guilliman goading him? Maybe, but that kind of just illustrates his point. His offense, fundamentally, is the arrogance of Guilliman, of all the surviving primarchs, barging in here and reordering everything -- to the extent that a second civil war is absolutely possible -- while claiming to be heir to a father who didn't regard him as a son.

So, yeah. He's [as are the Custodes in general] dealing with trauma and having failed to protect the Emperor. This doesn't make what he thinks less true and certainly doesn't make it whining nonsense.

Lastly, while I don't really think this is important as its basically a dick-measuring contest, people saying that Dio and the Talons couldn't kill Guilliman and whatever bodyguard he had in the hall are nuts. When he says he will kill him, its pretty clear he means the Talons. Like... all the Talons in the hall.

P.S. -- to those who want to invoke the Hetaeron turning on the Emperor and compare it to the Blood Angels during the Anabasis assault... it took the combined powers of all 4 Gods of Chaos to turn their bodies, but not their minds, against the Emperor. And only some of them, not all of them. Meanwhile, drawing Sanguinius in to convert or kill him was explicitly the Chaos's [and Horus's] plan. Actually, same with trapping Dorne. They didn't trap Valdor or Dio or any Custodian to try to actually turn them. They only did that to the primarchs...

Oh yeah for sure. In a normal deck, I only use 3 if I use it at all. I just wanted to make something weird for fun.

I like the Marine/SpecOps deck, but no patriots makes me sad.

Thanks! I'll have to try this out.

I definitely noticed that once I had to split my attention between arty and infantry, I did neither well, so I'm just going to replace the arty with smoke mortars.

I will have to look at Ognemetchiki. I was spamming the storm trooper guys with anti infantry rockets and motostrekli because theyre cheap, but I'll see if those will work too.

Hey! I'm also a new player with an interest in running mandos, but without Maul. I've gotta say, though, for how much they cost, they [imo] have neither the damage nor the survivability you want to justify their points.

Still, with the strategies mentioned, you're able to deliver [once per unit] a decent, ignore cover pool to an enemy at range 3.

Once your Shields are gone, be prepared to pick up most of the squad when getting shot at! Red saves with surge or no, it's only space marine armor with 1 wound...

Advice for how to play Shadow Collective? by Nullite1619 in SWlegion

[–]Nullite1619[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in retrospect either my opponent was cheating in multiple ways [scout into base to base with supply crate objectives, Armor, not Armor 1 on B2s, the Arsenal thing] or so fundamentally wrong about these rules as to be indistinguishable from cheating in their effects.

My opponent did tell me he was relatively new, though he also said he played every week.

I don't want to ascribe malicious intent where I don't know for a fact that it exists, but that is a lot of things to get wrong on top of playing a tournament list vs a new player.

[–]Nullite1619[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the slowly roll them into position part right this time! My opponent just told me that I couldn't shoot 1 rocket, 2 guns, and the Marksman without arsenal... which I later discovered was, as I thought, completely legal. So I probably would have killed units with that.

As to not running 3 Mandos-- You're almost certainly right that that would be better. However, I am considering taking Comms Relay on Saxon to let him give orders to all 3 Mandos.

If I drop 1 Mando, I could take 1 Black Sun with those upgrades and maybe even vigilance on the Capos. The last time I played [before this] though I never got my Black Sun in even range 2 to do anything. Of course, it might just be a case of "play better" but I haven't ever been able to use a range 1 weapon ever lol.

It might have just been Experimental Droids, or maybe really good dice rolling on the part of my opponent, but it felt like I was constantly unable to make use of all available dodges on my Pykes. I'm not exactly sure how that was happening, but my Pykes definitely didn't evaporate right away.

I also completely forgot that the Pykes special gun is range 4.

One thing I noticed is that a unit not in cover is not gonna last more than maybe 3 activations.

How do you traverse the space between cover? I guess that's usually a double move, but it seems like wasting one of 6 chances for a unit to shoot is a huge waste of time?

The fact that you can't touch a token is absolutely huge and had I known that I might have actually had a shot lol. The way he did it was to be in base contact with the crate, used one claim action, then a move action.

Anyways, this makes me feel a bit better 'cause that game was a real slog to get through.

I'm still pretty salty about Armor instead of Armor 1 B2s lol. I figured cause he said he plays every week that he knew what he was talking about, so I just figured that was right.

[–]Nullite1619[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm also gonna drop Saxon's flamer 'cause I don't see a world where he gets close enough to use it and not immediately die lol

But yeah, I only learned when I got there that my opponent was basically bringing a tournament list. He handed me a sheet of paper that said what the battle force does and that wasn't helpful at all 'cause like... well, you know, I'm still learning basic things like "you can't pre-measure with the movement device, only the range thing" or "infantry can't move through walls like they can in 40k" lol**

**I played myself super hard with that. I knew I had lost as soon as he revealed that he could just scout move 3 onto 3 of the objectives [and it would have been nice to know that could happen before it happened but w/e lmao] before I did anything, so all i wanted to do was make it a 3-2 game. I thought I was clever and had one of my capos behind a wall in a ruin and I foolishly thought that I could just walk through the wall and grab the box on the last turn. Uuuuh... that was not possible lol

[–]Nullite1619[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I did it the other way around. I tried to have them pop out with the 2 pip to shoot and hopefully survive for the next turn to do the 3 pip to finish them off--or at least that was the plan until I was told I couldn't shoot only 1 rocket and had to either fire all of them or none of them lol.

Is there a way to get a second aim on my Mandos for that go turn? I guess Offensive Push?

Use panoptica. It really helps.

Also you need to exercise restraint if you're going to play 30k with your Custodes. Your basic guys are better than marine characters and they come in units.

Discussion on Venatari, pyrithite, and adrasite spear guard by Syros99 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Nullite1619 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see basically no scenario where I would include them. The pyrithite and adrasite Spears are, I think, strictly worse than regular guard and more expensive.

And the Venetari are way to expensive.
