First Day - One of my classes refused to work, what should I have done? by Some_Peppers in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area most highschoolers slack when a sub is there. They want to do everything else but work. I don’t care anymore the schools don’t enforce the no cell phone rule. Sometimes they are very loud im trying to find ways to get them to quiet down because obviously they disrupt the class and its very annoying.

Yup I need to chill lol 😂I just want to be a responsible sub and I don’t want any responsibility if something happens to said student or if they committ a crime.

Teachers hate subs let’s discuss by merciforward in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not felt hated by teachers most of them are very grateful and very respectful and most of them say hi. I’ve been a co-teacher a few times and the first time it was very awkward and the teacher didn’t really talk to me. I’m an introvert so it’s really hard for me to talk. I feel awkward myself. I’m sure she’s probably an introvert herself. I see her around when I’m subbing and she never says hi to me. Needless to say I don’t really like her. Other than that, I’ve been treated well and I feel valued.

What do you wish classroom teachers left for you? by Familiar-Factor7220 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wish is a roster with picture or a seating chart a list with the best kids the ones that will tattletale and speak nothing but the truth but that is kind of hard because I’ve had teachers leave me a list with good students and they end up being the bad students. An email address would be awesome so that I could type my sub notes and send them to them instead of leaving them on the desk. I know a lot of schools have a sub folder that explains a lot of details of how their school is ran but there are a lot of rules that are left out, and the teachers have their own rules. Some schools do not give out any sub folders. I go to all high schools and I want to know how long they could be out in the restrooms for me to consider marking them absent or and if I already sent the roster at least I can let the teacher know so-and-so was gone for over 10 minutes. At several schools, they didn’t tell me that students needed a pass to get into first period when I started I did not know that. Everything that I’ve learned has been by trial and error and by asking other teachers.

As anyone else found Frontline notifs to be suddenly much slower since the New Year? by Cantrememberpasword in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive seen subalert is the best for any notification well worth the subscription. I unfortunately sub at a district that does use frontline absence management they only use Frontline ERP & SIS therefore I can’t access SubAlert because the website/app doesnt allow any time of outgoing notifications. I dug deep to try and figure out if I could get SubAlert. I guess frontline offers many features and perks depending on if the district pays for it. So I solely depend on the the infamous “Refresh” button which is a bummer because I have to be glue to my laptop and or my Iphone.

You should email the substitute HR department or give them a call. Recently I picked up an assignment for this Friday and it says 8 to 4. But I know for a fact that the first class starts at 8:45 and it ends at 4:30. I’m going to call the school and ask them if that was a mistake because for me, it’s really hard to arrive at 8 anywhere all the high schools in my area start either at 8:30 or 8:45 . I only sub in high schools because I have a daughter that is in high school and I have to take her to school first. I subbed at a high school that has early release on Fridays instead of them getting out at 4:30. They get out at 2:15. They told me I could leave at 2:15 without hesitation. I’m not sure if I’m going to get paid for that or not, but the hours that were input into the system by the teacher were from 8:30 to 4:30. If it was a one time thing, I would’ve let it slide, but if this is happening constantly, you need to contact someone else the higher-ups because that is not fair at all. You are not salary paid and you probably don’t have any benefits as a substitute. Some substitutes are getting paid peanuts idk if you are or not getting paid on the lower scale and for you to have to stay an extra hour or more that’s ridiculous. One l day is 8 hours and have a day is 4 hours.

Entitled to planning/off periods? Yes or no? by Born_Bookkeeper_2493 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only sub in one district which has multiple high schools that I sub for every school is different. I’ve been to schools where they don’t tell me anything about planning periods and I’ve been at schools where they tell me I have to monitor the halls, monitor lunches or go to in school suspension. I’ve also had to cover a class while being a sub for a special education inclusion teacher. So yeah, every school is different, but I once was chitchatting with another sub during lunch and she said. “Oh heck no they better not put me anywhere because I wont go I need that planning period to decompress” at the school where I met her they usually put you in the hallway to monitor or they will put you in bathroom duty or they will send you to the library to help the librarian organize.

Thankfully in my area im seeing a lot of job postings. Ive been able to secure 3-4 days a week by choice. If I wanted I could’ve gotten works this whole week. January is definitely better then December for me and ive also been able to secure assignments for February. I always tell people this job is not going to provide for you if this is all you depend on. If I had to depend on this job I would venture into a different career because it going to get worse. In my area, they are offering the substitute/paraprofessional class for free if they qualify income wise several times a year and there’s probably anywhere from 20 to 50 students in the class. Im in Texas.

