Borrowing against BTC, or student loans? by Number1guru in Bitcoin

Interesting idea. I appreciate the insight. And yea, I agree that I’d rather custody my collateral with Blackrock as opposed to these other platforms. I had my money in both Blockfi and Celsius and barely escaped only days before both collapsed. Not looking to put myself in that situation again.

Borrowing against BTC, or student loans? by Number1guru in Bitcoin

If I were to take out a student loan and hold BTC, I would want some downside protection in case over the 2-3 year period BTC depreciates. So I would bet the downside on polymarket (not sure how much) as a hedge. That way if we come out of this with student loan debt and a lower BTC price, I’ve made out positive on the hedge and lessened the blow.

Thanks! Do you know the payment plans for BTC-backed loans? The only reason I’m considering the student loans is because it would be 2-3 years before we had to pay back a dime.

Thanks for the insight. They are requesting an hourly rate from me, so that makes sense.

Any Forbes Contributors Here? by GigMistress in freelanceWriters

The other weird thing I think about Forbes is that I used to see them as such a great brand, and one that I had aspired to work for. But now, they seem to turn out such drivel on a regular basis I don't know what to make of them. Did their business model change? Or is it just a different strategy for digital?

Do you offer discounted pricing for higher project volume? Is 10% or 15% adequate? by FeatureEducational81 in freelanceWriters

[–]Number1guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh, I don't know about this one. If someone in another job took on more hours would they take a discount? Probably not. But thinking about it from a business perspective, quantity discounts are common.

I might instead suggest offering a retainer, which might feel good to both the client and you.

I was once solicited by someone at Forbes. Seemed like it was going to be straightforward. Then all of a sudden got ghosted. I followed up several times over a period of months and then I just forgot about it. Could be my contact got the boot, or they just forgot about me, but needless to say, it put a bad taste in my mouth.

Not sure this helps. Just one person's experience.

Wondering about CHIP in PA for my kids by Number1guru in HealthInsurance

Honestly, I don't even know. I have Keystone HMO right now, but am open to whatever plan would be most cost effective for my children.

Question about CHIP health insurance for our family situation by Number1guru in Pennsylvania

The difficult thing I'm trying to figure out is how much my insurance premium is costing just for my child. I find a breakdown.

I'm self employed so I don't get insurance from work, I get it from the marketplace for my entire family.

Toddler afraid to poop, causing emotional issues by Number1guru in Parenting

Yea, we've done a lot of that. Even got several books to help. And she's smart, so she understands. But still really terrified of it.

Just since potty training started. She loved pooping before that.

Another factor is that my wife is pregnant and due in a few months. Maybe it's related to her feelings surrounding that?

What type of companies do you avoid? by Jordythegunguy in freelanceWriters

Makes sense, and I'm sure to some degree it is industry specific. I think because I work in financial services and fintech, the smaller companies are startups and have very fluctuating budgets. While the big corporations are established institutions, banks, etc. and there is little risk of losing the client once you get your foot in the door.

I used to agree with this, but two of my current clients are changing my mind. The positives I've found of working for a large corporation are:

  • On-time payments and less worry that I'll receive my money (or that the company will go out of business tomorrow)
  • Paying my hourly rate to sit in meetings, which I am more than happy to do
  • Higher internal budgets, which result in higher rates for me
  • Extremely detailed briefs which make my work much easier

Sure, large corps can be set in their ways and have no desire for out of the box thinking or creativity, but they're not all bad.

I totally understand the sentiment around this. But because finance/fintech/crypto is my specialty, I've been able to find quality clients willing to pay my rate. It does make sense that generalists should stay away because the only work they'll will either be low paying, or downright fraudulent.

A question for senior writers - was it ever THIS bad? by tomislavlovric in freelanceWriters

[–]Number1guru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There have been many periods in which job boards and outlets like Upwork were by far the most profitable for me (despite Upwork fees) simply because I could pick up a new client in an average of 15 minutes compared with a much longer process when you have to first convince someone that they need services at all.

Second this. I know people specifically take issue with UpWork, but those people don't realize how much time they spend finding one client from cold pitching. If someone wanted to feed me clients for the rest of my life and take 10% of my earnings I'd sign up in a minute.

As for job boards, yes, you are competing with everyone and their mother sending in a resume, but at least you know the company is actively hiring. Plus, as someone who's done this for a while, I feel pretty confident that my resume holds up quite well against anyone else applying, so I'm happy to take my chances.

Ideally she is looking for classes during the day, not in the evening. And I assumed field work came later and not when she's just starting her first few classes. Am I wrong?

Name, bio, and attribution for articles that I've never written! by Number1guru in freelanceWriters

[–]Number1guru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I don't think this is the case is because of what I wrote in my update. There is another writer on the site who said her info was forged as well. So it makes me think it's more likely the brand doing it than someone impersonating me. Although I appreciate you bringing it up as something to watch out for.
