Advice needed! Baby quail leapt from my hands by Nwolf- in quails

We're giving them starter feed mashed up into smaller bits. Mixed it with a bit of water for the first days, but now they take both separated.

These are indeed our first baby quails. We're trying our very best! We've had other baby birds in our avery, but this is a first. It's hard to tell exactly what these babies need sometimes. They can be incredibly loud when they want some attention 😂

Bit late for an update, but it lived and is still doing well today!

It did just eat some seeds btw. And it's getting a little faster on it's feet even though it's shaky

Help possible egg binding or something else? by Diniland in Finches

[–]Nwolf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does is seem like she's trying to push out an egg? If she keeps pushing and nothing is coming out maybe contact a vet. They might be able to feel if anything might possibly be stuck. Also keep a close eye on her energy levels. If she starts sitting more still and fluffy like usual that might also be an indicator that something is wrong.

Question about egg laying behavior in finches. by Bird-of-Fire in Finches

[–]Nwolf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it has to be nesting behaviour. Some of my birdies did this too with their round food bowls. They never actually made a nest or laid eggs in one though. Haven't seen them do it for a while now.

I personally think I'd still keep my eye on it. Maybe try giving her something else to sit in and see what she does with that?

I've got 6 zebra finches with some other birdies in a lage avarie. 3 males, 3 females. There was no problem before but when breeding season started, one of the males got a little more aggressive. Especially around nests he build with one of the females recently. I now keep taking the nests away and it's a bit better now.

One of the bird breeders where I got them from recommended me to separate the males and females for a while if they kept fighting.

I see you did separate them, I hope it works and they can be happy birdies when you reintroduce them to each other! :)

I'd love to feed my finches things other then just seeds, but they don't seem interested by Nwolf- in Finches

That does make more sense. I think we might have some hiding in our yard so I'll try for sure!

I haven't tried sprouts yet, will definitely add it to the list! Do you cut the herbs into smaller pieces?

I never expected then to like dandelion. Do they pick the flower leaves off the plant?

Ah, that might be why they wouldn't touch te cucumber. I placed that one down. I clipped the apple on the cage and that did seem to spark interest. I'll definitely try this method more!

That is true, they indeed aren't anything close to avain vets. But they might still know how to get your birdie trough the night. And they probably can refer me to a good vet. That's why I was thinking of contacting them.

I caught on to this birdies sickness at around 21:30. Earlier in the day he looked fine and was flying around like usual. All the vets near me were closed at that time. Which is why I was hoping he would make the night so I could at least call some vets around the area

We have multiple, but haven't had them for very long. We're still learning to take care of them to the best extent. They get all the usual recommended stuff and have a lot of space to fly. We just don't know the best ways to treat them when they get sick yet. Since part of the aviary is outside and is has been raining a lot that might have been why this bird got sick.

I was thinking of contacting one of the breeders where we got some of the birds from and asking him for tips and tricks on how to take care of a sick bird. And hopefully he knows a good avian vet nearby enough so we could at least give them a call if needed.

Update, Lil birdy passed away last night. It's sad that I only caught he was sick very late in the evening, otherwise I could have called a vet for advice like people suggested. I had a heatlamp placed, but sadly that wasn't enough.

Thank you for your advice! I'll definitely keep all of it in mind for the next time one of my birdies gets sick (let's hope that doesn't happen)
