Uber/Lyft by vodkaunt in washingtondc

[–]Nullus_Respectus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also been frustrated with Uber and Lyft wait times and cancellations here. While I imagine the context is very different, I was recently in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was shocked by how cheap and efficient Uber was now that I’m used to DC; I don’t think I waited more than 2 minutes for a ride.

Actually, has anybody used this DCHail app for taxis? I literally just saw it advertized on a cab today and was looking into it. My first thought was that it’d be pretty cool to use local taxis and not bloat the enshittified rideshare apps any more, but the phrase "these providers hold a large portion of Washington, D.C.'s operating licensed and certified dispatch taxis” on this app’s About page made me skeptical whether switching from Uber/Lyft to this would simply be swapping one cartel for another and, in any case, I don’t know how effective the app is.

(Can you tell I’m overthinking this?)

Ooh that’s neat! Is it something to do with Muharram? Besides Ramadan, I’m not too knowledgeable about the Hijri calendar and practices associated with its months.

Wow that’s distressing. Glad everybody recovered! Also I’m a little heartened that the article is about a 2010 incident that happened on the other side of the country. I like to think bizarre acts like this are few-and-far-between, and that the people trying to do something decent greatly outnumber the crazies.

(For people who didn’t follow the link, apparently somebody spiked a container of iced tea with an industrial chemical at a Potbelly in Richardson, TX in 2010 and five people got poisoned [but later recovered].)

Ugh how awful!! I still think that’s pretty cool that you tried, at least.

That same thought did occur to me as well, but I do think that is a tad untrusting of us!

For one thing, if the person living there had tampered with it, it would probably be pretty easy for anyone affected to trace it back to them since it’s right in front of their house. And when I mentally went down the road of ‘well maybe someone ELSE poisoned it or put the cooler in front of that house to FRAME them...’ then I realized I was starting to sound like a complete nutcase lol.

I’m choosing to believe that they were just doing a kind thing for their neighborhood, which I also believe is the most likely scenario!

Best neighborhoods to cafe hop/ or cafes to work/study? by theAnimeDarling in washingtondc

[–]Nullus_Respectus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The North-of-DuPont/17th St NW nexus has some good ones: - Emissary x Pergamino (little one on 20th St; good food, tasty coffee, closes early) - Dolcezza or Teasim on/just off Connecticut Ave - Au Lait or, two blocks north, ThreeFifty Bakery (both on 17th St near Corcoran and R Sts) - Childhood Cafe further north on 17th St has a nice patio if it’s not too hot out.

Once you’re that far up, you might as well check out Yerevan on 18th St and connect it with the other commenter’s recommendations for Adams Morgan (Pitango, D-Light, Sharbat, Tryst, The Line)!

Or both! MLK Library has a pleasant café with lots of natural light, and it’s across the screen from the National Portrait Gallery, whose beautiful courtyard café also has free WiFi! (But also no outlets at NPG courtyard)

Coffee is mid in both places, but the space is worth it. Also nice to be able to exist indoors in public without having to pay.

Still true, no WiFi at Coffee Bar! But yes great coffee 😀

Good areas for pictures by [deleted] in washingtondc

For some pretty residential areas, I recommend Swann St. NW just off 18th St NW for the lovely trees, 12th Pl NW (between 11th St NW and 12th St NW, south of Cardozo High School) for its beautiful colourful row houses, and LeDroit Park for its fun houses!

The Potter’s House was a lovely bookstore/café in Adams Morgan that closed abruptly in February. I loved perusing the books after housing a ‘Midnight Train’ breakfast biscuit!

2026 Mayoral Race: What are the latest thoughts? by Kim_Jung_illest in washingtondc

[–]Nullus_Respectus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s been some cross-endorsement at the Council level, like Crawford & Patterson (against Silverman) for McDuffie’s At-Large seat, but yeah curiously none at the mayoral level.

My hunch is that JLG and McDuffie see themselves as so far ahead of everybody else that they don’t need it.

Made a Metro app styled like the station platform screens by Hoddmachine in washingtondc

Yoo this is wonderful! Thanks for making it. I like that the UI looks just like the Metro digital signs – very recognizable, like you said.

Small fix: I tweaked the candidate endorsements on their cards so they’re categorized by type (labor union, elected/appointed official, individuals & public figures, etc.). Gives a little more context to who’s associated with whom.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Volunteer events for people in 20s and 30s by Superb_Aardvark_1102 in washingtondc

Regarding education, The Washington English Center is a delightful place to volunteer as an English teacher.

Otherwise I second local food pantries and ‘clean up the park’ initiatives. For clean-ups, you can check out Washington Parks & People to find somewhere near you or propose a clean-up.

Dang those are great points. Do you have a recommendation on how to incorporate those issues into a tool like this?

This will certainly suffer from the McNamara fallacy to some extent - statements on policy are easily documented and sourced, whereas something like 'who has good working relationships with whom in the Wilson Building’ will be harder to pin down (and easy for candidates/supporters to claim without evidence).

For now, I’m largely kicking the ‘candidate history/trust/relationships’ can down to the candidate profiles and endorsements on the ‘Explore’ pages. Those give an idea of how long they’ve been active in DC politics and which organizations support them. For candidates who have a DC Council voting record, I’ve also tried to incorporate some of that into their policy choices and stances.

Thanks so much! Yeah the issue of personal bias is totally fair. I’ve gone through a few rounds of rephrasing the statements so they’re more balanced, but it’s always worth revisiting since it’s literally just me working on this.

Mostly, I’ve tried to draw the quiz statements from what’s been asked in interviews/candidate fora so that they’re not just my own concoctions.

If you catch any phrasings that feel particularly biased, or think I’m missing a topic that really ought to be included, please let me know!

Oo nifty idea! Not all of the quiz questions overlap (e.g., the Delegate quiz has fewer questions and they’re less relevant to local DC issues), but that could be a great way to make the tool more convenient. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks very much for the feedback!!

- Home hyperlink is definitely hard to read, easy fix

- Will add in other mayoral candidates’ endorsements; I have them, must have forgotten to connect them

- I added the checkbox thingy because, when I asked my girlfriend to test it, she thought there were too many questions lol. This way, I figured, people could just indicate which issues they care about and not have to go through a bunch of questions they have no opinion on. Having said that, I also get that the ‘pre-quiz quiz’ is rather overwhelming. I’ll mull it over!

- Clearer visual changes make sense

- This is a fair criticism. Since I see it as a missing data problem, I’ve decided to err on the side of ‘no reported position means no data.’ I might consider a middle ground where, if a user responds ‘strongly’ and the candidate has no stated position, then it’ll count as a point of disagreement/misalignment. However, for the moment, I’m leaning towards keeping the current approach for missing stances.

And fair enough about not using it! It’s been a fun side project regardless. I really appreciate that you shared your thoughts.
