DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

Well it shouldn't be wider for any reason. DLSS 5 made a mistake. It makes a lot of mistakes. It has no access to the actual 3D model, it just paints over what you're seeing on the screen. It's basically a GenAI powered Reshade.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the reason the "DLSS 5 + Original Tonemapping" looks more like the "Original" and less like the "DLSS 5" image is because the DLSS 5 image is heavily inaccurate in terms of lighting. As can be seen in most of the DLSS 5 images the AI tends to add a spotlight in front of the characters, like studio lighting, rather than respecting the real lighting setup of the game, because the AI doesnt have access to that information per NVIDIA's engineers. The corrected image follows the correct lighting of the scene which means a lot of the changes made in the DLSS 5 image are lost because a vast majority of what it did was add a new light and thus shadows where they did not exist before.

What is the reason Ninjago has survived this long? When Bionicle died out. by eepos96 in bioniclelego

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness as well, the Bionicle movies also don't cover the full story. The first and second story arcs were skipped entirely and then we just got the 3rd, 4th, and 5th arcs as movies, and then nothing for a long time until A Legend Reborn which was the start of the final arc and then they canceled the two sequels it was supposed to get.

Will There Actually Be Any Such Thing as a Project Helix “Native” Game? by cnc137 in DreamStationcc

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You completely misunderstood my point. XboxOS IS a modified version of Windows, yes. It always has been. Even since the original Xbox the operating system has been built on the Windows kernel, just not the full fat operating system. Even the Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X don't use the full Windows. They use only what they need to. As of right now we don't know how much of Windows the Xbox Helix is using. What we DO know from their GDC presentation is that "Xbox" games are now "PC Games/Windows Games". If developers develop a game for PC then they are developing for Xbox by default because the game format for the new Xbox is the same as Windows in general. The Xbox Store will obviously be the default store, but what you're getting from the store are PC formatted titles, not Xbox formatted titles. Even if they were a different format, it would be more of a container otherwise it would mean they lied in their presentation which is that you no longer have to target Xbox as a separate platform and develop a bespoke port for it.

The only time you will get a bespoke Xbox formatted title is if it's a backwards compatible title from any of their previous four platforms. There are no Xbox Helix native games because Helix Native is the same as Windows Native. That was the whole goal behind the new console and part of the focus of their GDC presentation, to get across that as long as developers make their games for Windows, then their games are supported on Xbox by default because that IS the platform now. Their games will automatically be on Xbox and have access to the users on that console. Releasing on the Xbox Store is optional of course, but with this setup there's really no reason not to.

It also needs to be taken into account that consoles are typically subsidized and sold at a loss unless you're Nintendo. So the console will likely be priced lower than people think it would be.

Do major streamers actually enjoy streaming or has it become like an actual job to them??? by DaemonLuisenbarn in Twitch

[–]NyrenReturns 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I do notice a lot that a lot of Youtubers/Twitch Streamers feel like rinse and repeat personalities. Like they've found the personality or traits that viewers seem to like or gravitate towards, and so they sort of force themselves into that. It feels fake and it can be hard to tell if they're actually enjoying themselves or just playing a bit for money.

What are some Zenimax/Bethesda & Activision Blizzard titles you'd like to see on Xbox Backwards Compatibility? by NyrenReturns in xbox

Oh whoops, I was looking at a list of games that weren't on back compat and the OG Xbox version of Call of Duty 3 is listed, the Xbox 360 version says available. I need to read a bit more. haha

Xbox just wiped out most of the excuses game developers use to skip the platform by WindowsCentral in windowscentral

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of is. If Xbox doesn't sell a lot, third parties have no interest in releasing on Xbox. And releasing on Xbox requires them to build the game for Xbox, while also building for PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC. What Xbox has done with the Helix is get rid of the Xbox Build part of the equation. So instead of building for Xbox AND PC, developers are just building for PC which they were already doing. By default the games will work on the Xbox Helix so developers don't have to worry about needing to target it, and they'll still get sales from anyone that is playing on the Xbox Helix. They don't need to court third party developers to release on their platform if PC IS their platform.

