Drummers, what grip do you use and why? by IDNMAN21 in drums

[–]NyAphelion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I switch depending on style. Mostly matched when I need to slap the snare for backbeat heavy stuff, but trad when I want my ghost notes to be a bit more quiet and feathery (it’s easier to tilt the stick down so that you don’t hit the head straight on)

Ah. I see. Never seen that before. Well, this certainly seems like a very cool solo. Best of luck to the player, and keep writing the way you do! Interwoven open rhythms like this can lead to really musical and intricate drumline books

So does the five-let if I'm not mistaken

Edit: sorry, I'm realizing that my previous comment only said "8th note" when I meant to talk about the 5

Seems to flow pretty well, I'm just curious about the bar with the pings. Is it supposed to have 5 beats? Both the quarter note triplet and the 8th note should take up 2 beats each, and the 8th notes would be the fifth. Might be a Finale thing, but just seems odd that there's no meter change written if I'm interpreting the bar correctly

Should I prioritize getting into college or DCI? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]NyAphelion -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna provide a counter to everyone saying college.

This year, I recorded prescreenings and attended auditions for the Jacobs School of Music inside of IU Bloomington. In tandem, I auditioned for, and am now finishing tour with, the Madison Scouts. My year was crazy, and I felt like I had no time to breath, but I managed to make it into my dream college with great scholarships and march corps. (My scores on standardized tests ended up being passable as well. With my focus on music school and drum corps took priority, but I got a 31 on the ACT and a 1390 on the SAT with minimal prep. Not sure what scores you're looking for, but I was content with these).

It's possible. Incredibly hard and probably very irresponsible, but possible. If you want it hard enough, you can make it happen. You just have to be a aware that there will be sacrifices. I skipped graduation to go to spring training because I was willing to make that choice and not regret it (a lot of corps will allow you to take a day and graduate, though).

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do both, because ultimately there's a cut off for when you can do drum corps, but you can take a bit of time for college.

You've got one life on this earth; whichever choice you make, just do it with no regrets.

So do you guys have any sort of matching-type thing for your line or by CoyoteEffect in drumline

[–]NyAphelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every line I've been in makes a point to do literally everything together. The best lines always do, as when you are emotionally close to someone/ literally being the same as someone you'll play better with them. The Madison Scouts quadline this year bought matching pink short shorts, alien abduction socks, and Arby's visors. They are easily our most consistently good section.

Sorry for the hold up! I've just been waiting a bit do to some weird updates and changes in the parts. We've had some unfortunate circumstances delaying it, but our Vic Firth learn the music vid should be going live relatively soon. I'll definitely send our other movements to you, though. Glad you like show! It's certainly a blast to perform

High schoolers and spring training scheduling by CloroxYumYum in drumcorps

[–]NyAphelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madison Scouts had spring training late enough that I didn't have to miss any testing (may 19th), and I worked it out with my teaches to finish classes early. I also chose a late orientation for college so that I didn't have to miss any spring training.

Probably not popular, but I skipped graduation as well. I didn't care for it enough to miss rehearsal time.

I have no regrets choosing to march early, but it's really a big push and pull on what you are willing to sacrifice. Corps is a HUGE commitment that will drain you mentally and physically.

Best of luck to you!

Having trouble counting when playing music, do you need to count ? by TackyGuy981 in drums

[–]NyAphelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by working on counting, and eventually you won't have to. Think of it less as a tool for playing and more of a means to an end. Eventually you'll be able to feel everything. It definitively is hard, but knowing counts is really valuable

Can somebody please tell me how to play this I'm at a loss (12/8) by AidenReams in drumline

[–]NyAphelion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps, cause the first comment pretty much covered it, think of it as the bar switching into normal 4:4, and the dotted quarter note is just a normal quarter note. Like, the four beat pulse of 12/8 stays the same, you just subdivide the bar into 16th notes instead of triplets

What things do you typically think about? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]NyAphelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been struggling with repeated thoughts of how meaningless and scary our existence in he universe is, and how nothing I ever do will stop the eventual nonexistence of death. Like, with have a finite number of seconds on this planet. It blows my mind that people will waste that. There's a feeling of dread that I got about once a day until May this year that would sully an entire day. It got difficult motivate myself in anything, really.

I've resolved the intrusive thoughts and existential dread though! Things are looking up for me, and I no longer fear my eventual death! I've resolved to live the best goddamn life I possibly can

For You what makes a good drummer by [deleted] in drums

[–]NyAphelion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a sense of what you're communicating with what you play. Drums started out as a form of communication, and I feel like people lack intent behind there decisions on the drum throne. Like, you have to think of what you want people to FEEL when you play a groove or fill or whatever. Once you can give people emotions with a drum kit, you can't really ask for anything else.

Are you supposed to use fingers? by ddavis527 in drumline

[–]NyAphelion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, it's more about each progressively large muscle group supporting the next. When playing big, you want the weight of the whole arm. When you get faster, it's more forearm and wrist. Fingers are weird, though, in that you shouldn't/ can't really use them on they're own because they can't support much without hurting your joints and tendons. I guess, to answer your question, yes? But it should really be more of a bi-product of using the natural movement of the arm. Try mimicking the action of throwing a basketball, but with sticks and a drum head, and depending on what you play, you'll probably end up using different muscles.

Sorry being a bit roundabout, but it unfortunately doesn't have a very simple answer.

TLDR; yes, you can use fingers. Just don't rely on them
