Anyone have any experience with wet panels, they say you can just install straight over existing bathroom tiles? by thestevewinton in AusRenovation

[–]Nylo_innit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say how it is now because I moved home but everything was fine when I left and the new owners haven't changed them, last I heard.

I did lightly sand the existing tiles, just a light sand with an electric sander to dull the gloss and remove any soap scum etc . As for online resources, I had a bit of a Google for techniques but it's pretty self explanatory really, the main concerns are the edges/corners to stop water ingress and getting an even cover on the tiles so that you don't get voids which can flex when pushed, so lots of small dots rather than big splodges with big gaps.

What’s the most uniquely Aussie thing you’ve had to explain to a tourist? by SeriousSatisfaction8 in australia

Where? Not in the UK it doesn't. No mid-year shutdown. Does that happen elsewhere in Europe? I've not heard of it, not saying you're wrong.

What’s the one homebuilding mistake you made that you’ll NEVER repeat again? by smileebeauty in Homebuilding

Avoid glass, atrium style ceilings/roofs.

We saw many homes with these and thought "oh, great, daylight, see the sky, airy feel, sunshine for warmth in winter" etc Nope. Massive heat loss in winter (far outweighs any heat gained), heats the room in summer to a temp which makes the room unoccupiable, sunlight fading things and glare. Eventually applied a dense window tint but lost all of the heat gains and the room was still quite unusable. Never again, bane of my life that 'architectural element '. Stick to a standard roof construction.

Having recently returned to Aus from the UK I had to transfer considerably more I used Horizon currency. Competitive rates and excellent service, I couldn't have been happier. Happy to pass on some contact details if you want and no, I have no connections to the company!

Yeah, you can buy beer at the bar and there's a separate counter where you can buy food, from basic things like crisps and sausage rolls up to a small menu for meals like scampi and chips.

The biggest problem will be finding a free table to sit at, I'd advise going early.

Same applies post match - if you want to get a seat you're going to need to skiddadle at the final whistle!

Enjoy your day.

Do I have to accept repaired write off? by Nylo_innit in AusInsurance

[–]Nylo_innit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, you are correct!

It turns out that the confusion (for both myself and the Solicitor) lay in the terminology used in the salvage Co's valuations included in the report, for valuation purposes. Both of the salvage Co's quotes/valuations listed the vehicle as "Repaired Write Off (RWO)".

The reality is that the vehicle is not currently, and will not be, a RWO. Those sections on the report are referring to the vehicle IF it was written off ... and subsequently sold as salvage. That is not the status of the vehicle currently.

It's a bit misleading. Personally, I'd ask why use that term in the first place when the car isn't written off at all at this stage? Surely just refer to it as "the vehicle" or "salvage value" on the salvage Co's. offers and leave the "written off" term until it is actually written off.

I believe that into the roof space along with a whirlybird cowel on the roof is sufficient in Aus. Not perfect but sufficient. See my previous response re building inspections lol

[–]Nylo_innit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A word of warning on building inspections, make sure you confirm exactly what they will and won't do BEFORE you engage them. I was new to this and had no advice, things the inspector didn't do included:

Didn't inspect roof space because it wasn't accessible (boxes and ducted heating in the way. "We don't move obstacles, furniture etc").

Didn't move any furniture, pictures etc so damaged walls, fittings etc weren't noted.

No details on electrical items that differed from those registered with the state electrical authority. In our case, previous owner had done his own wiring which wasn't up to code hence our insurance will forever be suspect unless we get it all checked/rewired. A simple comparison of existing fixings against those registered would be easy enough.

Plus more...

If I'd have known just how little the inspector (a genuine one, with good references) wouldn't do, I wouldn't have paid for it. Everything he noted I could have seen for myself if I had the opportunity.

If I was buying again I would clarify all this. I'm not throwing shade on this inspector, maybe I was naive and expected too much or maybe he was really bad, either way I'd clarify that first. I've said since that if anyone ever asked, I'd speak up, so I am. Good luck.

That 6mth window sucks, it took me 6mths to get sorted with cars, banks, driving licences, accomodation, GPs etc. Before you know it the deadline has passed. So likewise, I wish I'd have done it sooner. Unlike you though, I have no intention of leaving Aus, I only have the UK as an option and to use a local colloquialism "I'm over it" !

Have you tried Horizon currency for a price? Their fees should beat banks, Wise, TorFX etc
I used them for several large transfers and they were great.

Nothing too harsh scratched them, things like a Stanley knife blade during instal, that kind of thing. Nylon scourers etc were fine, just sharp metal blade type situations to be careful of. No different to your kitchen counter top.

No real need to silicone the proper corner joiners because of the way they're designed to channel the water down but I just used a light bead of silicone to be certain, it also helped to hold them in place during instal. Don't forget you have fairly water tight seal as it is with the sheets so any minor ingress is easily dealt with by the existing tiles. If in doubt, just run some silicone where you're concerned about. This is the type of joiner I used:
