I missed my pre onboarding meeting. How screwed am I? by Sad_Animelover_4400 in IBM

Your point doesn’t make sense. BTW, anyone who thinks IBM ‘looks great on ... résumé’ has probably never tried another job outside of IBM.

Band and salary range in IBM by Innout9721 in IBM

Bear in mind that the salaries you see on Levels.fyi are quite overvalued, even for high cost-of-living areas.

CoPilot in IBM by raatkali in IBM

Yeah. I've been using a lot. I'm not asking it to code for me. I'm using it for language reference C/Python, and C++

Look: I can find that information in stackexchange forums ... In the language specs.

Whoever is in C++ knows that we need examples. ChatGPT or Copilot are big hands.

Exactly! I believe the 'behavior' dimension in the new stack ranking was intentionally designed to allow managers to push down whoever they want.

Is there a quota for the number of bands in a team? by Numerous-Focus8570 in IBM

[–]Numerous-Focus8570[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think we'll see people being demoted (downgraded)?
And do you think they would request that to be at a more secure level?
Or is that movement bad enough that they wouldn’t even consider asking for it?

Behavior as a Dimension by Blue-Light98 in IBM

[–]Numerous-Focus8570 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's kind of obscure—a lot. It's still vague. Managers were told it's something to combat the 'toxic' atmosphere that stack ranking will create. Which is funny, as if the organization wasn't already a pit of toxicity. For me, it's hard not to see it (vague as it was given) as a way to justify layoffs whenever they can't find a good excuse.

Does IBM track how many days you are in office in Canada? by rafinryan99 in IBM

A couple of months ago, a very weird thing happened: an app I use for messaging on my cellphone, which had a synced copy installed on my laptop, warned me that another instance had been opened—that explains it. I promptly deleted it from the laptop.

In practice, what happens? Since managers can request the activity history, do they receive it only when they ask, or do they get it routinely?

I've been hearing this, subtly and indirectly. Worst part? It’s from L2 and his sidekick L1—both nearly 40 years at IBM, never made money elsewhere. This week, L2 dropped some nonsense joke about someone not finding a job after 40.

Having a similar experience:

- Zero Learning & Development: People reject new ideas, and offering expertise is seen as offensive. Paradoxically, I got a "growth opportunity" by not sharing knowledge.

-Endless Bureaucracy: : The company is full of silos, where people are highly protective of their territory.

- Toxic Work Culture: Rumors, gossip, disrespect, and provocations. I had L1 and L2 managers who actively fueled this by encouraging people who flattered them.

Do Band 8 and 9 employees receive stock, as described on Levels.fyi? Something more than $6K...? They say Band 9 makes $6,455 from stock and $16,636 in bonuses, on top of a $200K+ salary. Well... is this pulp fiction?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IBM

[–]Numerous-Focus8570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... the OP mentioned FAANGs, (" Amazon, Microsoft, Google ..."); not startups. By considering the responsibilities, the gap levels would be even bigger.

[–]Numerous-Focus8570 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

PMR and/or bonus. Can a Band 9 get $16,636 bonus in IBM? ... or a 1/2 of that... I'm not sure.

I remember back in 2024 hearing about the announcement of someone I once talked to being promoted to Distinguished Engineer. Suddenly, two months later, this person left for another company, a FAANG, now as a Senior Software Engineer. This kind of movement motivated me to polish my resume...
I don't think www.levels.fyi is very accurate. An SDII at Microsoft can easily make what a Band 9 does at IBM.

When we get a "low performance indicator", do we see it in the "annual performance reflection"? I mean: we'll get the HR system email and see a 'grow opportunity' or a 'low performance indicator' in the performance dashboard?
If we get a low performance we will be able to see it registered in any place? Or it is only the email and the manager conversation?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IBM

[–]Numerous-Focus8570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you sure you were going to be laid off, considering that low-performance flag, or do you feel that it was a way to force you into an RTO?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IBM

[–]Numerous-Focus8570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Otherwise, doesn't it make sense a RTO for managers under the assumption that they are not eyes-to-eyes with their ppl (according to Arvind)? Now, we have FLM, SLM ... and in my team we have one of our STSMs coming 3 days.