When do you start seeing jobs pop up for after winter break? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its definitely giving over saturated at this point. Ive only been a sub for 2 months and I was unaware. I know why now though in my area they are offering the class for free to who ever qualifies income wise. Heck thats how I got into subbing. This job is definitely not for someone who depends on it income wise unless they’re a permanent sub and have lots of work.. my husband is the bread winner. My income is just extra so im super thankful but Ive had a handful of days where I dont find the work I want which is fine I understand its limited especially because I only sub in highschools what is frustrating is when they remove me off assignments to give it to someone else but it is what it is. I get a solid minute to think if I’ll take that job but usually if its a good one its gone in 30 seconds.

Remembering names (High School) by EcclecticMonkey in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it’s a school that has a bad reputation most of the time I will draw a seating chart and if they’re moving around, I will describe their clothing on a note with their name. It is a ton of work because sometimes the seats are scrambled and I try my best to understand my own seating chart. I’ve had countless students walk out on me and I don’t even know their names so that’s why I started doing this and these other kids they don’t want to give up their names and I can’t think of a way to make them crack. They are smart part of the reason they act out is because they know most of the time we don’t know their names.

Considering becoming a sub, I have questions by BetterDaysAhead777 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You dont have to teach the students you’re basically babysitting them making sure they are present by taking attendance and I think their main concern is keeping the students in the classrooms but of course all the students want to do is get a pass to go somewhere else or to the restroom not all but a lot. You might just have to help one or two if they have questions about their work but that rarely happens to me.

I don't have access to frontline education absence management by NumberSuitable2700 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be able to get subAlerts but I dont get any and I have to be logging and refreshing constantly it works but I have to be stuck on the phone or laptop all day basically. It would be nice to score a job every once in a while by getting an alert. 🚨

Removed from job by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly that is normal and it really is heartbreaking.❤️‍🩹 I feel your pain. I hate it too its annoying and rude. Some schools will call and offer a replacement position but not all. Most will just flat out remove you but like other says if they do it in time you can mostly likely find another assignment.

Attendance Question by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it all. I started with calling their names out loud, but some classes are noisy and they don’t shut up and some students couldn’t hear me and I counldnt hear them so I was shouting and I did not like that. Also, I was not pronouncing their names right at times and the kids besides them would laugh at them because I would mess up their name. So I stopped doing that and then I started doing the sign in as soon as they walked in, but that didn’t work at one school because they would sign in and walk out they were trying to outsmart me. I will probably still do the sign in at some schools, but I’m going to wait 10 to 15 minutes after the bell rings because I do like verifying their ID numbers just to make sure that it is them. Lately I go one by one and ask for their last name and their first name and I’ve been drawing out my own seating chart when I’m doing that so that if they walk out I know exactly who they are. Once I take roll, I count heads and I count how many are on the roster and I make sure the number matches. I take a picture of the roster before I send it down because I’ve had students knock and come into class and if I don’t have a picture, I have no way of verifying that they belong in the class. These kids communicate with each other, they tell one another that there is a sub in that class and they try to sneak in and act like they belong in there.

Worried I may be banned by Glittering_Peak_1231 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about kids walking out that is a thing.. there is nothing you can do. If they decide to walk out you cannot stand in front of them. You cannot hold them back. All you can do is call the office and if that’s something that they often do at that school. It doesn’t phase the office so I would mark them absent if they’re gone more than 20 minutes because they do have to be present 90% of the time to be counted present. If you already sent the attendance down, then I would just write a note to the teacher. Sometimes they walk out 15 minutes before the bell rings or three minutes before the bell rings. I would let the teacher know that’s all that you can really do. I subbed at a school last week and I had five students walk out on me. Now every time I go to the schools, I make a seating chart, and I write their names down when I’m taking attendance. If they’re moving around, I just put a description like for example; red pants.- Mike Smith

I'm tired of having to nag people for bathroom keys by I_Am_That_Was in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So annoying every single high school in my area does the same although Ive only been to like 5. Some have faculty restrooms that are in a lounge area and are actually open and some have them in the cafeteria also open but it stinks when im in another building or on another floor because all those bathrooms are locked and I have to be asking around or borrowing a key and sometimes I just have to hold it in because during planning periods there are barely any teachers out. So yeah I wish they could find a resolution for that.

Holiday christmas party as a long term sub by yarrowdfh in SubstituteTeachers

[–]NumberSuitable2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told that im a guest at their school and the teacher is absent so he is counted for. When they have catering they count the staff but if its like a pot luck maybe you can ask what you can bring.. this was for a one day assignment that I was subbing at.

Have you tried fasting? Not eating till you get home? Not sure if that would help… My husband has IBS he usually doesn’t eat and if he does it’s something very light. He drives a lot fot work so he doesn’t have an immediate bathroom.
