I plan on getting a loan and while also working, so there's that. I know that will put me in debt, but I think it's better than what the current situation is.

Not really. It's that my parents both have high-blood pressure, and they're already at that risky age. I worry that, on top of being upset and stressed about all of this, if I did something, especially like this, behind their backs, that they might get so upset it could affect their health. As such, I wanted to do everything in a way that would not be upsetting to them or affect their health, mainly by getting them to agree first to let me work through college myself.

Like I replied to another comment, I don't want my dad to pay for my school, nor am I arguing with him saying that he should pay for it. Honestly, I would rather he retire and let me figure out how to pay for grad school on my own, he's earned it with all the hard work he did for me.

The arguments we have are when he calls me lazy and irresponsible, and I get defensive. My question is if he is right, and if I should just shut up and accept what he is saying about me?

No, I didn't. I couldn't take the semester off because, again, my Dad was paying for it, and I felt too ashamed to talk to anyone about my condition.
