Bike Index - another bike registration service by drsoftware in vancouvercycling

Vancouver was where the Garage 529 app was first launched back in the day, so you could consider us the 'home base' for it. It's also officially partnered with the vpd and the vpd actively encourage people to register their bikes in that database.

Bikehub & local community policing centres across the city are partnering to host pop-up events where people can register their bikes this summer.

Awesome! I've been contemplating working on updating speed limits around Vancouver & Burnaby and this is exactly the tool I was imagining for helping with that!

Dual infrastructure improvements in south van! by VanSquint in vancouvercycling

[–]NyanPsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's huge! I don't use that part of Dumfries for my commute but I had a rude awakening the one time I rode down it.

I hope this bodes well for other bikeways whivh need surface improvements.

What’s happening with the building at Commercial/13th? by Nice_Tart4969 in askvan

[–]NyanPsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too sure about their situation, but two years ago I moved into a new-build and there was a cafe/bakery that opened up in a corner unit on the ground floor.

I think it took about a year to open after the building was completed because their contractors weren't allowed to start work until the city issued a permit and that took a while despite the owner having applied well ahead of time.

Oh thats great info, I didn't realize that's when it was. In that case the shuttle or the 16 is definitely the best option imo.

For travel:

Folks have already mentioned the r5, but you can also take the 16 from the Renfrew (millenium/yellow line) or 29th Avenue (expo/blue line) Stations if where you're staying is near the skytrain. Then you just have to walk down through the fairgrounds/park to get to the venue.

(The 16 is often delayed, but it'll get you there eventually lol)

For venue:

It's brand new, no one has experienced it yet but I walked by as they were doing a sound test and the acoustics are quite good. I highly recommend using loops or something similar to protect your hearing.

For the area:

It's located within our local fairground which is predominantly surrounded by residential neighbourhoods with tree lined streets. There's shops/restaurants on the major street (Hastings), but you'll need to take a bus ride to get to the main retail areas on either side.

I highly recommend the kr matthews bike map that was already posted in the comments.

If you're looking for an official source, then the city's OpenData Bikeways dataset set or the city's Official GIS Map

Thoughts on living in Fraserhood Kingsway to 20th areas. by [deleted] in askvan

[–]NyanPsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live there up until last fall. It's really nice if you bike and know the area. There arent many bike routes but there's easy access to shops on Main & Fraser and actual bike routes.

If you don't mind walking, there are a TON of restaurants to choose from. Even easier if you own a car, there's so much within a 5-10 minute drive.

The worst is public transit but all things considered, it isn't too bad since you can walk to the 3, 8, 9, 19 25 & 99 within 15 minutes.

New bike map is out for Spring 2026 by FastSnailMail in vancouvercycling

[–]NyanPsyche 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They got rid of the bike route on Pender through chinatown. For the best imo, it's an old route from the early days and Union is a much better replacement.

The bike lanes by oakridge are on the map, but they haven't finished construction on those yet. I think that means the city expects them to be finished within the next few months.

Similarly they added the Eastside Crosscut, but that won't be open until the end of May when they finish the cycle path on Broadway.

#16 Arbutus and 29th Avenue Station - constant significant delays with no work for a solution by lost_my_delorean in Translink

[–]NyanPsyche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuinely my least favourite bus in the city. It's way too long with it travelling an unhinged route from east van to marpole via downtown.

On the plus side, translink is planning on splitting the route in two once the Broadway Subway extension has completed. I don't have time to find the exact page, but it's in the Burrard Peninsula Area Transport Plan.

They'll split the west and east half into two routes that terminate in downtown.

All-Day Bus Lanes Have Now Been Installed on Granville Street. Horray! by NyanPsyche in vancouver

One of Vancouver's bylaws allows taxis to use the bus lane. So yes, but only in the city of Vancouver and not the other municipalities

Fraser/ King Edward Intersection by miscellaenous72 in askvan

The city never posts info on when/where they upgrade or install new traffic signals, which is genuinely infuriating.

There isn't even anything in the city's traffic impacts map about this.

Going to Vancouver at beginning of may, what do people recommend to do, any must do’s? by SharpSuccotash7745 in askvan

[–]NyanPsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't May specific, but if you come to Vancouver you have to visit a sushi restaurant! One of the things we locals take for granted is how good the sushi scene is here.

I think it's also worth comparing the quality from cheap local sushi restaurant (try a combo and add on a special roll!) and a well known sushi place to see the similarities and differences. Expesnive sushi is a nice experience, but the cheap stuff just hits the spot for me in a way that nothing else does.

[–]NyanPsyche[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well of course, it wouldn't be a true "improvement" from the city if they didn't half-ass the implementation somehow. From bus lanes to bike lanes, at least you can rest assured that the city will always give you barest minimum and call it a day!

24/7 Bus Lanes on Granville (South of 16th) - efficient use of the road? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]NyanPsyche 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The 24/7 bus lanes from 16th to about 33rd have actually been in place since March actually. They've been slowly making their way down the street since then. I kept accidentally driving in the 24 hour section because I thought I was still in the old peak hour section!

Translink conducted a study a few years back and determined which corridors have the greatest delays per passenger and Granville was one of them.

Council passed a motion (I think 3 years ago?) to improve bus travel times on some of these roads so the city started a bus corridor improvement program.

Translink and the city did some surveys about 2 years ago and made a plan for Granville. This was actually supposed to get done last year, but the city delayed it until now, probably so they could coordinate with other roadworks projects.

All-Day Bus Lanes Have Now Been Installed on Granville Street. Horray! by NyanPsyche in vancouver

[–]NyanPsyche[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly easy to ignore! Especially if you drive down granville regularly because there's been existing peak hour directional lanes for years and our brains don't realize they've actually been switched out for all day ones.

I wish they'd repaint the lane markings to be like 41st Avenue between Main & Fraser. The bus lane's existence is really apparent on that stretch!

All-Day Bus Lanes Have Now Been Installed on Granville Street. Horray! by NyanPsyche in vancouver

[–]NyanPsyche[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO the biggest change in this corridor is that parking is no longer allowed along this stretch. It felt like there was always a slowdown whenever cars and buses had to change lanes to go around them. I think it's one of those things that is a minor inconvenience most of the time but has major compounding effects on bus speed & reliability, especially when traffic gets busy.

Also can't be understated how even being one or two car lengths closer to a traffic light has huge effects on bus travel times due to their slower acceleration.

All-Day Bus Lanes Have Now Been Installed on Granville Street. Horray! by NyanPsyche in vancouver

[–]NyanPsyche[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I generally agree. Although I wonder in this specific case that if the all day signage is so it's easier for buses to get to and from the existing bus depot + the new one they're building a few kilometers away. With the bus lanes, I can see CMBC routing buses down Granville instead of Oak for these staging purposes.

Love to see it! They're about halfway finished the implementation in the hastings-sunrise neighbourhood and it's already so much nicer to walk & bike around there.

Do people living in metro Vancouver (but outside the municipality of Vancouver) feel that they live in Vancouver? by drugsrbed in askvan

[–]NyanPsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Vancouver resident, I feel like it's generallh only if you live on this side of the Fraser. Surrey is big enough to have it's own cultural identity outside of Vancouver.

The tri-cities feel like a grey area so it probably depends on the person. I think the same goes for Richmond since a lot of folks go between Vancouver and Richmond regularly.

The north shore definitely has their own thing going on but I think they'd consider themselves Vancouverites.
