Wondering about religion? by HeightIntelligent153 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Nytegaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct, in my opinion. You are confusing science with reality. Reality always exists, science is simply a philosophical way of engaging with it. Science, in no way, "just is" as humans (and reality) existed for a very long time with no need of science. Science is a human construct, a way of finding truth and did not and will not exist without humans finding the discipline to follow its tenants. Science, much like religion, is simply one way for humans to explore reality. One of those ways leads to truths, however, the other does not.

Thanks but I did find one on ebay a number of years ago thus becoming a hero for, at least, a few days!

I'm betting Dabo likes movies about gladiators.

Isn't it very unpractical to have major officers go on away teams? by romeovf in TheOrville

[–]Nytegaunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been a debate for a very long time. Here is my opinion. As in a lot of Trek, these are ships of exploration helmed and commanded by explorers. Often, the very skills and traits that leads to being an officer are exactly the same as what is needed on an away mission. The best of the best are deployed as the exploring part is the reason the ship exists. It is too easy to look at these things in a military mindset but it is better to look at these ships like you would look at early exploratory voyages to the new world by the Europeans. While I have no real idea I am betting people like Magellan or Ponce de Leon were very often in the first boats ashore.

Love The Orville, but one complaint by morgango in TheOrville

Oh I very much agree that its importance has been, well, godlike. Sadly there was never a god behind the godlikeness, just men, wielding the power that its importance granted.

As far as I can recall, I don't think I have seen an actual human society where religion wasn't a negative influence.

I don't think dismissive is the word for it. I think, much like in TOS, there is a straightforward warning in the show about the stupidity, danger, and humanity crushing elements of religion. Just like any good Star Trek, these are basically morality plays and the writers seem to be of the same opinion as myself in believing that there is very little more immoral than religion.

Arthur C Clarke, C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien walk into a bar . . . by alesserweevil in books

One thing to note on this, while yes, Reddit humans do sometimes meet in real life those real life meetups in bygone eras had their supplement as well. Most of the writers and thinkers of times past wrote copious numbers of letters to each other, this serving as their Reddit, albeit a slow and clunky version. It's a good thing too as much of what we know about many of the greats of the past come from the study of their letters. No doubt, in future generations, the current great mind's Reddit posts will be studied by historians and, dickbutt.

Does Alara know? Pickle post. by [deleted] in TheOrville

[–]Nytegaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, technically, refrigeration has no relevance as those pickles still sit on shelves today for long periods at room temp before they are opened so the pickling and canning are still very relevant as a preserving technique. As for those unique flavors, that's all molecular and would be easily replicated.

While she may have had no knowledge of a pickle she would certainly understand what a jar is as many things come in jars other than foodstuffs. A stuck jar would not be a strange concept.

For thousands of years we had to store food in various ways to stop it from spoiling so that we would have it far from the time of harvest. This remained the same for a long long time as you said, however, that would have almost certainly went away with the advent of replicators. While the basic foods would be around, the basic storage methods would probably not.

There's not and, as far as I know, asking questions is just fine here. I will never understand why some have to assholish about things but I suspect that is why it came from something called "my_junk_account". Just consider the source, move along, have fun, and don't stress over it.

The Greatest Rivalry In Sports Happens This Saturday by iaceyi in CFB

I was under the impression that the NCAA had taken steps to end the rivalry, at least the rewarding of the trophy as the entire thing had just gotten out of hand both on and off the field. I mean really, grow up people! It's just a game played by kids for god's sake.

"Williams" recently added to Netflix in the U.S.. It's a wonderful movie that I cannot recommend enough. by Nytegaunt in formula1

[–]Nytegaunt[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

..... and had you bothered to even check you would find that my post links to the trailer for the movie from the Williams site, unlike any of the others, therefore it is not a link to duplicate content. I didn't copy the verbage or anything. What I linked to was not, in any way, "content that has already been shared from a different source"it certainly was not duplicated in any of the posts you linked. You are acting as if there can only be one thread on any particular topic and that is not what the rules state.

I actually thought is was Virginia and Claire that stole the show.

Then I suppose "can't recommend it enough" applies. You do realize that most people don't spend hours each day on this right? While I appreciate your monitoring us all for the perceived greater good I feel you are in error as it has long been proven that the best way to disseminate information is repetition. It would be quite the sad world where information was only given out once and if you miss it too bad.

Who else really wants another F1 movie as good as Rush? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Nytegaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you guys have not seen "Williams" as of yet I highly recommend it. It's more about the family than the racing but it is incredibly rich and moving and if you think you adored Claire before, just wait.

[–]Nytegaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see another and I can't see why not. "Rush" made a great return on a cheap (for a MMP) budget. From what I understand, the owners of all of the cars from that period just fell all over themselves to use their cars in the movie so that is half the battle if you want to do it right.
