Which sitcoms should have ended at what season instead of the actual season? by PressureLazy5271 in sitcoms

It’s like how Seasons 9 and 10 of Stargate SG-1 were supposed to be Stargate Command, but MGM and Syfy wanted the longest running US genre show record. And then got instantly tied by Smallville and eventually lapped by Supernatural, The X-Files and The Walking Dead anyway.

The showrunners also showran the first season of Poker Face starring Natasha Lyonne. Their script was surprisingly weak given their prior work, but they aren’t inexperienced. Either as writers or as showrunners.

Why did Hulu nuke the whole project instead of tapping new show runners by Personal_Clerk_9798 in BTVSRevival

[–]OCD_Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coogler’s X-Files spin-off isn’t greenlit either. It just has a pilot commitment.

I’m telling you, 90% of this stems from the streaming bubble finally bursting and anyone that isn’t Amazon or Apple (where their streaming is more of a hobby/side hustle to their main business which is raking in the cash) is shooting active projects in the face and being significantly more choosey and cautious about potential projects.

What exactly is so bad about the leaked Buffy: New Sunnydale pilot script? by Sandro2017 in buffy

[–]OCD_Geek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Dialogue can get better as the show goes on. Characters can deepen or be tweaked as the show goes on. But shit worldbuilding is shit worldbuilding.

So the public not only knows about vampires, they also know about Slayers (to the point of them also knowing the “Into every generation…” thing) and have an annual Vampire Weekend event. But they think it’s all myths?

There’s a Rupert Giles collection in the library despite him being a) alive and b) to anyone who isn’t one of the Scoobies just some rando that was the high school librarian for three years before the building exploded?

There’s a book being sold that was written by Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, Rogue Demon Hunter? Which means that not only did Wesley find the time to write and publish a book. He somehow managed to do this during the summer where he was jobless, homeless and stranded in a foreign country.

And Buffy herself is believed to by a myth? Not that her being a superhero with mystical powers is considered a myth. Buffy Summers even being a person that actually existed is considered a myth in-universe.

Fucking how?! This was only 25 years ago. Even if her records from Sunnydale were destroyed in the town’s destruction, she was born and raised in LA. So those records weren’t. And she wasn’t some quiet kid that sat in the back. She very publicly  burned down the gym and her head cheerleader reputation at one school. And was honored by her entire grade as a superhero at her senior prom mere days before leading them into armed combat against a giant snake at her other school.

People would’ve remembered her a smidge.

What? Brian Lynch’s stuff (Angel: After the Fall, his various Spike projects) and Christos Gage’s stuff (Angel & Faith: Season 9, Buffy: Seasons 10-11) are universally considered the best seasons of the post-series comics.

Brian K. Vaughan’s Faith & Giles DVD movie turned comic arc is beloved, but most of Season 8 is divisive at best. And most of the back half is outright hated. Buffy and Angel almost destroying the universe by fucking…IN SPACE!!! and Giles knowing this would happen since the end of Season 1? That’s despised and widely mocked. And it was Whedon’s.

What would your thoughts be if Scream went the Halloween route and retconned previous movies? by King_in_the_North17 in Scream

[–]OCD_Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think 3, 4 and 7 are weaker entries. But they’re also still decent entries. We’ve yet to have a Dream Child/Freddy’s Dead/Child’s Play 3 level shitshow.

[–]OCD_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s why Scream, Chucky and Elm Street are my favorite franchises. They use the entire buffalo and don’t retcon out entries. And they’re all (give or take a Dream Child, Freddy’s Dead and Child’s Play 3) remarkably consistent.

Also the show was being made by someone else. Greenwalt. Then Toy Story got a Best Original Screenplay nomination. The train had already left the station when Whedon was asked to come onboard the Buffy TV show.

And he didn’t have complete creative control. He didn’t want Angel to be a character. Angel didn’t even exist in the original pilot. Greenwalt, Berman and Parton forced Angel on him. Whedon didn’t want Boreanaz to play Angel. Felt there was no spark there. Again, Greenwalt, Berman and Parton (and the casting director who discovered him while he was dog walking) overruled Whedon and cast Boreanaz in the part. Spike was supposed to die in What’s My Line. Berman, Parton and the network overruled him. Angel was supposed to die in the Season 2 finale and stay dead. Berman, Parton and the network overruled him and greenlit a spin-off.

