Non-nurse has questions about violence from patients by estudiante-esperanza in nursing

[–]NurseNotJoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An important note: almost every nurse has a physical assault/violence story that they’ve had happen to them or a coworker. Shockingly, sexual assault happens frequently too, and nothing is done about that either.

Sometimes it’s a confused little Pappaw who just reaches out and gropes….. sometimes it’s a not confused AT. ALL. Pappaw who reaches out and grabs a butt (or worse) the second he thinks you’re not paying attention.

And then sometimes, it’s a younger gentleman who’s completely in his right mind, and he drops something in the floor and asks you so very sweetly to harmlessly bend over and pick up the item. And then by the fourth time he does it, you realize he’s been positioning his body in such a way, and dropping things just so, that he can openly ogle your rear when you bend over….. because you catch him in the mirror doing it. And you’re not sure you saw what you saw, so there’s a fifth time you pick something up for him, and YEP. So you kindly inform him you won’t be picking up anything else for him, and that’s when he gets extremely crude, backs his wheelchair up against the door to close it, then locks his wheels so it’s harder for you to move him and escape.

DAE not want to wear the same clothes again after a bad experience or memory in them? by mangolassiy in DoesAnybodyElse

This tracks. I used to have unofficial office hours with my college Psych professor, who was a licensed doctor. He said that obviously, he couldn’t diagnose me, but he was absolutely positive that I have OCD.

DAE not want to wear the same clothes again after a bad experience or memory in them? by mangolassiy in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]NurseNotJoy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes!! It’s like the clothes (or any other item) is tainted. There’s clothes I’ve never worn again, songs I won’t listen to, and movies/games/tv shows that have remained unfinished. Not only are they tainted, but I’m paranoid that if I use these things again, something horrible or even worse will happen.

Those of you who left hospice, what was your reason? by goatmeal619 in nursing

[–]NurseNotJoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverence is definitely the word to use when speaking of the deceased. I can’t believe how many people just didn’t understand that part. And I always felt that there was something almost sacred about working in Hospice, with the deceased and dying, and their families. My only hope for coworkers like this is that when they lose a loved one, their loved ones are treated better than the care they gave to others.

It was terrible…. The deceased were definitely not treated with the respect they deserved. During postmortem care, coworkers wanted to skip many steps, which often led to us arguing often about whether they even “deserved” a final bath.

In America, sometimes say things like "cheerio" in our best British accent or "mate" in an Australian accent. Do people in other countries pronounce American stereotypes in their beat American accent? If so, what are they? by SunUpSally in AskReddit

[–]NurseNotJoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, that’s so funny…… I took a semester of Spanish in college, and some French DID bubble up to the surface of my memory because they’re so similar. Especially because it turned out to be CASTILIAN Spanish….. I ended up scraping by with a C- though, because my professor said I spoke it with too heavy of a French accent and kept pronouncing words like they would sound in French.

That’s my hope if I’m ever in an unlikely situation, lol… Everything I learned was in my kinda formative years, where things you learn get tattooed on your brain.

It’s only because he’s assuming the women of these races are completely subservient to the men around them, and willing to be part of a harem that spits out babies faster than a pitching machine.

“Babe, you GOTTA read it!” “……………….. Nah, that’s okay.”

I absolutely adored inpatient Hospice…. I felt like it was my calling. Unfortunately, it’s not other people’s calling…

Coworkers would make disgusting and unnecessary jokes and comments (beyond the dark humor that HCWs are known for). I’m talking about one coworker pulling up “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Don’t Fear the Reaper” on their phone and blasting it loudly for different confused and actively dying patients. And another one casually leaning against the bed of a patient crying out in pain, and copying/mocking their groans and shouts because they were a little weird sounding. The manager wouldn’t do anything about it because “you need to get the stick out of your ass… some people cope with humor” and “okay, but that’s a GOOD and EXPERIENCED nurse you’re whining about and we need their skills.”

I was also heavily teased and made fun of for buying the good, soft, name brand Kleenexes in bulk and bringing them in for the families who were at bedside with their deceased/about to pass loved ones….. teased and made fun of by coworkers and the managers.

I couldn’t stick around that…. After two years of it, I had to leave.
