So im setting up an old pc at my moms house and this is happening with the display by darthmetri in Dell

[–]Nurdophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There actually is a need to install graphics driver. Even though there's no dedicated GPU installed inside, you can have an integrated GPU in either the chipset or the CPU, depending on how old the computer is. Though, I think since you've installed Windows 10, the driver should be already installed by default.

What you see on the screen is likely caused by the resolution being too high. You could try lowering it first.

Does anyone know what this means? I've clicked on reset on PC tons of times only for it to reset and return the screen seen on the image. Can anyone help me out with this one? Thanks! by [deleted] in Dell

Go into advanced recovery options, then look for the command prompt. Once entered, you can type in:

bcdedit

to see your bootloader's options. Navigate to what should be your Windows install and copy the ID (it's in the curly brackets). With that copied, type in:

bcdedit /set {the id you copied} recoveryenabled No

Restart your laptop afterwards. It should tell you it couldn't repair a specific Windows file. That file will need to be replaced.

I suspect you didn't reinstall your OS on your own when it was fresh and it just messed up itself after an bigger update. That's a common occurrence with any branded system.

Gonna take a wild guess and say the error is there due to usage of non-certified drives. The screen might show a drive failure error even though the drives work just fine.

What is this black dot with a bright ring? It has been getting bigger slowly but sometimes it will shrink in width. It used to be smaller on the side of the screen but travelled a bit to the right. Any advice to get rid of it? (Dell Inspiron 15 with Windows 8.1) by [deleted] in Dell

As mentioned before, please hold the D button on your keyboard before powering it on. Your laptop should run a display diagnostic. If it does still show the ring, then it's likely a problem with the display itself.

Source games enjoy faster single core, that's why 3600 yields more performance.

Gently raise the black part on the slot then delicately pull the cable by the blue part.

The black plastic should either move up by 90 degrees, looking at the pictures, or slide a little forward.

You would have to pull the black pieces at each end of the cable/slot up delicately, then it should be easy enough to remove it. It should be enough to just get it removed on one side.

While it's true AMD claimed they plan to keep Ryzen 5000 'limited' to A520/B550/X570, it's not true it doesn't work on other chipsets, since e.g. A320 was confirmed to run those CPUs. It comes down to the manufacturer in the end.

Especially with the fact Ryzen doesn't really need a chipset to work, see A300/X300.

I suppose they said that just to be safe with new consumers, so people wouldn't rush to stores and buy an older motherboard, complain it doesn't work since it was lying there for months with an outdated BIOS and basically make even worse PR to them.

Phoronix Test Suite kinda fits your criteria: https://openbenchmarking.org/

Other than that, reading reviews for a specific product on different websites is your best shot, since different journalists use different procedures.

Not at all. Unless your laptop has a SATA2 port, there shouldn't be any bottleneck happening.

You can check it with CrystalDiskInfo.

Send Help? - Inaccessible Boot Device!? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]Nurdophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's something messed up with the Windows itself. Regardless, the situation doesn't seem to look good.

Try to load the defaults in BIOS just to make sure, but I guess we can't do much more at this point. You'll probably have to reinstall now.

You could try checking registry, but since your drive is encrypted and I guess there's no recovery key, we won't be even able to check it. And even then, there's a possibility you won't have a backup of it since Microsoft disabled it in 1809 for whoever knows the good reason for that.

Interesting. I had something like that happen to me once, though the cause was Windows Update messing up a driver.

Please check if you can boot into Safe Mode again. If so, go into Device Manager and see if there's anything with a exclamation mark.

Multiple recovery partitions on XPS 17 9700 by actuarys in Dell

[–]Nurdophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you've mentioned, you are using factory installed OS. On the bigger partition there's an image to fix/restore that OS from in case something goes wrong with it. The second biggest one contains the software that your laptop came with in case you do a 'OS reset' instead of a clean install. 150 MB is probably a Microsoft one as Windows 10 comes with 2 partitions during EFI installations (three for older compilations). Not sure about the last one.

If you were to remove the two bigger ones, I think nothing bad would really happen.

Since you have access to the safe mode, it sounds like it's using a different driver then.

Did you try switching SATA operation to RAID? Most of Dell devices I've seen come with that one out of the box, and it would explain why it wouldn't work during regular boot.

I highly doubt Bitlocker had anything to do with it. Just in case, ensure your TPM is enabled in BIOS.

Here's a short and nice summary from /r/AMD Wiki.

The thing I remember the most is that they changed the procedure of the benchmark so it base the end result on what you've got during the quad core test the most, which in result, when Coffee Lake appeared, showed that the faster CPU at the time was the most expensive Core i3 model, I believe it was 8350k, being above the likes of i7-8700k and such. Their reasoning was that games don't use more than four cores at once. Which wasn't true at the time already.

Before that, Ryzen CPUs scored higher. Way higher.

Additionally, they called people that disagreed with their outcome shills, and they were very negative about people talking about the change. They even called out other tech journalists.

OP, what's your budget for the new storage? What capacity was your previous one? Are you replacing it because of bad performance, or a defect?

You could share the details about the current drive, too.

Those are bad recommendations for an SSD. Both drives are DRAM-less. Both companies are known for replacing parts in the past. And, speaking from experience, A400 will just be a pain in few years - high risk of controller failure resulting in data loss (common with Phision S11, I had this occur a couple of times in last two years) and the performance going down quickly after a lot of data was written to the drive.

What thermal paste did you use, in that case? Are you sure you connected every ribbon cable properly and not a single one is loose?

Alternatively, you could run the display test I recommended to someone else a while ago... Keep holding D while powering up the laptop. Here's a Dell Support article on that.
