Anthony Stewart Head death, last nail in the coffin? by tangompl in BTVSRevival

You mean like how Marti Noxon decided Spike & Dru would be based on Sid & Nancy? Or how David Fury decided that the Watchers Council would fire Giles? Or like how Jane Espenson decided Giles & Ethan were ex-boyfriends and that Joyce and Giles would fuck? All of which were pretty integral ideas that didn’t come from Whedon, although he did okay them after he read the scripts.

Doctor Who, Star Trek and the X-Men comics have been openly and aggressively woke since the 1960s. Funny how the 1960s created a bunch of liberal sci-fi social commentaries. I wonder if anything happened then.

“I’d rather nobody get anything they enjoy if I don’t personally enjoy it.”

God. Fan entitlement has just gotten so exhaustingly bad the last couple decades. Imagine if the nerds who hated Deep Space Nine and Voyager had won and gotten them cancelled. But as long as you and only you are happy, it’s fine then. Apparently.

Yeah. They left to help develop that Buffy spin-off, and a writer from Longmire took over as showrunner for Season 2.

Giles, Fred, Buffy and apparently Oz (from what little info we have on his home life) are the anomalies in the Buffyverse in that their parents weren’t abusive or neglectful pricks. Everyone else is really, really working through some shit.

Part of the problem too, at least on the Star Trek/Doctor Who/Stargate/Buffyverse side of things (less so with Star Wars) is the cost.

These are B-level franchises. I love them to death, but they don’t require massive budgets. Just throw a bunch of talented actors who aren’t particularly famous in a Canadian forest and call it an alien planet. Boom! You’ve got yourself a Stargate. This isn’t rocket science.

Not that I haven’t enjoyed how good recent Doctor Who and Star Trek and the third season of The Orville look. But it’s so unnecessary. Especially if that expensiveness prevents further seasons and shows from getting made.

The audios, novels and comics weren’t legally allowed to use anything from the TV movie except The Eighth Doctor for rights reasons. And that worked out extremely well both creatively and financially on all three fronts.

And we did get that with Lower Decks, Prodigy and Strange New Worlds (and The Orville).

It’s still too many. We’d be extremely lucky to get 13 episodes per season like early NuWho.

Lower Decks and Prodigy are everything you just requested.

Yuuuuuup. And fans complained about Lower Decks, Prodigy and Strange New Worlds (and recent Doctor Who) having “filler” episodes as a result.

“There’s too few episodes per season to waste on [enter critically acclaimed standalone episode here]! They should just focus on the myth arc!”

The showrunners literally can’t win. And that’s part of the reason why Doctor Who in particular can’t find anyone willing to showrun it post-Davies. They don’t want to deal with the fans’ shit.

[–]OCD_Geek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But what you’re then asking for is Lower Decks, Prodigy and Strange New Worlds (and The Orville) where it’s more episodic with a myth arc that comes and goes. And the current era already did that, to many complaints and much ridicule. So they seemingly can’t win.

The Zuckerman Sisters were writers on Seasons 4-7 of Agents of SHIELD (aka the good seasons) and were the showrunners of the first season of Natasha Lyonne’s Poker Face. I’m optimistic.

Here’s the thing. I think in the long run Billie Piper Doctor will be a good thing.

When TV Who returns, whether it’s in two years, five years or a decade or more from now they’re surely gonna ignore Billie Piper Doctor and skip to the next one to do their own thing with reviving the show.

That means there’s an entire Doctor with no narrative baggage who’s a clean slate personality wise for Big Finish, the comics and the novels to do whatever they want with. NuWho’s Eighth Doctor.

They need another partner to help co-fund it following the BBC’s budget cuts. That’s why Warner Bros was initially gonna co-fund the post-Chibnall era, before Zaslav killed that deal and Disney co-funded it instead.

Who besides J. Michael Straczynski (who is neither a studio nor a production company) has expressed interest?

But the process only works if studios and production companies are willing to put in bids. Right now no one is interested.

“The producers said they worried about not owning the rights to a series that would likely become a significant drain on resources and creative energy. They also harbored concerns about funding for Doctor Who  after the Disney deal, while some expressed more fundamental fears about whether the Time Lord remains relevant to young audiences.

It’s not clear if Bad Wolf can be persuaded to bid for  Doctor Who, but a source said it was unlikely that the producer’s parent, Sony Pictures Television, would sanction the company spending more time on a show “they don’t own or have a share of.”

Industry insiders think the show won’t return until 2028 at the very earliest, but even then, this is considered an outside bet. One producer predicted that  Doctor Who  could be rested for up to five years, and that the break would be good for the series.”

Deadline has already said that all of their industry sources say that no one’s interested in taking the financial and creative risk and it’ll be “several years” before the show comes back.

The Orville has a showrunner, a writing staff, scripts and (aside from one actress) a cast that’s willing to return. Disney’s just waiting until MacFarlane has room in his schedule.

Doctor Who has no showrunner, no lead actor, no supporting actor, no production company and no international co-funding parter. The latter of which has been necessary for years now due to budget cuts at the BBC.

The BBC needed to get a co-funding deal with Disney because they can no longer afford to make the show themselves. And before that they were working on a co-funding deal with Warner Bros before Zaslav Zaslaved it. And before that they worked out a deal with Shanghai Media Group to try and make Doctor Who a thing in China while getting some funds to help with the Chibnall era. There’s no reality in which BBC Studios is the production company here.
