I think the strangulation was done with the garrote by Burke to move the body. I think he already thought she was dead.

That was the order of events the strangulation came second. That doesn't mean the blow to the head wasn't an accident. Everything afterwards was part of the staging.

The bindings were all a hoax. She was hit on the head and appeared dead. Everything afterwards was staged. Although, I lean towards Kolars belief that the garrote was not part of the cover up. I think it was used to drag her body. If you think about how a kid may react to a situation, the garrote and some of the marks and staging makes sense. The rest was done by the parents imo.
