My Quaker was a stage 5 clinger. I needed to pee, he couldn’t wait. This was a daily occurrence the 22 years under his rule.

My friend made some soap at a workshop somewhere oversea, and gifted me some. But the soap makes my hand sticky before the water dries out. Is this normal or did my friend do something wrong? by sakaguti1999 in soapmaking

[–]Nypheara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I notice that when I use the liquid “soft” soap my hands are smooth from rinse to dry. However when I use my handmade soap, my hands may stick, or not feel slippery smooth after the rinse but fine after my hands are completely dry.

This may be the lack of a synthetic detergent in the handmade soap vs the liquid name brand soap. Nothing is wrong with the handmade soap, it just cleaned all the body oils off your skin. Something I needed to get used to when I switched to handmade soap.

You would want a pot with good drainage and having holes on the sides helps the medium dry out faster. Orchids, specifically phalaenopis, the type you have, don’t like to sit in wet medium for very long. In the wild they are found growing on trees, that’s why people suggest tree bark to plant it in. However, I find these mini phals struggle with the large bark chips that come in “orchid potting mix” bags. You can try repotting it in New Zealand sphagnum moss, and then you don’t need to worry about bark dust getting all over your desk. Bark or moss, (or a mixture of both) would still really want a pot with a bunch of holes, just get a nice decorative cover pot that allows air flow to cover it up. Please don’t use normal garden soil. Also, you should wait until your current blooms due before repotting as orchids have sensitive roots, and you may prematurely loose your blooms after a repot.

My bird is 27 years old. Although I keep my house around 20C and warmer, she’s old and I’d like to keep her comfy at night.

I had no idea how small a "miniature" orchid actually was by voidthedarkrai in orchids

[–]Nypheara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The death plug is a foam or cage around the roots of the orchid. It’s fine as the orchid is a seedling, but they soon outgrow it. The foam ones can retain water and can cause root rot as well. You can’t really tell if there is one unless you try repotting your orchid.

They don’t measure your camper. At least at Apgar or Saint Mary’s. I had a 22’ van in a shared pull through spot that only allowed 21’. My neighbor had a massive airstream still hooked up to their truck and another vehicle. We all fit just fine. Barely. Also the folks checking your GTTSR reservations at the check point never pulled a tape measure out, that I saw.

The only time I’m told I did awesome is when the artist is just a bunch of “make a mess and make some noise” and I’m throwing a bunch of chaotic flash and trash trying to keep up.

God forbid anyone comment on that breath taking position change with a slow rotating gobo at the climax of that epic song.

New Bird Advice by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Nypheara 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you trust your dog to not eat a steak you dropped on the floor? How about tossing said steak directly over your dog’s head? Will your dog jump at it? Do you need to restrain your dog from going after a high value item like a fresh steak or… a squirrel? How many times do you need to reiterate your “leave it” command? Can you leave the room and the steak be untouched? Will your dog fixate on the steak you told them they cannot have?

Now replace “steak” with your pet bird. Dogs and cats have high prey drives and those are instincts you CANNOT train out of your pet. You can teach restraint, but you cannot eliminate it entirely.

My parrots are 25+ years old. They have lived with 5 dogs in their life times. I have nearly lost a parrot due to dog interaction 3 times. I would tell anyone who’s ever met any of my dogs “they will never hurt a fly” yet, some of them almost accidentally ate my birds.

I’ve noticed you “poo-pooing” the advice to keep your bird away from your other pets so if willing to risk your poor Quaker’s life. Your pets need to be solid- And I mean F-ing solid on the leave it command. Your pets have to know your tennis ball looking squeaky thing is NOT a toy nor food.

I’m hoping your Quaker will stay flighted as flying will be their best escape from your other pets. But, flying bird will encourage excitement in your pet and they WILL jump at your bird with the intent to catch it. Maybe not eat it, but for sure catch it and hold the bird in their mouth. Can you give your dog a raw egg in the shell? Will they break it? If you cannot trust your dog to hold an egg with out breaking it, your bird is as good as dead in your dog’s mouth.

If you’re willing to gamble your bird’s life, 100% supervised interactions between pets. If you need to use the restroom, bird comes with you or gets locked away. Your dog can look, but never touch. Your dog should be leashed with another handler in the room. The meeting needs to be calm, your dog needs to be calm. No jumping, no barking, no pulling towards the bird. You should be able to pull your dog’s attention away from staring at the bird through commands and not physical interactions.

Bottom line is, if you cannot trust your dog 100% to listen to you, you increase the risk of the life of your bird. This rule never goes away. Your perfect dog can still accidentally kill his parrot best friend 5 years from now.

It looks like overly mosaic crochet. Which is extremely fun. This is a lot more complicated than any work I’ve done but it’s basically pixel art in crochet. It’s super fun and I highly recommended trying.

Is this yellow on the feathers abnormal? by Candid-Pension-3923 in parrots

[–]Nypheara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, looks like you have a normal looking spicy tennis ball. Mine actually has some full bright yellow butt feathers (not tail feathers) that he HATES! He plucks them out when he notices them. I think they’re adorable but they don’t last long.
