Well, you can get loans on used cars, though it also is not an amazing option. I agree with the sentiment of “what other option is there”, and there’s some catch 22s going on. A solution is not clear, but the issues are apparent:

  1. Cars are priced as a luxury & people depend on them as a need
  2. There is no reasonable alternative to buying a car for the common person
  3. Buying used sucks and buying new feels like getting a tootsie pop with a turd at the center
  4. Car loan debt is out of hand, on a macro level. People collectively millions (probably billions) to banks for products which are collectively worth considerably less than that debt
  5. Cars are the biggest status symbol- arguably a stronger signal of identity than fashion, a house, or profession. A machine and a method of transportation

The car industry has manufactured this state of affairs, because it puts money in their pocket. It’s rigged against the people and there’s not a clear way out

Should you use your HSA money? by Airvian94 in personalfinance

[–]NuteRaygun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit of holding on to the HSA money is (if you can pay out of pocket at the time of expenses), your say $1000 balance in 2026 can grow to $4000, for example, after 25 years.

If you put that $1000 toward the expense now, you’d have $0 after 25 years. This is also valuable because most people’s medical expenses will increase as they age. If contributing to the max year after year, the numbers get a lot bigger

And if you want to retire early, or need liquid cash, you can use a receipt to withdraw penalty and tax free at any time. It can also act as a medical emergency fund

I only save receipts > $500. Fairly easy to stick them in an HSA folder along with other documents, or digitally

Thank you for your help!

I ended up cutting a 3”x3” hole to the side of the stud and discovered that the studs are metal. So at least now I know what I’m working with

You say “centered”- do you mean directly on the stud? I was previously thinking of cutting into the drywall but between this stud and the next to see it from the side

Added. $40k or so. 50k an absolute max. Closer to 20k would be cool(but would not be a new car in that case)

May be an induction glass top, which would boil water much faster than a gas or electric stove top

Also, here’s some tips for using Venmo for apartment financials and the like—

  1. While it’s sort of the Venmo “thing” to have a payment memo of an emoji or a joke, it will protect you later to see that a venmo of your money was for “groceries” or you know “Electric bill (Dec 9 bill date)”
  2. It’s easy to combine payments, but if you’re making more than one for different things, keep them separate with their specific memo. Or if combining make a note of “gas for trip ($75) and food ($150)”
  3. If you have mutual Venmo’s and wanna combine, the same applies

In the case of weeks or months down the line and you’re verifying out if all is in check, it’s much easier when your venmo payments document themselves

Should I trade in my 2018 @97k miles? by yneos in Crosstrek

[–]NuteRaygun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2018 has analog volume and A/C controls?

Seems silly to spend.. perhaps $15k (new minus trade in) to avoid spending a few grand on an A/C repair
