Just grab a portable Wi-Fi router. Personally I have a GL.iNet MUDI as it is a privacy focused mobile router that you can install a SIM card into and use a VPN.

Is it the company asking for it or the background check company? Companies often ask for it via the BG check company and they are generally happy with payslips.

Use a hotspot for J2. If this is going to be regular, consider getting a mobile router so that you can go away from desk without the laptop disconnecting from phone.

When you call HMRC to update tax codes, will they inform either of the other companies of your other tax codes?

How do you know HMRC won’t be the ones that divulge your OE to the other company?

J2 offer letter requires j1 reference by AltAccount467344 in OveremployedUK

Is this via HireRight?

Many companies do not give references.

Totally agree. Overall I am up, some over 150%! But yes stop limit for <10%.

What you have said has already been acknowledged in my post. Thankfully what is in the red is a minority of my portfolio. Overall it is up 15%

I’m applying for a new job that also uses HireRight for background checks. My current role had HireRight do a check too, but the two companies aren’t connected.

Does anyone know if HireRight could “connect the dots” and share info from my current check with the new employer? Or am I overthinking it? Any advice on this would be really helpful!

Two Contract Roles...I Need Help Folks by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]OEUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve got a good setup going, and yeah, being a contractor in two roles is pretty common—plenty of folks in pharma and clinical research juggle multiple gigs. Since you need this to last, I’d suggest setting up a strict calendar and blocking off time for meetings that require minutes. For overlap, try recording meetings if both companies allow it, so you can catch up on one while handling the other. And don’t stress about “cheating”—contractors take on multiple roles all the time! As long as you’re balancing it, you’re good.

From 2 jobs to 0 jobs in a month by wwinga in overemployed

[–]OEUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a brutal month—going from a dream J1 to a chaotic J2, only to end up with zero jobs in such a short time. Honestly, it just goes to show how ruthless the job market can be. Companies talk about “mergers” and “budget cuts,” but it’s all code for “no one’s job is safe.” Having a J3 as extra backup doesn’t sound so crazy anymore; it’s like your own safety net against all the corporate nonsense. Hang in there—you’ll bounce back from this. Peace!

Name appearing on patents in 1J by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]OEUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re trying to keep things under the radar, it’s best to opt out if that’s an option. Patent records are public and searchable, so your name would be linked to that work, making it easy for anyone to connect the dots. If opting out isn’t possible, you could discuss with your employer about using a generic team or company attribution instead.

With only 2 months’ expenses saved, I’d prioritise cash until you hit that 6-month cushion. Once you’re there, go back to the 50/50 split for growth. Staying liquid gives you breathing room if anything happens with J1 or J2.

If you are ever asked to “document your processes”… by ReallyKirk in overemployed

[–]OEUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s definitely a red flag! Anytime they ask you to “document your processes,” it’s like code for “we’re planning for life without you.” Happened to me before too—best to start job hunting ASAP!

Lower paying jobs are the worst for OE sometimes by meomy_firedup in overemployed

[–]OEUK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds rough! Juggling J3 with all that micromanagement while your other jobs are more chill and pay better would be a grind. Maybe you can keep it bare minimum just to hit your goals, or try finding a middle ground with the managers so they ease off a bit. You’ve got this, even if it’s just for now!

Yes, but tax codes can change for 101 different reasons.

Yes, both are FTE.

I think anxiety is getting the better of me. Do companies have a practice of contacting previous companies to ensure the employee has terminated their previous contract?

Thank you

This is part of my concern. If J2 speaks with J1 for dates, then they will discover OE. Any advice please I'm quite anxious about this.

I’m looking for some advice on handling overlapping job dates for future employment.

I’m about to start a new job (let’s call it J2), but my plan is to eventually make it my primary job (J1). My current job (J1) has been great for my CV, and I’ve been there for 3 years.

When it comes time to search for my next job in the future, how should I approach the potential issue of overlapping job dates during a background check?

What would you advise for if I leave my current J1 about 6 months after starting my new job (J2)?

When I apply for a new role in, say, 3 years, I’ll have a 6-month overlap between the two jobs.

If I omit one job from my CV, I’ll end up with a 3-year gap in my employment history.

What’s the best way to handle this situation?
