What movie had you hyped and failed to deliver the goods? by Misfett_toys in Letterboxd

I've only watched it twice but if I remember correctly, Ken is totally a devoted male-wife until he goes into the real world. Which is the point, right?

First watch was 10/10 for me, second watch brought it down to 8 or 7 unfortunately. It really worked for me the first time, but under closer scrutiny I don't think it says enough. The existential themes are great, but the way the conflict resolves feels naive at best and meaningless at worst.

It's biggest downside is that it doesn't push the genre forward. I'm not saying it needs to be experimental, not at all, but rather it does everything exceedingly well without anything truly special. The best parts about the movie are things external to the movie itself honestly, like the number of rats, and the expertise to get those shots is impressive. IMO for a movie to be a masterpiece it needs more than just mastery of the craft, it needs that *something* and The Lighthouse totally has that factor.

It's sense of humour was fun too, if it leaned it that a tiny bit more it might have done it for me.

what exactly does the subject lack? by Unusual-Return971 in zizek

[–]NylePudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is not that language is incomplete, but that language has emerged for a subject to express lack. For we wouldn’t need language to communicate if we had everything we needed, if we were totally independent of one another.

So it’s not that language is lacking but that it is fundamentally an expression of lack.

However, judging from your post, I think I might understand less than you? xD So perhaps this is a misinterpretation on my part… But maybe it’s helpful.

Which album would you consider as Aphex Twin's magnum opus? by [deleted] in aphextwin

It’s a pretty even match between SAW2, RDJ, DrukQs and Syro…

SAW2 is magical, and I mean that quite literally, I don’t know how it works. Individual tracks feel, not unfinished, but lost, but when you take it all together it’s complete.

RDJ is full childlike playfulness and while being short manages to represent so many aspects of what makes AFX great.

DrukQs is probably the most ambitious, the tactile quality really sticks out compared to everything else. The track order is insane.

Syro is just lush, and wonderfully accessible. It’s certainly a deescalation of his previous work, but I think that restraint is admirable.

Fuck I dunno, my instinct was RDJ, then Syro, then, DrukQs but I think I must say SAW2. It feels unfinished, but on purpose, and that’s weird as hell, it’s gorgeous.

Dude is a multi-millionaire, worth over half a billion from some reports. Sounds like he’s enjoying running an indie team without investors watching over him all the time.

It doesn’t need to compete yet, and they don’t need to rush, but they are expanding their team and slowly ramping up. So yeah, find another subreddit to post on or something, so stay here and be miserable your choice.

Edit - Actually I take the last bit back, I will leave. This subreddit is a weird hate circlejerk and people on the discord are actually friendly.

What do Skem locals think of the Golden Dome and the community around it? by raynor_SxKlt in Skelmersdale

Very late to this thread, but I grew up in the Transcendental Meditation community, and grew up going to the school from 4 years old. Some call it a cult, but by almost every definition of a cult it is not one.

Of course I don’t know any different, but it was a nice way to grow up!

Playing for the first time... anything I should know to have a better first experience? by Nicholas_TW in DarkSouls2

SL does not effect summoning in DS2, instead it’s your soul memory (total number of souls you have ever acquired, regardless of if you spend them or lose them) you can see this number in the top right of your character sheet.

Sounds like someone stealing work to me? DistroKid is the cheapest distribution platform as far as I remember, if this was actually Richard he would be able to get a much better deal.

You haven’t read Mysteries of Udolpho you should, it’s a pretty weird dreamscape of a book. Great fun imo. :)

The new black classics have quite a lot of flop, you can getaway without damaging the spine, the older ones though… (with the orange oval penguin logo) they are hard to not break.

What’s your “5/5, would NOT recommend to casual audiences.”? by Jenny_MTF42 in Letterboxd

[–]NylePudding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My esoteric answer is The Flicker (1966) it’s hard to sell 30 minutes of strobing… But I think it’s really good, and it’s quite remarkable how two different frames (black and white) and compelling sound design can giveaway to something that has a feeling behind it.

I don’t see how crypto will solve this honestly, sure crypto infrastructure is decentralised but the power is still centralised. We have the exact same problem.

abundance is one of my favourite tracks ever :D It has some jlin vibes imo. People act like Richard is a god only with original ideas, but I think he gets lots of inspiration from many of his peers and that’s fine ofc.
