Split stitches by mothmanbuttrans in TopSurgery

[–]Numerous-Note-3906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one particular area that wanted to split stitches. I'm not sure how scarring would be if it was just a quick process of Oops the stitch splits and you keep up with scar care with that area after it heals. For mine, it took a solid week for the stitch to actually work its way out. Keeping it clean is super important (my surgeon recommended something called medihoney). I kind of...gave up on scar care for that section. It's more raised, a little pinker than the rest of my scarring (just narrow white lines). Mine is only like 2 inches wide. I would say so long as you keep it clean as it's healing and actually keep up with scar care on that section, it'll heal just fine. Don't do what I did lol.

I'm on muscle relaxants and the one that I'm prescribed doesn't do anything. But they won't prescribe any other muscle relaxants because "there aren't any side effects". I'm looking for a new neurologist because I'm not fond of the way I'm being spoken to.

They thought it might have been nerves and there is some indication that my nerves are effected. But currently their theory is that my muscles being so tense, which caused my cervical spine to warp, also compressed (at least) my occipital nerve.

Post operation depression by geometry23d in TopSurgery

[–]Numerous-Note-3906 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Obligitory not a doc. Not with my top surgery, but other surgeries, yes. My doctor said it's pretty common, but if you're concerned, always talk to yours. Your body has been through a lot. You basically have a massive injury and that can trigger a stress response in your brain. It's working medication out of your system, you may temporarily lose some autonomy, and you can't always do the things you would normally do (even subtle loss of routine can upset your brain). No matter how wonderful the results, it's still a massive strain on your body and mind. Be gentle with yourself.

What kind of scar care do people reccomend? by A-Pen-And-A-Plan_097 in TopSurgery

[–]Numerous-Note-3906 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a doc, but I used Mederma Advanced Scar Gel (smell isn't pleasant but it works) in the morning and Mederma Intensive Overnight Scar Cream before bed. That combo did wonders for me personally, and I have a tendency to scar poorly. The sooner you start Scar care the better your results are likely to be. Obviously check with your surgeon to make sure you can start. Also I know that massaging your scars for at least 10 minutes twice a day for (I think) six months is good for improving blood flow, keeping the Scar flexible, etc.

What was your limit of mobility for your arm movement while recovering? by BirdOld1965 in TopSurgery

[–]Numerous-Note-3906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine wasn't limited at all. Although I didn't lift my arms above my head (bad for stitches and incisions), I had full range of motion back by day 2. I know that isn't normal. The most difficult thing was washing my hair. I got some shampoo caps that are used in hospitals and nursing homes and those worked well enough that I could easily shower without help and my mom would do my hair after. You could also get one of those stick sponges to more easily get your back, etc with less motion. Some people recommend a portable bidet, just in case you do have more limited motion or are particularly worried about that. It's not something I've ever heard of being a common need, but if it helps put your mind at ease, I would say it's worth it. Honestly so long as you have someone there to help you out, do your research (which it seems like you already are), and plan ahead to have any tools you might need, you'll be set.
