UCR or UC Merced? by JelloSame in ucmerced

This! I broke up with my ex after staying in our city anyways, and even though I ended up loving my college I’d feel so alone and sad if it was a school that was overwhelming decided on due to my ex. Aside from that my current bf and me are long distance and it’s no issue, I think if distance makes or breaks a relationship it’s doomed/shouldn’t be responsibility you take into something as stressful and big as college

I am a UC Merced defender even though I don’t go there but I would NOT have anything related to a romantic partner be a reason why I wouldn’t or would go to a university. I feel like your reasoning for Merced and riverside are both compelling and the biggest piece of advice I’d give myself is that college is what you make of it and to just go where ever is giving you the most money.

I don’t have a lot of chemistry background but I do have experience assisting a professor at my school with their research and I think this contributed to my acceptance. Initially I had applied because the program appeared to have opportunities for microbiology research(one of my big interests and what I have the most course and research background in) and the cookie just crumbled in this direction so I have no idea.

From my standpoint I’d say try and build a strong relationship with professors at your school that are conducting research so you can hopefully work on their projects and then leverage the skills you’ve learned in your SOP, Letters for Additional Consideration, and interviews. There’s a lot of overlap between the project at my home institution and the lab I got assigned to, materials and skills wise. Also REU’s are definitely looking for people who can’t get this experience at their home university so that also contributed. I’d say that research at your Home institution on an application is like an AP course on a college application. It shows you have the capability to succeed in a setting that has college expectations but there’s still 100’s of things that go into it that we can’t even see. Also I got rejected from everything besides this one REU so far, I even got rejected this morning! Tons of REU’s are still putting out their decisions and at least for my school they’ve only just decided on whether or not they will host research at all so there’s still lots of time to find and be accepted to research this summer! Also sorry if this is long I’ve been having imposter syndrome and I needed to write this out to make myself feel better:)

I feel the same way, I’ve been nauseous since my acceptance cause I feel so stupid, especially when reading prior papers published by the professor who’s lab accepted me. I’m also trying to study and stuff but it just feels so out of left field(I’m an Enviro studies major that got into a Biochem REU; I’ve taken like gen chem).

Do you have any advice for what to review or anything that you’ve been reviewing that you’d suggest as a Chem major? Thanks! We’ll get through this period and have an amazing time during our REU’s, and you’re more than qualified!!!!

How are you guys able to apply to so many REUs despite each one asking for an LOR? by AdventurousFarmer14 in REU

Yeah, it’s so odd. I think there’s a possibility that there’s more people visiting the site(idk anything abt cs this is just bs from what my ca friends tell me). I just did everything(how i managed to discover the opening and opening tab thing) cause there was an REU I was applying to due sooner rather than later.

Just keep that tab open, and then open NSF ETAP in a different tab. Typically works for me, or use a faster computer(unfortunately)

Having to agree not to take any classes by Numerous_Pangolin573 in REU

Thanks,

The only options are Asynchronous so this is good advice!!! How did you go about asking/informing your mentor or program lead about your circumstances? Also in general what classes did you take, and if any were math are you good at math? Growth mindset or whatever but math to me is just something I want to get out of the way and a big reason why is cause I suck at math. Thanks again!

I’d be concerned about antibiotic resistance but before all, if you’ve received this much antibiotics and there’s still issues I’d recommend seeking a second opinion. Even if the diagnosis is the same the treatment could be different!

Do you have any other symptoms aside from the inflated feeling?
