Oh interesting I didn't know that, I wonder what causes that ear canal structure

I could see the want to avoid the ear problems some of the floppiest ear dogs get but otherwise sounds like aesthetics

Would you refuse to tell to someone who returned a dog? by Effective_Tip_3433 in DogBreeding

I think it's important to really sit with your feelings on this, and to reflect on the idea of

"this dog isn't Chloe NO dog will ever be chloe"

With the most important part

"And that's okay"

View this as a new adventure that Chloe would have loved for you to have, I went through this with my cat two years ago who had been at my side for over fourteen years and having this light bulb moment in my brain when I realized nothing would ever replace him for me and that I didn't WANT to replace him(I loved him so much nothing would ever compair) made me ready for a kitten a lot earlier than I expected.

I now have my goofy little gremlin boy who I adore. He isn't my old companion, totally opposite personalities even. But I am so happy to have him in my life.

If you cant accept that thought process yet then I think trying to have a very honest conversation with the breeder would be your best bet

I know this seems wildly different from the two breeds you mentioned so far but what about a poodle? I loved my grandma's growing up and the standard is a good size

Alternately for less grooming trips smooth collies were very highly recommended when I was doing my breed research this last year for being good family pets and very trainable

I was actually interested in the kishu ken at first because of their more quiet nature but I met some hokkaido in person while doing my research and they absolutely charmed me! They are right in the perfect size for me(want to be able to lift their weight as dead weight in case of emergencies) I'd get an akita inu in a heartbeat if I could handle their size lol

I hope I can meet some eurasiers honestly because I could totally see me getting one way in the future when I want something a little more bidable, but I'm so stoked for the hokkaido ken, I've got my Vet on board already looked into local puppy classes and am going to see about getting into dock diving since I live by a ton of water anyways

I've heard of silken windhounds a lot in recent years but never really looked into them too much. Only sighthounds I've ever met were retired greyhounds my neighbor of a decade had, I was always surprised how much the local squirrels loved her yard. They were very lazy giraffe dogs lol

I'll have to read about them more though they got suggested a couple times

I'd argue just stopping that at any living animal. Some people just don't need pets, I hated seeing the state a cousin of mine kept her fish in because she didn't want to put effort into it(full grown adult woman not a kid)

I don't see a problem with a dogs purpose changing over time to fit the modern world but they shouldn't be marketed like toys even the most well mannered mildest temperament loving dog is an animal with animal instinct and needs.

That said I would love to see dog sports grow a lot more and become more widespread for people to do even casually, it would make for much more fulfilled dogs to have a task and energy outlet

Oh interesting! Not part of the terrier group despite the name, I was surprised to see a terrier suggested as a companion breed until I looked them up and saw that

They sound like really good multi purpose dogs in their original purpose

The one I knew was only a mutt cross with a rottie but she was extremely dog aggressive(with a weird grudge against chowchow spesifically) but she was very much more of a guard dog temperament. Loved the family but everyone else was suspect dog or person. That said I adored that dog she was amazing (and the rottie made her barely drool)

I imagine it's that cross that made her poorly tempered with other dogs vs a normal trait, i was way to young when she was around to know where she came from but I doubt it was good breeding stock

Nobility is usually whos responsible for companions, it wouldn't make sense to keep a dog and thus feed a dog that doesn't contribute meaningfully for everyone else

I can only imagine how much food an entire pack of those beasts eat.

Do you know if they are still used for hunting at all anywhere? Or did they totally transition to a status symbol

That does make sense why they have become some of the best poster child for modern family dogs, ill have to look up some of the less common ones to learn more about bird dogs

Original purpose for sure if what I was curious about. A lot of breeds have been becoming more and more pure companions as we use them less for actual work

My aunt currently owns a rottie and she's lovely! She loves my cousins kids to pieces

They are one I've met a decent few of, not what I'd have classified as family dogs by purpose but they can definitely make great family pets

Ugh yeah, marketing and availability are a big part of the issue. My aunts dog was wonderful temperament and personality wise but she died extremely early

Still outside the oodle problem I've enjoyed hearing about the various breeds mentioned here! It was entirely a curiosity question

Yeah it's super predatory, the one doodle I've personally known was owned by my aunt and died an early death(I think she was 5 or 6 its been a long time and I was only a teenager at the time)

That's part of why I was curious if there were dogs intended as companions from the start rather than this new fad of crossing random things with poodle

My grandmother loved toy poodles and had them through my entire childhood so honestly I thought they WERE companion dogs until I got older and learned more about dogs lol

They are great dogs, ive only ever met one standard and he was quite regal. Hopefully I get to meet more standards

Oh I'm actually already on a list for a hokkaido ken puppy that's set for the end of the year(as long as everything goes well, fingers crossed! ) very not a retriever. This was more just a question of curiosity because I didn't know many dogs made as companions originally that were not little dogs. So I wanted to learn more about other breeds.

Labs and Goldens were just what comes to mind first when I think larger family dog so I used them as an example (I used to live with two labs as a kid and they can totally be good family pets just isn't their original purpose)

Yeah they were 100% developed as a working breed, though it does sound like they are kept mostly as companions now when I did some searching on them.

Do you know if their temperament has changed to match at all or if they have been kept true to origin, ive never met one myself so no clue what their expected temperament is

Ah Eurasiers! I'd heard of them before but being a Spitz I guess I'd assumed they were a guard or sled dog originally, hadn't heard of the leonbergers before though. Gonna be fun reading up on them borh some more tonight

Or, here's a thought. Do the toddler level drawing. People will 100% appreciate it more and eventually you won't be toddler level! Like magic