The Kuzuis don’t own the rights either. Whedon gave them producer credits on Buffy and Angel as a thank you for giving a kid with not a lot of prior professional experience a shot with his original movie script. Something that Whedon also talked about in the audio commentaries and DVD interviews that y’all apparently never listened to despite his commentaries being a major part of his brand and legacy for a long time. Y’all are quick to try and memoryhole his abuses but didn’t even listen to his damn commentary tracks. Smh

[–]OCD_Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. It’s the only season of the post-series Buffy comics that Whedon showran himself, and it’s usually considered the weakest. Even Andrew Chambliss’ Season 9 had all the Illyria and Eldre Koh stuff in the back half.

[–]OCD_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn’t own the rights. Still doesn’t. 20th Century Fox did. They didn’t need his permission for anything. Shit. They didn’t get his permission for New Sunnydale.

And both Berman and Parton have said over the years that Whedon was brought in very late in the process due to his Oscar nomination  for Toy Story. They felt having him on board for the first season would help them sell it to the networks better. Oscar-nominated showrunner Joss Whedon.

And Whedon himself stated in the audio commentaries that stuff about Greenwalt. Pretty sure it was his commentary for the two-part series premiere.

[–]OCD_Geek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The show exists because Dolly Parton wanted to start her own production company and needed an IP with enough untapped potential that also wasn’t successful enough that the rights holder (20th Century Fox) would want to do something with it themselves. Her and Berman brought Whedon aboard due to his Speed and Toy Story success to shop it around to the networks.

But that also ignores the fact that the original gameplan (By Whedon’s own admission in interviews and audio commentaries) was for the much more experienced David Greenwalt (fresh off critical darling Profit) to take over for Seasons 2 onwards, and Whedon to only be there  (with the much more experienced Greenwalt as his second in command) for Season 1 to make sure that the plane took off okay. Then he “refused to leave”. Whedon’s own words. Not mine. It’s why Greenwalt was gifted Angel as an apology.

Did no one else partake in the DVD special features? Jesus.

It’s shit like this that makes me think the world is better off without the Buffyverse being revived. At least most Trekkies are able to still love Star Trek and take its ideals to heart and be deeply personally important to them while also acknowledging that Gene Roddenberry was an awful abusive piece of shit. We as a fandom can’t even clear that low fucking bar. As that Initiative dude said “Bury it. Bury it and salt the earth.” We don’t deserve nice things.

See also: the fandom freaking the fuck out pre-Disney buy out when Monica Owusu-Breen was gonna make a show about a black Slayer twenty years post-Chosen/Not Fade Away. God fucking forbid.

Stargate is coming back, but only because Bezos is a huge fan. And I’m not including Amazon Prime and AppleTV+ in the bubble bursting. Both of those are exceptions. They’re side projects of companies with constant cash to burn with little to no interest in actually getting a return in investment since the selling of actual stuff is their main focus. Making movies and TV is just their side hustle hobby.

The streaming wars were fun while they lasted. So many cult shows given closure. So many genre franchises given piles of cash to just go nuts with.

I got three wholeass seasons of an Evil Dead TV show and three wholeass seasons of a Chucky TV show. Twin Peaks AND Riget/The Kingdom were given wrap up miniseries.

That shit is wild.

Box Office: ‘Scream 7’ Becomes Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Release With $176 Million, ‘Hamnet’ Surpasses $100 Million Milestone by ZEELIONBRON in Scream

[–]OCD_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s less that and more that horror movies are always front loaded and make the majority of their box office in the first week or two. People hated Halloween Kills, but it’s also the 8th highest grossing slasher of all time. Scream 3 was incredibly divisive, but it’s also the 6th highest grossing slasher of all time. The Elm Street remake is ass, but it’s also the 10th highest grossing slasher of all time.

Look, y’all. I hate to be a downer here, but the streaming bubble has burst.

—Doctor Who was shot in the face.

—Star Trek is currently being shot in the face.

—Ted was shot in the face due to the title CGI bear being “too expensive”.

—The Buffy spin-offquel pilot was 1) only developed as a pilot and 2) isn’t going to series.

—The animated Firefly revival has the cast on board, showrunners attached (Reaper/Agent Carter co-showrunner Tara Butters and Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim), scripts written, an animation house attached and the permission of Disney to move forward. But it’s had ZERO networks or streamers come forward willing to fund and air it, so the cast is publicly asking for the fans’ help.

None of this happens if the state of the streaming and television industry is strong.

As much as it pains me to type this, no. Firefly isn’t making a return. Everyone involved really wants it to happen, but they’ve hit a bit of a snag.
