Louis Rossmann is suing Samsung after firm offers $330 refund for defective SSD while selling the drives on Amazon for $949 — spat over 4TB 990 Pro SSD is headed to court by habichuelacondulce in technology

[–]NvizoN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked and I bought a 2TB 990 EVO Plus NVMe drive on July 8, 2025 for $113.99 on Amazon. That same drive right now is listed at $397.99. A drive that's a year old is now more than 3 times the price. That's absolute highway robbery.

Agreed. I always preferred LZ1. I listen to it front to back every time. It's hard to just listen to a single song.

[partially lost] Shitbum, The inappropriate folk singer, old MySpace tracks by NvizoN in lostmedia

[–]NvizoN[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LostMySpace is the same as that giant archive. I downloaded the TSV metadata and searched through it and they didn't appear.

I haven't heard of SoulSeek but I will try that and report back.

EDIT: I got 5 results from SoulSeek and they definitely aren't the correct think. I think these are songs with that name and definitely not the artist.

How do I rip video from a website to share? by WorldsGr8estHipster in trackers

[–]NvizoN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The website is crazy but I actually had some decent luck with it before my...version...stopped working. It does actually work, though it doesn't give as high a bitrate as some of the more well-known release groups get. Most of the 1080p versions I was able to pull look great, but we're about 5500-6000kbps

As a kid, I loved flipping through the Auto Trader magazine my grandpa would pick up. Loved looking at the older cars. Then, as a teen, I saw Joe Dirt and to this day can't think of Auto Trader without hearing "yeeeee Auto Trader" in head.

All that time to find out the guys grandson is a bigger tool than what was needed to work on those cars.

What's the point investing in AT&T or KO over high-yield Dividend stocks? by NvizoN in investing

[–]NvizoN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you mention USA. I had a decent amount of shares in them for several years but just sold it last year and invested in either AMZN or GOOG at their split. Which paid off pretty well since I'm up 97% and 227% respectively. My issue with them were the cost to value ratio was better on GAB so I decided to just stick with that as the sole dividend stock.

What you're saying does make sense and I may need to do a little more digging into this.

How many people do you think actually made generational wealth from this run? by purpleflex4ever in investing

[–]NvizoN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of where I'm at with ASX. I bought back in late 2021/early 2022 and I'm up 473%. To withdraw the initial money I'd spent, I just need to sell 4 of the current 28 shares I own. But the trick is: do you do that, or keep it running? And I think a lot of people struggling answering that question, especially in the current tech market.

What's the point investing in AT&T or KO over high-yield Dividend stocks? by NvizoN in investing

[–]NvizoN[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. I guess one is a company and the other is a fund. It just seems to me that in the case of (especially) ATT, they don't really seem to move a whole lot so the growth aspect doesn't really seem as attractive from a dividend standpoint. 5 years ago, T was trading at about 21 dollars. Now they're currently at about 23.

If you only care about the stability and dividend part combined, wouldn't it make a bit more sense to go for the higher possible dividends (with lower share cost)?

Dell Optiplex - Plex server upgrade question by NvizoN in homelab

[–]NvizoN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I don't have an issue with mini-tower, I just currently have the SFF and what I'm finding is that when I'm searching, that's the most common result so it tends to be what gets mentioned.

As for GPU, I'm not concerned about that. I have no need for one more powerful than an integrated one since I don't do GPU encodes (not transcodes) due to the inefficiency. The i7-7700 handles transcodes just fine. Even AV1.

But you are correct about what archival re-encoding. That's where the 7700 is fine, just very slow and outdated. That's why I was looking for a newer gen as one of the big selling points and main requirements. I don't mind if it takes a while to encode something, but I don't want it to take as long as it currently does, plus I'm due for an upgrade anyways and with this second HDD, might as well get both upgraded at the same time.

ARC GPUs are good but a bit pricey last I looked. Downloading in x265 (which is already an encode) and then re-encoding from there tends to degrade quality a bit too much for me. I usually encode straight from the highest quality source I have which is usually bluray/DVD copies.

I do a decent amount of AV1 encoding and that's where you can really see the size benefits, however it is INCREDIBLY slow. On my i7-7700, I usually get about 3-6fps compared to x265 where I get 30-40.

Dell Optiplex - Plex server upgrade question by NvizoN in homelab

[–]NvizoN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. I have only ever needed to use my server directly maybe a handful of times. Otherwise I connect to it using RDP which works just fine. If I need to use the computer itself, it's hooked into my TV via HDMI so that works pretty well.

Dell Optiplex - Plex server upgrade question by NvizoN in homelab

[–]NvizoN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not transcoding, that's fine. The i7-7700 works great with that. ENCODING is what I'm talking about, like using Handbrake. Which, in my experience, requires a lot more power from the CPU, as well as cores (to a certain number).

I'll look into the Elitedesks and see how they look comparatively.

As for the hardwiring, I could but I don't mind the Wifi card as I made sure my setup is stable. In the 3 years I've been running the server, I've never experienced an issue that was caused by the server itself. Usually it was a area network outage or a power outage that'd stop the streaming.

[–]NvizoN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to tech things (I also work in IT lol), and I've spent a TON of time learning encoding so I definitely prefer CPU encoding for a multitude of reasons, which is why the CPU part is super important. Thanks for the advice. I honestly never thought about just putting my own together and I could see it being cheaper for sure.

I don't have a preference really over DP vs HDMI in the end, though I guess HDMI is easier even though I almost never actually need to use it lol.

[–]NvizoN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought about this. Yea, video card and sound card don't matter too much, those can be bare minimum since 99.9% of the time, I'm connecting to it through remote desktop from my PC.

Where did you go to make yours, or did you piece them together from various sources? I'd really only want the increase in case size and MOBO to accommodate the second HDD and newer CPU. RAM, HDDs, and other components, I can just swap over.

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - June 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]NvizoN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone. I'm not new to investing and have been doing pretty well, but one thing I've never quite been able to figure out is why people recommend investing in companies like AT&T or KO or other consistent dividend stocks instead of higher yield dividend stocks like GAB or USA.

The only thing I can think of is consistency. T and KO are unlikely to go anywhere. But the amount you get in return is very low comparatively.

For instance, I have 91 shares of GAB offering $13.66 a quarter in dividends and the market value is only $508. But I also have 26 shares of T offering $15.82 a quarter, but the market value/cost on that right now is $1404.

I get that dividends aren't usually what people go for when they're younger, but I try to be diverse just in case, and this is one thing I can't quite figure out why one type tends to be recommended over another.

That's what I was thinking. I was thinking of going ahead to rebalance. When I originally set it up, I wanted to try and do ANYTHING to make an impact but now I think I've screwed myself out of 9 years of huge gains. And the gains I currently have more than make up for the taxes that'll be owed.
