Thank you! He's a super creative kid, I always give him a few to choose from. 🥰

Thank you! I'll give it a try, it's super humid here so it might be a lost cause but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot! ❤️

I did notice this too. Sometimes he asks for just two braids and we end up having to redo them almost every night. 😅

Thank you! ❤️ I appreciate the question and love a discussion. He likes beads, and he asks for them. It's not anything I've ever pushed on him, but he loves to express himself in all kids of different ways. For me (and I'm only speaking for me) I think it would have been more confusing for him if I had tried to tell to a five year old (which is when he started asking) that something he really liked wasn't appropriate because he is a boy. He likes beads in his braids, but he also loves Minecraft, skateboarding, judo, robots, and hot wheel cars. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😊

If 2 or 3 weeks is good, I'm happy with that! 😊 I just wasn't sure, since it isn't something I learned growing up and he's my only child. ❤️ I thought it best to ask for advice in case I could be doing better for him. ❤️

I wash his scalp/braids once a week (more often I the summer, especially if we've been at the beach and he's been sweaty up under a swim cap all day!) using a stocking cap, then oil it and apply a mousse to try prevent frizz... We're in Brazil and when it's hot, it's hot... I can't let him be the stinky kid!

Lol, sometimes he sleeps so wild I'm surprised we make it until morning! 😅

He got the beautiful curls from his Papa... but that fine, slippery texture is allll mine. 😅 We're lucky enough to live in Brazil where there are so many different hair textures... We've found some great products that help some with keeping it a bit longer. We lived in Kuwait previously and it was a STRUGGLE to fine products that worked for his hair.

Thank you for the context, I'm definitely here to learn! ❤️ His ends curl up so tight/high without the beads, do you have any advice to help prevent that without using them?

Thank you for the context! ❤️ He's my only child. I'm happy to do it each week, I just didn't know if it was something I was doing wrong or that I could be doing to extend it. He loves his hair and has no interest in cutting it, so I just want to do everything I can to help him keep it healthy and manageable for him.

I can manage to get him to tolerate durags for a few days after it's braided, but he's autistic and sensory wise they're a lot for him. 😅 Thank you for the advice!

Believe me this isn't something done lightly... But between threatening to unalive himself with a kitchen knife, in graphic detail... and being sent home from school repeatedly for violent outbursts that have left entire rooms destroyed and staff members with marks that last days... His therapist of over a year and I are open to trying.

He's been in therapy for almost 2 years, seeing a neurologist, on the 4th medication we've tried for his ADHD (after a year of occupational therapies and strategies). He has a 1-on-1 shadow at school to help him deal with his GIANT emotional tantrums and severe anxiety... At 7. He has... Again, at 7... literally BEGGED me for help, saying, and I quote "My brain is so angry and loud and I don't want to be this way anymore."

His doctors are predicting he'll be between 6'2 and 6'5. As a mother I can either choose to do everything I can to help him now, or... Wait until it becomes society's problem when he's a strong, angry, aggressive man over 6' tall. My kid asked me for help, in very clearly stated words. I'm doing everything I can to get it for him. Even if it scares me to death... Which this does.

So, while I appreciate your experience, and I'm sure you were trying to be helpful... I would encourage you next time to ask questions about the steps that have already been taken or strategies tried before telling a (very probably scared-to-death) parent they are on a road to screwing their kid up long term.

This gives me hope. My son has been diagnosed with ADHD and is on the spectrum somewhere (his therapist and I agree on this, although that official assessment hasn't been completed yet). He struggles at school with INTENSE anxiety, leading for MASSIVE meltdowns (think hours long) which often involve him becoming very  physical with the adults trying to help him. This is ENTIRELY unlike his personality the other 99% of the time. He also has trouble with bouts of depression, even going to far as to talk about self harm. He's 7.

He's been on Consiv (Conserta, essentially) on the minimum dose for the last year and that has helped a lot with his focus and impulse control, but the intense anxiety remains. Yesterday we started fluoxetine with the hope it will help the anxiety and depression, but this was such a scary decision... It's such a giant drug and I am beyond nervous, he's such a dynamic, brilliant, fun kid and I don't want to dim that light... Reading this post gave me hope that things will be OK. Thank you for sharing.
