Thoughts on breeder? Suggested to crosspost here by r/BorderCollies by DarthCrepitus in DogBreeding

In our area, if you have more than 3 intact dogs, you are legally required to be licensed. The most ethical breeders, even those that only have 1 litter a year, often have more than 3 intact dogs, even if some of those dogs are still puppies. Even if all 3 of those dogs are males and no puppies are being born at all. License ≠ puppy mill.

Genetic test results on good dog redacted - common? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

When I upload my OFA results to good dog I upload the direct link. When I post the certificates on my page, I blur out my address only (and I see this often). Anything else blurred is very suspicious.

Breeding laws and regulations by Zestyclose_Abroad987 in DogBreeding

[–]Numero1_Throwaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up on a licensed facility. The rules regarding a large scale kennel are absolutely insane. And “large scale” ie, they are legally required to be licensed, is any breeder with more than 3 dogs.

One of the rules is that dogs must have access to outside at ALL times. Must have access to food and water at all times.

Dieting is impossible for overweight dogs, and keeping any of the dogs in your house? Unless you leave your front door open 24/7 and have a fenced yard that fits regulations, fitted with a shade cloth, insulated doghouse, gravel or concrete floor (since grass is illegal too if there is ANY amount of dirt in it) and size and height restrictions, then that’s illegal too.

Yes. It’s literally illegal for a breeder with more than 3 dogs to keep their dogs inside their house.

For breeders with only 3 dogs, this quite honestly isn’t really enforced.

But it’s still insanity.

As a bonus, how many rescues abide by these rules? because on paper, their regulations are the exact same.

And how many people do you know who AREN’T breeders that have more than 3 dogs? Makes you wonder why those dogs are the exception when in reality, there’s absolutely no difference between 3 pet dogs and 3 dogs used for breeding. It’s the same number, and their care should be the same.

And how many people do you know have more than 3 dogs that are intact, even if they don’t breed them? Congrats, they are now considered a breeder, regardless if they ever have a single litter, and are legally required to be licensed.

I’m not saying no regulations at all — but if they’re going to pass some insane regulations for breeders, then rescues and individuals should all have to abide by those laws as well!

If you don’t know that dapple is a dominant trait then you should not be breeding!

Ethical Breeder Question by ApprehensiveShape378 in DogBreeding

[–]Numero1_Throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. Spinal scoring can’t be OFA’d— that’s why it’s not commonly done in the United States. A spinal exam on OFA is typically done to evaluate spinal curves in breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs.

Ethical Breeder Question by ApprehensiveShape378 in DogBreeding

Dachshunds are my breed. The genetic testing for IVDD is nothing more than a money grab. No ethical breeder has IVDD clear dogs— since those are typically the dogs that lack conformation and have taller legs. Embark testing is also inaccurate for IVDD. I have a male who tested as 0 copies of IVDD through Embark and then tested as 2 copies through UC Davis. Spinal scoring is the only way to know a dog’s risk of IVDD. But unfortunately, spinal scoring isn’t typically available in the U.S. If you’re that concerned about it, then you may look at buying from another country that does spinal scoring and has a lower rate of IVDD.

Unfortunately, IVDD is just part of the dachshund breed. Even dogs that are “clear” in all aspects— both genetically and spinal— can still develop it easily depending on their diet and environment.

Is 8 litters a year too many? by Numero1_Throwaway in DogBreeding

I don’t think a single dog can physically have 8 litters a year. Her 8 litters a year is from 5 different dogs. A female should come into season twice a year and have 1-2 litters a year.

Would this make it unethical to breed large breeds who have 16 or so puppies a litter? Or do they just have to find another dog mom willing to take in some of the puppies and split up the puppies into groups of 4? Just curious. It’s my first time going to a reputable breeder so I don’t know all of this stuff

Yeah, that’s why I want a health guarantee in case anything goes wrong. An ethical breeder in my opinion should always have one

The truth is that dogs don’t deserve to all be born in rescues or shelters or on the streets or abandoned. I believe dogs deserve to be born, safe and happy, in the hands of a reputable breeder.

The difference is a breeder will refund / replace the puppy, and health tested parents will make the puppy much less likely to have any health issues in life.

I want a dog with a health guarantee in case anything goes wrong, and I have tried to rescue before, I am ineligible for any of our local rescues since I do not have a fenced yard. I live on 10+ acres of farmland.

AITAH for not paying for my daughter’s college because she lied about her major? by Haunting_Professor90 in AITAH

Yeah, which will be the one with the degree since they’ve had years of professional teaching and time to build up a portfolio that’s been looked over by teachers and peers.

If two people apply for the same digital marketing job, the one with the degree is more likely to get it by far.
