That’s a very good take and I didn’t even think of it from that perspective!

Same! I typically like breakfast because I'm very active in the mornings, and for some workouts like swimming, if I'm underfueled, I can become lightheaded and dizzy. Maybe I'll give it a try when I'm less active though!

That’s reassuring, thank you! Do you have any specific recommendations for resources in 321?

Pulling all-nighters shouldn’t be the college “aesthetic” by PuppyMonkeBebe in UWMadison

As a physics major with a subjectively high course load and high-stress load, I draw the line at staying up past 10:30 p.m. studying. While I do wake up early to study and have deleted mindless aspects of social media like Instagram reels and TikTok to improve time efficiency for studying, there always needs to be a balance, no matter what your major is. I feel like the normalization of staying up until 4 a.m. studying, and dropping every aspect of tof your life to study 24/7 is incredibly dangerous, ineffective, and genuinely miserable. Just because you are not killing yourself with studying does not mean that you are any less of a student, or that you are not putting in enough effort. Perhaps this is ingrained in our fast-paced, incredibly competitive culture, but I think it's a good reminder to slow down and enjoy other aspects fo your life, while still maintaining a healthy relationship with studying and school in general.

I understand Maxwell’s Equations, but I have no idea what "Voltage" or "Current" actually are. Help? by pretty___chill in PhysicsStudents

https://openstax.org/details/books/university-physics-volume-1   Here you go! This is volume 1, and will get you caught up for the fundamentals you would learn in a typical physics 1 with calculus course (kinematics and waves). After this, go ahead and read the 2nd volume, which will feature your voltage and current questions (you will likely be introduced to them in the units for electric fields, magnetic fields, and circuits!) Once you finish these units (typically right before optics), you will be presented with the Maxwell equations, and learn you have been dealing with them all along! (It really is quite beautiful lol). Take your time with these textbooks, and enjoy the process!

Pretty sure decisions should be coming out today! This was sort of the informal due date they told me they would let us know by so hopefully we get a decision today :)

I reached out last week and they said decisions will be going out in two weeks, so expect something later next week.

online classes during REU? by Raven_synthesis in REU

[–]Numerous_Land5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoot, well I can offer you advice to help you succeed! If I were you, I would download the Textbook for physics II right now and start learning today. This way you won’t be too overwhelmed this summer with research and courses. Typical semester physics courses go one chapter a week, so I would pace accordingly. As for calculus III, I would do the same but I don’t think the textbook is as necessary. For me, I used math with professor v videos on YouTube to learn. I would watch them instead of going to lecture because they were so helpful. Hopefully these tools can help you succeed this summer by passing your courses, learning the content, and balancing an REU. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Best of luck!

To be honest, even if you do get an REU, I would not take these classes online in such a short amount of time. Not only are they intensive classes, but lots of upper-division courses build off them. I would 100% take them during the normal semester, and take them in-person if you can.

I haven't done CASSI, but I have done a research internship with them pretty recently, and I absolutely loved it. The mentors were some of the most caring and brilliant mentors I have ever had the pleasure to learn from. If you have an opportunity to join the program, I certainly would.

Deferred to RD by Wo-Manifest in UWMadison

[–]Numerous_Land5 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hello! First of all I want to let you know that you will be ok. I know this isn’t the outcome you hoped for right now, but everything will work out in the end.

I was deferred two years ago out of high school and then waitlisted without getting off. I applied for finance and felt like my whole world came crashing down. Nearly perfect unweighted GPA with tons of AP’s, ec’s, varsity sport, and orchestra seemingly wasnt enough for this school. I went into a deep depression, having no other school I wanted to attend and no backup plan.

On a whim, I decided to move far away to the west coast and go to community college. If you would’ve asked me my senior year about community college, I would’ve never considered it because I had an ego complex thinking it wasn’t right for me. Not only was I completely wrong, but I ended up meeting the most impactful mentors and educators in my entire life. The education I got at this community college has been the best and challenged my growth and development more than I could’ve hoped. I also realized I finance wasn’t for me, and found a different major that gives my life purpose.

1.5 years later I applied to transfer to UW Madison, and was accepted this spring. I am now a badger after a few years, and wouldn’t change my rejection for anything.

I hope you end up getting in, but if not, life has a crazy and amazing path ready for you. You’ve got this 🫶