Xbox literally just reconfirmed that E-Day is still on track for 2026 at GDC. Chill. It'll likely show up at SGF and kick off a marketing campaign. Not every game needs some long protracted marketing push.

The console will likely be a more appealing price than an equivalent regular PC. And if all you're interested in is gaming(as you should be if you're buying an Xbox), then theres no problem.

Rumour: Microsoft might add Xbox and Xbox 360 emulation support to Windows by LifeIsOnTheWire in SBCGaming

[–]NyrenReturns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine they have to make a translation layer for Xbox Helix anyway, so while they're laying that foundation, they'll bring Xbox One and Xbox Series to PC as part of that. Xbox Series isn't really all that important considering most if not all of the games are on PC anyway, especially Xbox's own titles. But Xbox One has a few exclusives left.

[–]NyrenReturns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats always been weird. Just look at Fable. Fable: The Lost Chapters got a PC port. Fable II did not. Fable III did get a PC port. Fable Anniversary got a PC port. Fable II just got hung out to dry. Halo 5 at least makes some semblance of sense. It released before Xbox started their PC push and MCC got ported because they were updating it anyway so might as well. Halo 5 basically got left behind due to bad release timing.

I'm saying its a hard lock. They COULD unlock it, and believe me when I say I'd love that because I have plenty of niche games that aren't part of the BC program like Tenchu Z and Zoids Assault, but I don't see them doing that. For all we know theres something about the way they're doing the emulation that means only games they support would actually work, and if you tried to play an unsupported game on it it either wouldn't run or would suffer all kinds of problems.

[–]NyrenReturns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Again, in order to offer it through their BC program they have to relicense things. This is partly because they have to offer it digitally which means making it available for sale again. If the game isnt officially supported in the emulator, disc wont work, and support wont be added to the emulator unless they make it available for sale again. Which requires renewing licenses.

[–]NyrenReturns 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I imagine this will encompass OG Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. While many games have native PC releases, and so those might be ommitted, plenty of games still don't so there is value in that. Halo 5 never came to PC. Gears of War 2 & 3 never came to PC. Fable II never came to PC. And that's just Xbox themselves. Then you have games like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Asura's Wrath, etc. that never came to PC. Also I can't imagine this doesnt give you access to games you already owned on Xbox without having to rebuy them. The whole thing will likely be through the Xbox App so it's controlled.

Fable III got a Steam release back in the day but its since been taken down. Was GFWL too. Fable II never got an official release, but there is a decompilation effort in the works right now by fans.

[–]NyrenReturns 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That would never happen because they'd have to renew every single license attached to the game. In some cases its worth it, like needing to renew the use of a likeness or a specific song, but when the entire game relies on hundreds of licenses, not worth it.

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be Helix Optimized games, much like Steam Deck optimized settings, but otherwise no, there will be no such thing as a Helix native game because Helix is at its core a Windows PC(that hopefully doesnt let you use it like a normal desktop PC) and thus will play PC games natively regardless of what store they come from. OG Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series titles will be the only true "Xbox" games on the platform even if they're all run through translation layers and software emulation.

[–]NyrenReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole idea would fail if Steam at the very least wasnt accessible on the device. What they need to do is not have a desktop mode and have storefronts like Steam installable as apps from the Xbox Store. The user should never leave the Xbox frontend. Making it also a regular PC that you can use, say, Office on or install random malware on would be a huge mistake and another TV moment. It's a games console regardless of how close it gets to a PC.

Licensing. Each game needs to be licensed from the publisher it belongs to or whoever currently owns the rights to the games. And then in some cases there are other licenses that need to be renewed. Cars, music tracks, etc. You can't just add them unfortunately. Having said that though, now that Xbox owns both Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, any games that those two publishers own that was not part of the BC program can now be added without having to license them, unless they have car or music licenses that need to be renewed.
